How Chinese Feng Shui Culture Shape Consumer and Business Decisions: A Conceptual Framework

Society for Marketing Advances Conference, 2013

Feng Shui (pronounced ‘fung shway’) is a philosophy of Chinese origin in which the central belief is that the conditions of the physical environment shape people’s affairs. Feng Shui practices are deeply embedded in Chinese culture and are perceived to enhance safety and protection, good health, and financial success. However, no attempt has been made thus far to conceptualize these practices as cultural phenomena or to examine their impact on the behavior of Chinese consumers and business people. A comprehensive framework of Feng Shui pratices is proposed to understand how they influence Chinese people’s private and business decisions. The proposed framework provides a practical road map that can enhance the interaction of Western companies with Chinese consumers and businesses.

MODERN FENG SHUI INTERPRETATION WITHIN CONTEMPORARY RESIDENTIAL DESIGN IN MALAYSIA: A CONVERSATION WITH FENG SHUI MASTERS

Feng Shui is an ancient Chinese geomancy practice that seeks harmony and balance within living environment and natural settlements, commonly associated with positive benefits for space occupants. People in general look to improve the quality of their living spaces, as part and parcel of enhancing their overall happiness and wellbeing. Apparently nowadays, the adoption of Feng Shui principles in residential design is not merely limited to Chinese people yet to other ethnicities too. This scenario has call upon further exploration on how Feng Shui can best suit contemporary interior design and cater the needs of modern lifestyle. Three local Feng Shui masters with past involvements in residential projects were interviewed to further understand so, apart for gauging the significance of Feng Shui for the current and future interior design industry. It is found that several aspects are essential such as air ventilation, water element, layout, light, colour, and sound are key aspects in the discourse of Feng Shui for residential interior design. This study would help in raising awareness on the significance of adapting Feng Shui in the current interior design industry in Malaysia.

Feng Shui: New Dimensions in Design

2003

Is the increasingly popular decorating philosophy called feng shui just another way to bring beauty to your home or office? Behind the seemingly harmless facade of intricate and detailed decorating advice is a spiritual belief system based on the concepts of a universal force called chi, the opposing but complementary yin and yang, and the interaction of the five elements-earth, water, fire, metal, and wood. Feng shui is a system in which one uses tools of divination and complex formulas and calculations to determine how to control the flow of chi outside or inside a home or office. Harmony, balance, and peace are achieved mainly through the proper placement of objects in one's physical environment. Feng shui uses occult practices to identify lucky and unlucky areas of a home and to determine how to keep bad chi at bay while attracting good chi. Adherents of feng shui believe invisible, magical forces are tamed through occult forms of divination. Its worldview is antithetical to the biblical worldview of a supernatural, sovereign, personal God. IS FENG SHUI JUST A NEW WAY TO DECORATE? Feng shui (pronounced "fung shway") has come to the United States and other Western countries riding on the wave of interest, since the 1960s, in all things Eastern. Donald Trump uses feng shui, as does Merrill Lynch. 1 At the Whitney Museum of American Art's biennial exhibit, an artist selling two stone lions chose the buyer based on applications that explained potential buyers' feng shui problems. 2 Feng shui is used on a regular basis in China,

Feng Shui: A Comprehensive Review of its Effectiveness Based on Evaluation Studies

International Journal of Advances in Scientific Research and Engineering (ijasre), 2021

After five decades of its presence in the Western European space, the architectural profession, regardless of the popularity of feng shui, has never systematically declared itself about this phenomenon. This is a professional problem. It is equally absurd to dismiss feng shui as a bunch of superstitious nonsense without properly scientifically researching it, as well as its detailed study following all Western science standards, without asking, at least once, whether the fengshui recommendations have the effect they promise, and if so, which and why. To answer this question an in-depth analyses of scientific articles on feng shui was performed. Evaluation studies found were divided into three groups: comparative studies where the effectiveness of fengshui's recommendations is not directly verified by field research, but compared with findings in other areas of science; field experimental studies that examine the actual effectiveness of selected feng shui recommendations, through a real or virtual environment, engaging participants and sometimes a control protocol and studies of living quality evaluation systems with feng shui recommendations. Based on the results of the studies analysed it can be concluded, that between the feng shui school of form, environmental psychology and sustainable design principles there are certain similarities, which some researchers confirm with a higher or a lower degree of correlation and statistical significance. On the other side, one of the fundamental concepts of feng shui, namely the concept of life energy qi, remains poorly researched. The conclusion is, that the greatest potential of feng shui for contemporary architecture is not so much in the practical application of its techniques and recommendations, as much of this is already included in everyday design practise, but in its philosophical and conceptual foundations. They can encourage architects to rethink spatial concepts and, if necessary, to change established spatial paradigms.

Priming Attitudes toward Feng Shui

Asian Journal of Business Research, 2012

Previous research has identified three fundamentally different attitudes toward Feng Shui: the instrumental view, the spiritual view, and the minimalist view. An experiment was conducted to test the prediction that each of these three attitudes can be activated in people by "priming" them with related concepts. As predicted, priming people with concepts to do with uncertainties and ups and downs in life led them to a higher level of agreement with the instrumental view of Feng Shui. Priming people with concepts of nature and cultural identity led to a higher level of agreement with the spiritual view of Feng Shui. Finally, priming people with concepts to do with school life led to a higher level of agreement with the minimalist view of Feng Shui. We discuss the implications of these findings for business practitioners.

From Rituals to Contemporary Design Solutions: Examples of Feng Shui Applied Contemporary Buildings

Humanities and Social Sciences Review ISSN: 2165-6258 :: Volume 01 :: Number 03 (2012), 2012

This paper explains the influence of Feng Shui models on the design of contemporary buildings from an architectural perspective. Feng Shui principles are strictly set principles to allow the flow of chi in the buildings and are used to harmonize people with their environment. These principles are as guidelines and expressed as external and internal principles. Emphasizing the external principles manifested the ideal Feng Shui model of receiving chi. Through natural formation of land and the influence of surrounding environment, these Feng Shui principles were applied in a manner that raised a question if they influence the architectural design of the buildings or not. Three buildings designed by different architects in different styles have been selected for this study to assess in the perspective of architectural design and Feng Shui. These are Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank Headquarters in Hong Kong designed by Lord Norman Foster, Getty Center in Los Angeles, USA designed by Richard Meier and Sydney Opera House in Australia designed by Jorn Utzon. Manifestation of Feng Shui principles in the design of the selected famous buildings designed by the pioneers of architecture, this study shows that the strictly set Feng Shui principles do not put boundaries on the architectural design. This study differs from the others in a manner that pulls attention not only to the influence of Feng Shui on the design in terms of human well being, but also on the architectural style of the building. Keywords: Contemporary architecture, Architectural design, Feng shui.

DEFUSING THE NORTH-SOUTH ISSUE (FENG SHUI)

This article examines the arguments for and against those who would enter into the debate for the changing of Feng Shui for the Southern Hemisphere. It examines how the proponents in favour of changing Feng Shui for the Southern Hemisphere present their arguments. Then, referencing again the Form School and the Compass School, this article refers back to those arguments to demonstrate that, there is in fact no need to change Feng Shui for the Southern Hemisphere. In addition, this article examines a chart based on the Fei Xing (Flying Stars) School of Feng Shui and how changing Feng Shui for the Southern Hemisphere would affect the chart. Then, using both the amended and the original charts, the article will draw a comparison and discuss the resulting implications of the changes, using actual case studies to discuss the two variants. In conclusion, the main tool used in Feng Shui is the compass, and it can be shown that the use of the compass does not change between the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. Therefore the reader will be left with no doubt that Feng Shui is indeed to be used the same way in the Southern Hemisphere as it is in the Northern Hemisphere.

2020

Feng shui, an element that has been associated with success, wealth, and harmony, is often considered the key factor for the decision-making of housing purchase among the Chinese in Malaysia. Nevertheless, property developers often overlooked this factor, resulting in a gap between consumers’ expectations and developers’ perceptions, which could lead to customers’ dissatisfaction. This study was carried out to identify the importance of feng shui theory towards housing development, determine the influence of feng shui factors in housing selection, and examine the perceptions of developers towards feng Shui factors in residential property. This paper adopted a qualitative approach by employing the interviewing technique. This study was conducted within a selected residential area in Sungai Petani, Kedah and the respondents were the Generation Y within the Chinese group.
