The paper aims to map the homicides that victimize individuals residing in Porto Alegre between the years 2015 and 2018, identifying their main characteristics, as well as the neighborhoods where they lived and died. Based on data from the Mortality Information System (SIM) provided by the Municipal Health Department, the paper analyzes the profile of the victims in relation to age, gender and race. The QGis software was used to map the life and death sites of the murdered youth, aged between 15 and 29 years. Thus, it was possible to reaffirm the idea that homicides mainly victimize young black males. However, the age curve showed a peak of victims between 15 and 19 years old, which was not a reality a decade ago. In addition, it was noted the proportional decrease of white victims, as well as a greater women representation. Finally, in relation to life and death places, while there is a strong concentration in the neighborhoods Rubem Berta, Restinga, Santa Tereza, Sarandi and Lomba...

The authors present a quantitative and qualitative study on homicides among teenagers in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil, based on a historical series during the 1990s and the life and death histories in this group, with a special focus on 1997. In that year there were 68 homicides in which the victims were from 10 to 19 years old. Of the 68, 62 were males and only 6 females, or a ratio of 10:1, showing that young males are more vulnerable and susceptible to being murdered. The data indicate that cause of death is influenced by gender culture and that homicides are based on power and status symbols characterizing a kind of virility. This expression of virility in the shaping of violence also appears in the domination of the female body observed in homicides with young women as the victims. The life and death histories of these teenagers highlight the pertinence of the gender-based analysis as a theoretical-analytical category, in addition to analyses considering socioeconomic aspects and social inequity.

Background Deaths due to homicides and traffic accidents among youth are a public health issue worldwide. Studies of the complex network of cause and effect on this topic point to both poverty and health inequalities. Different investigational approaches to intentional and unintentional deaths combined with socioeconomic variables can help create a better understanding of the association between violence and socioeconomic conditions. This study analyzed the spatial distribution and potential clusters of risk for intentional and unintentional deaths among youths aged 15-24 years in Goiânia, a newly urbanized city in central Brazil. Methods Death data and residential addresses were extracted from the national Mortality Information System and validated by household visits. To detect all potential cases, we prospectively investigated every death classified as a transport accident, assault, legal intervention, intentional self-harm, unknown underlying cause, and undetermined intent accor...
