Neuroendocrine carcinoma of the head and neck: a 20-year case series

Neuroendocrine carcinoma (NEC) can be an aggressive disease with locoregional and distant metastasis. We present this article (1) to highlight the typical presentation of NEC in head and neck primary sites such as the parotid gland, paranasal sinuses, and supraglottis and (2) to discuss the prognosis of these tumors based on their histologic subtype and stage. We base our comments on the findings of our retrospective review of the cases of 16 adults-10 men and 6 women, aged 43 to 88 years (mean: 65.8)-who had been diagnosed with pathologically confirmed NEC of the head and neck. Analysis of subtypes revealed that 11 of these patients (68.8%) had presented with poorly differentiated NEC, 4 (25.0%) with moderately differentiated NEC, and 1 (6.3%) with well-differentiated NEC. Neuroendocrine carcinomas (NECs) of the head and neck (HN) account for <1% of HN cancers (HNCs), with a 5-year overall survival (OS) <20%. This is a retrospective study of HN NECs diagnosed at our institution between 2005 and 2022. Immunohistochemistry and next-generation sequencing (NGS) were used to evaluate neuroendocrine markers, tumor mutational burden (TMB), mutational profiles and T-cell receptor repertoires. Eleven patients with high-grade HN NECs were identified (male:female ratio 6:5; median age 61 (Min–Max: 31–86)): nasoethmoidal (3), parotid gland (3), submaxillary gland (1), larynx (3) and base of tongue (1). Among n = 8 stage II/IVA/B, all received (chemo)radiotherapy with/without prior surgery or induction chemotherapy, with complete response in 7/8 (87.5%). Global burden of neuroendocrine tumors and changing incidence in Kentucky

Neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) have a low incidence but relatively high prevalence. Over the last three decades, the incidence of NETs has risen 6-fold in the United States. We conducted an observational study to compare the incidence of NETs reported to the Kentucky Cancer Registry (KCR) versus that reported to Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program (SEER). We also provide a systematic review of the state of neuroendocrine tumors worldwide, and compare the available global and local published data. KCR and SEER databases were queried for NET cases between 1995 and 2015. A detailed literature review of epidemiological data for various nations worldwide summarize epidemiological data from various countries. KCR recorded 6179 individuals with newly diagnosed NETs between 1995 and 2015. Primary skull base neuroendocrine carcinoma—a case report and review of literature

Skull-based neuroendocrine carcinomas are rare tumors with only a few case reports in literature. Here we present an unusual case of primary neuroendocrine carcinoma of the skull in 60-year-old male which was proven on surgical biopsy. The imaging features of this rare tumor along with differential diagnosis are discussed with brief review of the literature.
Neuroendocrine tumors: An epidemiological study of 250 cases at a tertiary hospital

To compare the frequency of neuroendocrine tumors in our service with that reported in the literature considering age, gender, location, degree of differentiation and increase in incidence by means of a retrospective study. Search of variables from a database of neuroendocrine tumor cases diagnosed at the Department of Pathological Sciences, Hospital da Santa Casa de São Paulo over the past 10 years, relating them to epidemiological data such as gender, age, distribution across organs, most-used immunohistochemical markers and presence or absence of either lymph node or distant metastases. In all, 250 cases were reviewed, 133 involving females, predominantly in the 61-70 age range. The lung was the most frequent site, followed by the stomach.
