An Analysis of Translation Shift in English-Indonesian Translation of Eragon Movie

The objectives of this research are to identify the types of translation shifts present in the Eragon movie and to determine their frequency. The data will be collected from the dialogues in the movie. As a basis for this research, there is translation shift theory used, namely the translation shift theory of Catford (1965. In analyzing the data, the author uses a qualitative research methodology with a case study research design. This research identified translation shift occurrence in 599 dialogues and selected 12 samples for detailed analysis and discussion. The findings of the analysis indicated the presence of both Level Shift and Category Shift in the dialogues. The Level Shift is based on grammatical structure, they are Present Perfect Tense, Past Perfect Tense, Past Continuous Tense and Future Tense. This study is concerned with the analysis of Catford’s formal shifts use in speech act translation from English into Bahasa Indonesia in Kung Fu Panda movie. The analysis covers the use of level shift and category shift on achieving pragmatic equivalence and how the visual-verbal relation happened along with the pragmatic achievement process. This study took documentation and a questionnaire on collecting the data. In this study, a theory from Baker (1992) was applied to analyze pragmatic equivalence achievement. Moreover, the theory from Halliday (1994) in Martinec and Salway (2005) was used to identify visual-verbal relations. The results of the study depicted (1) the use of level shift and category shift were very needed which led to pragmatic equivalence achievement (95,3%). Translation quality assessment is not an undisputed issue in translation studies. The main problem seems to reside in how to assess the quality or what measures should be used to evaluate the translation. The measures used will be different, depending on the purpose of the assessment and on the theoretical framework applied to assessing the translation quality. This paper first discusses different models of translation quality assessment (TQA). Secondly, it describes House's functional-pragmatic TQA model in details and applications of House's model combined with quantitative methods in evaluating English- German translations. Thirdly, it draws out some implications for research into assessing English-Vietnamese translations.
Translation Evaluation: A Comparative Study of an Oblique Translation
Translation is of an absolute necessity in today's world. Robinson (1997) states that the study of translation is an integral part of intercultural relations and of conveying scientific and technological knowledge. He further mentions that " translators need to be able to process linguistic materials quickly and efficiently; but they also need to be able to recognize problem areas and to slow down to solve them in complex analytical ways " (p. 2). This study is an attempt to explore and evaluate an oblique translation of a text from English into Persian to find the most frequent translation strategy. To reach the goal of the study, the researchers selected one hundred and ten sentences of an original English text which had been translated freely at random and compared them with their Persian counterparts. The findings of the study indicated that Persian translator used equivalent strategy with the highest percentage (45%) in the translated corpus. After that, modulation, and transposition had the highest percentages respectively.
Some applications of translation to psycholinguistic research

The purpose of the present article is an analysis of the possible applications of translation to psycholinguistic research. It is argued that it offers valuable insights into foreign language processing, especially comprehension, the mental representation of words, the interaction of different kinds of information and, last but not least, affective states. However, the use of translation also has some limitations which should be taken into account and, if necessary, it should be combined with other research tools.
