Paper deals with the distribution of medicinal plants in Balrampur, Gonda and Shravasti districts of Uttar Pradesh. The study areas are falling under Upper Gangetic plains bordering with Nepal in Himalayas, Shiddharthnagar and Basti districts in the east, Baharaich in the west and Barabanki and Faizabad districts in south separated by the river Ghaghra. Methods of conservation and cultivation aspects in the areas have also been emphasized in the present communication. A high grade commercial medicinal plant in the area is Helminthostachys zeylanica being traded in the name of Kamraj. However, plants of Aegle marmelos (Bilva) Mallotus phillippinensis (Kampillak) and Vetiveria zizanioides (Ushir) are available in plenty in different forest areas of Shravasti district and needs to be commercialized through Forest Department. Plants of Bacopa monnieri (Brahmi) and Desmodium gangeticum (Shalparni) etc. needs to be cultivated. Paper is supported by use of available medicinal plants and Global Positioning locations also.
Conservation and cultivation of threatened and high valued medicinal plants in North East India
Medicinal plants exploration in North Eastern India has been carried out in the various forests including Crude drugs markets up to the range wherever medicinal plants produce are sold in the markets. Various attempts have also been made for the acclamatisation through cultivation of medicinal plants from one zone to another in the Region. The crude drugs produce from the region are traded in the markets of Assam, West Bengal, Bihar and even in the Central market of Delhi. High valued medicinal plants from the states of North east are Acorus calamus, Aconitum heterophyllum, Aquilaria malaccensis, Bacopa monnieri, Berberis aristata, Coptis teeta, Costus speciosus, Curcuma caesia, Elaeocarpus sphericus, Embelia ribes ,Gmelina arborea, Gynocordia odorata, Hydnocarpus kurzii, Homalomena aromatica, Mesua ferrea, Nardostachys jatamansi, Paris polyphylla, Picrorhiza kurrooa, Rheum australe, Rubia cordifolia, Smilax china, Solanum anguivi, Swertia chirayita Taxus wallichiana, Trichosanthis bracteata, Valeriana jatamansi, Zanthoxylum armatum, etc. For the study of the potential and sustainable collection from forest areas, interaction with local people involved either in collection or having knowledge about the collection in and adjoining areas. Various conservational aspects for insitu conservation and aspects on easy methods for cultivation which are easily acceptable by the inhabitants nearby forest areas have been worked out which is incorporated in the paper.

The present investigation was carried out to document ethano-medicinal plant diversity in agroforestry land-use in Govind pashuvihar wildlife sanctuary Uttarakhand. For the present study 10 sample plots of 1 hectare each were randomly placed in 5 selected villages across the wildlife sanctuary. A total of 29 plant species including 22 herbs, 5 shrubs and 2 tree species were recorded to have medicinal importance in the local recipe. Asteraceae (4), Rosaceae (4) and Polygonaceae (4) form the dominant families of medicinal importance. These plants were used to treat a total of 17 different diseases. The medicinal plants in high altitudes are facing multiple threats due to multiple causes and it is thus imperative to have alternative land-use for conservation of these medicinal plants and agroforestry being the prominent land-use could be precursor for the conservation of medicinal plants and evade pressure from the natural habitat.

The objective of forest management in the tropics, in recent decades, has shifted from timber production to biodiversity conservation and maintenance of life support system. However, past forestry practices have greatly influenced the structure of plant communities, preponderance of foreign invasive species, populations of high value medicinal plants as well as other non-wood forest products. We assessed the abundance and distribution of medicinal plants in managed and undisturbed forests of Dehradun Forest Division (DFD), Uttarakhand (India). A total of 80 transects (each 1 km long) were laid in various categories of forest types in DFD. This paper deals with distribution, availability and regeneration status of five commercially important species viz., Justicia adhatoda, Aegle marmelos, Phyllanthus emblica, Terminalia bellirica and Terminalia chebula, across different forest types.
