Aims: Al Jouf area is gifted with a wide range of plant genera belonging to different plant families. In a research program targeting the phytochemical exploration of this area plants, three species representing the genus Suaeda in this area; S. aegyptiaca, S. fruticosa and S. mollis (Family Chenopodiaceae) were subjected for investigation. The present study aimed to explore the secondary metabolite pattern of the three Suaeda species growing in Al Jouf area, through assessment of the total phenolics, total flavonoids and anti-oxidant activity of four different extracts of S. aegyptiaca, Suaeda fruticosa and Suaeda mollis. Methodology: Finely powdered plant material (50 g) of each of the three plant species were exhaustively extracted with ethanol, methanol, ethyl acetate and water. Total phenolics content, total flavonoids content and anti-oxidant activity of all extracts for each species were assessed using Folin Ciocalteu, Aluminium chloride and DPPH assay methods, respectively. Results: Different extracts showed variable percentage yield of each of the three Suaeda species.
Antioxidant activity of the stem of Suaeda monoica was studied for its free radical scavenging property on different in vitro models eg DPPH, hydroxyl, superoxide, ABTS radical cation scavenging and reducing power by using different solvents. Total phenolic and flavonoid contents were estimated. The methanol extract showed promising free radical scavenging activity in dose dependent manner. This antioxidant potency may be related to the presence of antioxidant phenolic and flavonoid compounds present in the extract. These results clearly indicate that Suaeda monoica stem is effective against free radical mediated disease.

Suaeda fruticosa is an edible and medicinal halophyte known for its hypoglycaemic and hypolipidaemic activities. In this study, novel biological activities of the shoot extracts related to their phenolics were investigated. Results showed an appreciable total phenolic (31.8 mg GAE/g DW) in shoot extracts. The estimation of antioxidant capacities using oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC method) and a cell based-assay (WS1) of four extracts (hexane, dichloromethane, methanol and water) showed that shoot methanol extract exhibit the highest antioxidant activities. The same extract displayed the utmost anti-inflammatory activity, inhibiting nitric oxide (NO) release, by 66.4% at 160 lg/ml in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW 264.7 macrophages. Besides, the dichloromethane extract showed the highest anticancer activity against human lung carcinoma (A-549) and colon adenocarcinoma cell lines (DLD-1, Caco-2 and HT-29) with specificity against DLD-1 (IC 50 = 10 ± 1 lg/ml). These findings demonstrate the remarkable potentiality of this edible halophyte as valuable source of antioxidants which exhibit original and interesting anti-inflammatory and anticancer capacities.
GC-MS Analysis and Bioactivities of the Essential Oil of Suaeda aegyptiaca

Suaeda aegyptiaca is a halophytic plant widely growing in northeast Africa and Asia. The current study reports on the GC-MS analysis of S. aegyptiaca essential oil. The essential oil was prepared using three different methods: cold n-hexane extraction (CHE), hot n-hexane extraction (HHE), and hydro-distillation extraction (HDE). The GC-MS analysis detected twenty-eight compounds in both CHE (97.28%) and HHE (97.35%) and twenty compounds in HDE (98.65%). 2-methyloctacosane (48.72%); 11-decyldocosane (29.20%); and 1, 2-benzenedicarboxylic acid diisooctyl ester (57.87%) were the main constituents in CHE, HHE, and HDE, respectively. Free radical scavenging activity testing using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) revealed the notable anti-oxidant potential of HDE (IC50 0.358 mg/mL) compared to ascorbic acid (IC50 0.264 mg/mL). Suaeda fruticosa Forssk. Ex J.F.Gmel is traditionally used for inflammatory and digestive disorders, as a carminative, and for diarrhea. This plant is widely distributed in Asia, Africa, and the Mediterranean region. Aqueous methanolic extract of S. fruticosa (Sf.Cr) was prepared and screened for phytoconstituents through qualitative and GC-MS analysis. Quantification of total phenolic and flavonoid contents was performed, while antioxidant capacity was determined by DPPH, CUPRAC, FRAP, and ABTS assays. The gastroprotective activity was assessed in an ethanol-induced ulcer model. Gastric secretory parameters and macroscopic ulcerated lesions were analyzed and scored for ulcer severity. Antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anticancer activities of Tunisian halophyte Suaeda mollis

The aim of this study was to investigate the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer properties of Tunisian Suaeda mollis specie after fractionation by increasing polarity of several extracts (Hexane, Dichloromerthane, Methanol and water). Water and methanol extracts of S. mollis exhibited the best in vitro antioxidant ability (2.92±0.19 and 2.77±0.21 µmol TE/mg, respectively), while, dichloromethane extract displayed the highest ex vivo antioxidant activity with an IC 50 equal to 1.73 µg/ml. Besides, hexane extract showed an important anti-inflammatory effect inhibiting NO with 55.9% at 160 µg/ml. Finally, dichloromethane extract displayed a potent anticancer activity against cancerous cells A-549 with an IC 50 equal to 70±7 µg/ml as well as non cancerous cells Detroit-551 and WS1 (IC 50 =81±1 and 62±5 µg/ml, respectively) using resazurin test. Moreover, hexane extract is efficient against Caco-2 (IC 50 =122 µg/ml). Overall, the results suggested that biological activities are influenced by solvent polarity and extractability.

Plants have been valuable and indispensable sources of natural products for the health of human beings and they have a great potential for producing new drugs. Halophytes are salt tolerant plants. They survive in different salt concentration. Halophytes are good in secondary metabolite like alkaloids, flavanoids, phenols, tannins, saponins, carbohydrate and proteins. Suaeda fruticosa is halophytic plant. It has a higher amount of secondary metabolites. Also they act as an antioxidant, antibacterial and cancerous and antimicrobial. With the preliminary screening we analyses the presence or absence of secondary metabolites. It is used in various diseases and also it serves as an ethnomedicinal plant.
Pharmacognostical Standardization of Stem of Suaeda Maritima (L.) Dumort
Suaeda maritima (L.) Dumort (Chenopodiaceae) is a mangrove herb, commonly known as Indian salt blite in English, found in salt marshy areas of India. The leaves of plant have been used as medicine for hepatitis traditionally. It is reported to possess antiviral, antibacterial activity and antioxidant activity etc. The present study was carried out to establish the pharmacognostical studies, physico-chemical parameters along with preliminary phytochemical screening of petroleum ether, chloroform, methanolic and aqueous extracts of Suaeda maritima (L.) Dumort. The macroscopical and microscopical characters were studied. The transverse section (T.S.) of stem indicated the arrangement of various cells in cork, cortex, phelloderm and pith region.
