European Stroke Organisation certification of stroke units and stroke centres
European Stroke Journal
To improve quality and to overcome the wide discrepancies in stroke care both within- and between European countries, the European Stroke Organisation Executive Committee initiated in 2007 activities to establish certification processes for stroke units and stroke centres. The rapidly expanding evidence base in stroke care provided the mandate for the European Stroke Organisation Stroke Unit-Committee to develop certification procedures for stroke units and stroke centres with the goals of setting standards for stroke treatment in Europe, improving quality and minimising variation. The purpose of this article is to present the certification criteria and the auditing process for stroke units and stroke centres that aim to standardise and harmonise care for stroke patients, and hence become members of the European Stroke Organisation Stroke Unit and Stroke Centre network. Standardised application forms and guidelines for national and international auditors have been developed and upda...
Certification of stroke centre and stroke units in Switzerland
Clinical and Translational Neuroscience, 2018
In Switzerland, since 2011, a mandatory certification system for stroke units (SUs) and stroke centres has been successfully implemented. Detailed criteria for stroke centres and SUs focusing on leadership, specialized staff, infrastructure, diagnostic procedures, treatment procedures, monitoring, education, research and key data have been defined by the Swiss Federation of Clinical Neurosocieties Swiss Stroke Committee mainly based on recommendations of the Swiss Stroke Society and European Stroke Organisation. During the certifications procedures, a very close and fruitful cooperation between stroke centres and SUs and other hospitals in regional networks could be observed. Improvement in the infrastructure and the quality of stroke care has been achieved during the last years.
Stroke Units : efficacy and quality indicators (English version starts on page 22)
This study aims to investigate the clinical benefits of stroke units, the quality indicators proposed in the international literature and the organization of stroke units in other European countries. What is the evidence about the impact of admission to acute stroke (systematic review and meta-analysis)? Which quality criteria for stroke units are proposed in the literature and what is their underlying scientific evidence (literature review)? How are stroke units organized in other countries? What is the quality including the quality criteria (literature review and questionnaire) In view of the previous questions, what are the suggestions for the organization of stroke units in Belgium and for the assessment of quality stroke care?
Recommendations from the ESO-Karolinska Stroke Update Conference, Stockholm 13–15 November 2016
European Stroke Journal, 2017
About the meeting: The purpose of the European Stroke Organisation (ESO)-Karolinska Stroke Update Conference is to provide updates on recent stroke therapy research and to give an opportunity for the participants to discuss how these results may be implemented into clinical routine. Several scientific sessions discussed in the meeting and each session produced consensus statements. The meeting started 20 years ago as Karolinska Stroke Update, but since 2014, it is a joint conference with ESO. Importantly, it provides a platform for discussion on the ESO guidelines process and on recommendations to the ESO guidelines committee on specific topics. By this, it adds a direct influence from stroke professionals otherwise not involved in committees and work groups on the guidelines procedure. The discussions at the conference may also inspire new guidelines when motivated. The topics raised at the meeting are selected by the scientific programme committee mainly based on recent important ...
