The Finnish linguist G.J.Ramstedt is well known for his pioneering role in establishing the field of Altaic comparative linguistics, as well as serving in a diplomatic capacity as the first charged'affaires at the Finnish legation in Japan from 1919 to 1929. It was during this ten-year stay in Japan that he concentrated his efforts on attempting to discover the origin of the Japanese language and published a treatise on his research in 1924. In writing this article, I surveyed a range of topics, not only those included in Ramstedt's research findings, but also those in the similar stream of studies by his predecessors, as well as observations and evaluations of his work made by other comparative linguists. Ramstedt's work was carried out through comparisons of the various aspects of the Altaic languages, and outlines a solid and potent methodology of establishing a possible genetic relation between Japanese and the Altaic languages. The Pedagogic Principles of Teaching Russian Adjectives to Japanese Students

This study of the pedagogic principles of teaching Russian adjectives is based on the personal experience of the author and a brief review of the main textbooks written in Japanese. Acquisition of Tense and Aspect in Cross-Referential Learners' Corpora of English, Chinese and Japanese

This paper focuses on L1 transfer in the acquisition of tense and aspect by Japanese and Chinese learners in the International Corpus of Japanese as a Second Language (I-JAS) and TUFS International Learners' Corpora of English, Chinese and Japanese. First, we introduce the benefit of using Cross-Referential Learners' Corpora of English, Chinese and Japanese to reveal various types of L1 transfer. For example, L1 Japanese and L1 English learners of Chinese show a difference in the acquisition of the Chinese determiner "One + Classifier + Noun Phrase" which is obligatory in a telic sentence. L1 English learners acquire "One + Classifier + Noun Phrase" correctly while L1 Japanese advanced learners show difficulty in acquiring the determiner usage of "One + Classifier + Noun Phrase". We suggest that the linguistic cognitive typology in L1 affects the second language acquisition of the aspectual system in the target language; both English and Chinese are "Bounded"-oriented languages while Japanese is an "Unbounded" type language in terms of aspectual boundedness. The purpose of this study is to review the studies on persuasion in Japan. An examination has been made of 152 persuasion studies published in Japan-141 journal papers and 11 technical books. The present study consists of the following five parts. 4. Message variables: (7) discrepancy, (8) ego involvement, (9) other message variables. 5. Recipient variables: (1) gender, (2) age, (3) personality, (4) other recipient variables. 6. Context variables: (1) warning, (2) mood and emotion, (3) distraction, (4) other context variables. 7.
