Abstract

One of the most forward-looking musicians of the Romantic era, the Hungarian composer Franz Liszt excelled in various musical pursuits. As a composer he developed new compositional techniques; as a pianist he formed a new style of pianism; as a conductor he tirelessly promoted the music of his contemporaries; as a teacher he influenced most of the leading pianists of the next generation; and as a Christian Liszt fought a lifelong battle to balance his worldly ambitions and spiritual aspirations.
