An Overview of Biometric System
A. M. Bojamma, B. Nithya & Prasad. C. N, 2013
The term biometric comes from the Greek words bios (life) and metrikos (measure).Humans have used body characteristics such as face, voice, gait, etc. for thousands of years to recognize each other. With the proliferation of computers networks in our day to day life, the increased number of applications making use of such networks leads to a problem of identity theft [7] .A wide variety of systems requires reliable personal recognition schemes to either confirm or determine the identity of an individual. Biometric technology is more convenient and efficient than any other protection technologies used for identity authentication. Biometric technology plays a key role in recognizing humans based on their body Characteristics .The purpose of such schemes is to make sure that the rendered services are accessed only by a legitimate user, and not by anyone else. Hence Biometrics plays a vital role in securing one’s privacy using various Biometrics techniques through which fraudulence can be avoided. Biometric technology is considered one of the best protection methods of user information and data[8].
Comparative Study of Security Mechanism of Biometric Technologies
Abstract: With the increasing concerns for security, automated systems for authorization and authentication have become enormously important in every sector today. The need to secure information, services, and systems has increased. Conventional methods of authentications are knowledge based like passwords and PIN or object based like tokens, ID. Problem with these methods is that passwords can be cracked, ID can be stolen, and PIN can be forgotten. But Biometric systems that are currently available today examine fingerprints, handprints, iris and retina patterns, and face. Biometric cannot be borrowed; stolen, or forgotten and forging one is also very difficult. Biometrics can be categorized as behavioral and physiological. The main aim of this study is to make a comparative study of multimodal biometrics and declare the best effective method of biometrics that offers both security and convenience. Keywords: biometrics, identification, verification, Applications. This paper presents an overview of the main topics related to biometric security technology, with the main purpose to provide a primer on this subject. Biometrics can offer greater security and convenience than traditional methods for people recognition. Even if we do not want to replace a classic method (password or handheld token) by a biometric one, for sure, we are potential users of these systems, which will even be mandatory for new passport models. For this reason, to be familiarized with the possibilities of biometric security technology is useful.
Study of Biometric Authentication Systems and Their Security
2015
A biometric system is fundamentally a pattern recognition system that recognizes a person by determining the authentication by using his different biological features i.e. Fingerprint, retina-scan, iris scan, hand geometry, and face recognition are leading physiological biometrics and behavioral characteristic are Voice recognition, keystroke-scan, and signature-scan. Biometrics is a growing technology, which has been widely used in forensics, secured access and prison security. This paper deals with the design of a biometric security system based upon the fingerprint and speech technology. In this paper different biometrics techniques such as Iris scan, retina scan and face recognition techniques are discussed. We would like to outline our opinions about the usability of biometric authentication systems. We outline the position of biometrics in the current field of computer security.
A Survey on Biometrics Security System
International Journal of Recent Trends in Engineering and Research, 2018
Biometrics is a rapidly evolving technology which is being widely used in forensics such as criminal identification and prison security, and has the potential to be used in a large range of civilian application areas. Biometrics can be used to prevent unauthorized access to ATMs, cellular phones, smart cards, desktop PCs, workstations, and computer networks. It can be used during transactions conducted via telephone and internet (electronic commerce and electronic banking). In automobiles, biometrics can replace keys with key-less entry devices. Although many technologies fit in the biometric space, each works a bit differently. Relatively new on the biometric scene, face recognition devices use PC-attached cameras to record facial geometry. Once the biometric data is collected, it is encrypted and stored-locally, in the case of the desktop-only products; in a central database for the network solutions. When a user tries to log on, the software compares the incoming biometric data against the stored data.
A Comparative Study of some Biometric Security Technologies
Authentication plays a very critical role in security related applications. This is obvious from the breaches of information systems recorded around the world. This has become a major challenge to ecommerce and many other applications. One of the techniques that is implemented today to improve information security is biometrics, and this is gaining attention as the days go by. Having realized its value, biometrics is used in most systems today for the verification and identification of users as it overcomes the problems of being stolen, borrowed, forged or forgetting. In this paper therefore, we show the origin and types of biometrics, their areas of application, and what to look out for in selecting a biometric technology. https://sites.google.com/site/ijcsis/
A Review on Biometric Technology
International Journal of Advanced Research in Computer Science and Software Engineering, 2018
Biometric Technology has turned out to be a popular area of research in computer vision and one of the most successful applications for identifying humans by capturing and analysing the sole feature or characteristic of individual which is possessed by them and involves their Physical and Behavioral characteristics. For the individual validation and authentication the biometric system has this responsibility. Biometric Technology started from the fingerprints recognition and later on improvements were done in it to make it more secure which involves the face recognition and iris Recognition. Almost both of them are available and regarded as the accurate and reliable technology for biometric validation system. This review paper is all about Face recognition techniques in biometric locking system and Iris recognition technique of identification and the ways of making locking systems ways more efficient, full of ease, more secure, and far better than before so as to make locking or security stronger. It discusses about face recognition technique, its working and its application in different sector along with iris recognition, its working, its application.
Comparative and Analysis Study of Biometric Systems
2019
In recent years, there has been a growing interest in the field of biometrics as a powerful identification technology. Various biometric technologies are based on behavioral and physiological analysis; therefore they must be reliable, robust, simple and cheap. In this paper, we have investigated an analytical comparison of different biometric systems namely: fingerprint, iris, face, voice, keystroke dynamics, signature, retina, etc. and we have classified these methods based on several criteria such as: universality, uniqueness, permanency, intrusiveness, effort, cost, and reliability, as well as the most used biometric systems requested in the market and those that are of greater interest in the current research work, and for each criteria we gave synthetic discussions. Furthermore, we provided a brief overview of biometric methods, then we have described the modes used in a biometric system such as enrollment, verification and identification and we have presented the possible appl...
A STUDY ON KEY BIOMETRIC TECHNOLOGIES: CHARACTERISTICS AND APPLICATIONS
Over the last few years a new area of engineering science has been established whose products are likely to create a large market in the near future. It has been called ''biometrics”. The pioneers of this new domain intend to construct devices which would allow identification of a person on the basis of his/her ''biological'' characteristics: voice, dynamics of movements, features of face and other parts of the body, retina or iris pattern. Nature has made human beings with different characteristics which may vary from one person to another. Biometric system is essentially a pattern recognition system which recognizes a user by determining the authenticity of a specific physiological or behavioral characteristic possessed by the user. Several important issues must be considered in designing a practical biometric system. First, a user must be enrolled in the system so that his biometric template can be captured. This template is securely stored in a central database or a smart card issued to the user. The template is retrieved when an individual needs to be identified. Depending on the context, a biometric system can operate either in verification (authentication) or an identification mode. This paper gives an overview of key biometric technologies and basic technique involved. The various opportunities for biometrics are mentioned, followed by the uses, benefits, and applications.
