Design and Implementation of an Efficient Smart Digital Energy Meter

International Journal of Soft Computing and Engineering (IJSCE), 2023

In this research, the development of digital prepaid energy meters for homes and businesses that use GSM technology is discussed. The reduction of billing cost electricity wastage is the primary goal of prototype development. The GSM module is used to receive short messaging service (SMS) from the user's mobile phone, which automatically enables the controller to take any further action, such as to help the consumer save money by using prepaid energy meter systems offered by power generation and distribution companies. Embedded C is used to integrate the system's microcontroller and GSM network interface. The integration was carried out using Easy EDA software. When the balance on the energy meter falls too low, the system sends the consumer an SMS. Consumer research is then lacking, leaving power without. After getting the SMS command, the Consumer then balances his or her investigation. Therefore, each item facilitates the usage of electrical power in homes and businesses. The prepaid energy meter is then turned ON or OFF by the microcontroller unit, which subsequently automatically controls the electrical power to homes and businesses. In other words, it responds to the message it receives by reading it from the cell phone and controlling the equipment accordingly

A Reviev Paper on Automatic Energy Meter Reading System

2022

The focus of this study was on the automatic reading of energy meter for billing purposes.[1] This task is accomplished using remote metre readings using GSM technology, which is used for remote readings as and when needed. As a result, there is no need to send somebody to the customer's location to gather manual readings. Smart energy metre (SEM) are these types of metre that can communicate directionally and push data without the utility's intervention. Another advantage of this method is that it can disconnect customer load if it exceeds its predefined load limit by simply sending an SMS to the client once the load is disconnected. Both the utility and the client have access to it.

Embedded Based Digital Energy Measurement for Improved Metering and Billing System

2013

In this research paper, the proposed concept is to replace the traditional manual meter reading. Now a days the traditional manual Meter Reading was not suitable for longer operating purposes as it spends much human and material resource. It brings additional problems in calculation of readings and billing manually. The number of Electricity consumers is increasing in great extent. It became a hard task in handling and maintaining the power as per the growing requirements. Presently maintenance of the power is also an important task as the human operator goes to the consumer’s house and produces the bill as per the meter reading. If the consumer is not available, the billing process will be pending and human operator again needs to revisit. Going to each and every consumer’s house and generating the bill is a laborious task and requires lot of time. It becomes very difficult especially in rainy season. If any consumer did not pay the bill, the operator needs to go to their houses to ...

DIGITAL METERING SYSTEM: A BETTER ALTERNATIVE FOR ELECTROMECHANICAL ENERGY METER IN NIGERIA

INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL Of ACADEMIC RESEARCH, 2011

The energy metering technology used presently in Nigeria is not highly reliable and requires substantial labour and time to read, calculate and distribute bills. The need to digitize the existing Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) analogue meter and the increasing demand for smart energy compatible meter necessitated this paper. Shifting from the analogue formalities, this device incorporates voltage and current sensors and signal conditioning, all built from discrete components, PIC and liquid crystal display unit. The PIC incorporates both a Peripheral Interface Controller and a ten bit analogue to digital converter. The PIC being an embedded program driven device is programmed in C language. This design does not only make meter reading easier, but displays power consumption per time as well as expected bill to be paid. The design methodology is presented with other details in the body of this paper.

Smart Energy Meter

BIUST Research and Innovation Symposium 2019 (RDAIS 2019), 2019

This paper presents a smart energy meter for automatic metering and billing system. The integration of a mircocontroller and GSM short message service (SMS) provides the meter reading system with automatic functions that are predefined. The GSM module requires a SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) card just like mobile phones to activate communication with the network. Direct current (DC) components are used to control alternating current (AC) loads. To isolate these components from each other, relays with a network of resistors and diodes are used. Users can recharge and control loads remotely. Utility companies also have remote access to the system such as fault diagnosis and communicating with clients. The proposed energy meter system (EMS) transmits data like consumed energy in kWh and generates a bill over a GSM mobile network. Other advantages include that the system provides domestic power consumption accurately, safely and with a relatively fast update rate. Keywords-SMART energy meter, mircocontroller, GSM short message service (SMS), energy meter system (EMS), remote access, direct current (DC), alternating current (AC)

Design of Intelligent Energy Meter

International Journal of Scientific Research in Science, Engineering and Technology, 2023

Power is one of the most fundamental necessities of individuals, which is usually utilized for household activities, industries and farming purposes. Protection of the system from the occurrence of various accidents is the most concerning issue as it costs a lot of money to both the government and consumers. In nations like India, these circumstances are on a more regular basis, due to lack of maintenance and carelessness. In order to prevent the occurrence of such accidents we are using an Intelligent Energy Meter (IEM). IEM is an electronic device having a microcontroller interfaced with the energy meter to alert the consumer or the authority from various occurrence of accidents before handedly and also generates bill automatically at the first of every month. This paper presents an intelligent energy meter for a programmed metering. In this energy meter power used and the activation status of several sensors will be shown on the Blynk app simultaneously and conveyed to the consumers. Every accident that are about to happen are sensed and alert message is sent to the user using Wi-fi module. Wi-fi network is utilized for sending notification to the users as it is one of the faster communication technologies with respect to the short distance. The proposed system is far more advantageous than conventional energy meter and empowers remote access of existing energy meter by the energy supplier. In addition, they can screen the meter readings consistently without the individual visiting each house, as the amount of power consumption is notified to the user.

Electronic Energy Meter with Remote Monitoring and Billing System

Electronic energy meter is capable of taking readings and can store it into its memory. Taking energy meter reading is time consuming and an expensive task. The meter reader travels for a long distance and take the reading manually to prepare the bill. Consumers have to go to the billing office, stand in a long line and submit the bill. This is a boring job and time consuming also. It can be avoided by remote monitoring of electronic energy meter and prepaid billing system by the use of cash card. In this paper measurement of energy, remote monitoring, preparing of bill and billing system is presented. Low cost ATMEGA8L microcontroller is used here to control the whole system. Sampling of voltage and current is done by it. Then it processes data to achieve power in that instant. Then it stores the value of total energy consumed by the consumer and can calculate energy charge according to the tariff. LCD display is attached with this system to show total energy consumed, power factor and amount of charge etc. Communication between central energy distribution office and energy meter is done through power line. Complex tariff rate set up and cash card based billing is possible in this system. Electronic meter gives high accuracy for nonlinear loads than conventional rotating disc type electro-mechanical meter. Greater accuracy and stability can be maintained in this system.
