The study investigated the effects of individualized counselling technique on remedying truancy among junior secondary school students. Two null hypotheses were formulated and tested at the 0.05 level of significance. Forty truant students aged 11-13 were randomly selected from JS 1 and JS II students of Capital City Secondary School, Awka. Quasi - experimental design was used for the study. Two instruments were used. Truant identification for teachers and a checklist on children's truancy were developed and validated. Results were analysed using t -test. The experimental groups were exposed to treatment conditions, while the control group was not. The findings showed that using individual counselling techniques had significant effects on truants and consequently reduced truancy. The truants in the experimental group acquired more effective regular school behaviour. Implications of the findings were shown and recommendations were made
Self-Concept in Student Learning and Motivation Truant : Descriptive-Correlational Studies
This research is aimed to describe the learning motivation and self-concept of students who truant. This study used a descriptive quantitative method. The research conducted by the students of SMAN 5 Padangsidimpuan in the period of 2015/2016 with the total of the population was 420 students. Amount of research sample was 36 students and had been chosen by using purposive sampling technique. An instrument employed in this study was a Likert-scaled questionnaire. Data were analyzed by using percentage technique and the relationship between the two variables was analyzed by using nonparametric statistic, that is Spearman's Coefficient of Rank Correlation. Results of this research are just like the following: 1) participants' level of achievement on self-concept of students who truant is about 69,8%, 2) participants' level of achievement on learning motivation of students who truant is about 69,2%, and 3) correlation coefficient of selfconcept and learning motivation of students who truant is about 0,581. Therefore, it can be concluded that students who truancy have very low self-concept and learning motivation, and there is a significant relationship between self-concept and learning motivation. The implication in guidance counseling services is to create a service program which can increase self-concept and be learning motivation of students who truant.

The purpose of this study is to determine the effectiveness of cognitive restructuring technique to reduce students’ truant behavior of Surabaya Pharmacy School. This study used experimental methods with Randomized Pretest-Posttest Control Group Design. The stage of the study was the preparation, the implementation, and the final stage. The subject of study was twelve students of Surabaya Pharmacy School from first, second, and third grades taken at random through the student truancy scale and divided into two groups, control and experiment group. The intervention is done by doing the counseling group with cognitive restructuring technique to reduce the student’s truancy behavior. The Data was analyzed using SPSS Paired Sampled T-Test. The phenomenon of disciplinary problems of the student is still happen. Discipline behavior is a behavior that demonstrates obedience and compliance which requires students to comply with established regulations. One of the most frequent disciplinary violations is leaving school without permission. Several factors that influence students to break discipline are environmental factors. Therefore, it needs proper handling in overcoming discipline problems of students. one technique that can be used in overcoming disciplinary problems, namely self-management. In the use of self management techniques to overcome undisciplined behavior students are directed to modify environmental aspects that can influence the emergence of undisciplined behavior.
Motivational/solution-focused intervention for reducing school truancy among adolescents

The objective of this study was to assess the efficiency of a package of motivational stimulation techniques in reducing school truancy rates among adolescents. The program was carried out between March and June 2007 and it comprised 8 group counseling sessions per week, each session lasting one hour. The techniques used combined intrinsic motivational stimulation strategies, motivational interviewing and solution-focused counseling, with strategies focusing on extrinsic methods, such as successive approximation of behavior, behavior contracts and reinforcement techniques. Participants were adolescents, aged 16-17 years, divided into two groups, 19 students in the experimental group, and 19 in the control group. Our data indicated a 61% decrease in truancy rates for the experimental group, a significant difference compared to the control group, where no drops in truancy rates were observed. Truancy which is considered an antisocial behaviour and a delinquent act have caused a lot of set backs for children, adolescents and youths in their educational pursuits. It has eaten deep into the fabrics of Nigeria educational programmes and has an ill-attitude on secondary students academic achievement, and moral lives which has caused most youths exhibit negative attitude such as armed robbery, prostitution, drug abuse, and drug trafficking and other social crimes ranging from pick-pocketing to secret cult. Hence, this study seeks to analytically investigate the effect ofself-concept on truancy among secondary school students in Osogbo, Osun State of Nigeria.Data analysis involved the use of ASCS and TRS in collating of data. The data were analyzed using linear regression and Inter Correlation Matrix. The results showed that self concept waspositively and significantly correlated with truancy. Meaning that self-concept’s impact on truancy was 0.205, P <0.05. Based on the findings of the study, it is recommended that counseling units should be established in all secondary schools in the country so as to enhance social and psychological interest of students in schooling. More so, parents should monitor their wards and talk openly about the type of peers their children keep.
Psycho-Behavioural Factors Contributing To Truancy Among Malay Secondary School Students In Malaysia
Objective: Truancy is a disciplinary problem, which frequently occurs among school students and it has many contributory as well as interrelated factors. It is a growing problem in this country and it often becomes a prelude to other delinquent behaviours. The study objective is to determine the prevalence of truancy as well as factors related to it including psycho-behavioural factors. Methods: A cross-sectional study involving 556 Malay student's selected using multi-stage sampling was conducted. Results: The overall prevalence of truancy is 30.2%. The predictors to truancy are age, students who frequenting entertainment centre, students who have not completed Quran recital, coping strategies using problems solving methods and time spent watching television/video. There is a significant association between truancy and psycho-behaviour such as watching video/internet pornography, frequenting entertainment centre, smoking, motorcycle racing and dating a special friend. Conclusion: Truancy is a social issue, which must be given serious attention by all concerned components of the society.
This study examines approaches to solve the problem of truancy among secondary school students in Kuala Terengganu, Malaysia. The study investigated school-based interventions, role of teachers and role of parent teachers' association in solving truancy. Descriptive survey research design was used where self-administered questionnaires were given to 100 teachers and 100 parents in five selected secondary schools within Kuala Terengganu district. The schools include: Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Kompleks Gong Badak, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Ibrahim Fikri, Sekolah Menengah Agama Khairiah, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Mengabang Telipot, and Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Bukit Besar. The data obtained was analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 19.0. Descriptive statistics was used to determine the mean, frequency, percentages and standard deviation of the respondents. The findings of the study indicated that school-based interventions have a positive impact in solving truancy. Role of teachers was also found to have a significant impact in solving truancy. However, based on the result, role of parent teachers' association was significant in solving the problem of students' truants' behaviour. Finally, recommendations were given to school administrators, teachers and parents.

Academic Self-Concept, Self-Esteem, and Academic Achievement among Truant and Punctual Students
School drop-out is one of the major concerns that hamper youth's progress in professional setting. Truancy and run away from school is leading cause for such drop-outs. The present study was aimed to examine the role of truancy in academic self-concept, self-esteem, and academic achievement through a comparison between truant and punctual students. A purposive sample of 200 students (Truant = 100, Punctual = 100) participated in the study. Age range was 12-18 years. Urdu versions of Academic self-concept (Ahmed, 1986) and Self-Esteem Scales Questionnaire, (Rifai, Ward, Borden, & Wilson, 1995) were used. Results showed that punctual students had significantly superior academic achievement than truant students. Academic self-concept has positive relationship with the self-esteem of the students regardless of being truant and punctual. Self-competence, self-acceptance, and academic self-competence as domains of self-esteem were found predictors self-concept in truant students, whiles self-acceptance and social and physical self-acceptance were significant predictors of self-concept for punctual students. Truancy/punctuality did not play a moderating for self-esteem in predicting academic self-concept. Limitations, implications of the study and suggestions for future research are discussed. This study would be beneficial for educational and clinical setting to enhance self-esteem to improve upon academic success of students.
