The EFL Rural Students’ Experiences in Coping with Online Learning During the Covid-19 Pandemic

This study aims to explore the learning experiences of the Indonesian rural students during the Covid-19 pandemic which had transitioned to online learning and solutions. A phenomenological approach was used as a research methodology using semi-structured interviews for the data collection. This study was conducted in one Islamic higher education with seven participants. The data were analyzed through thematic analysis by comparing each participant's interview result in the form of research themes. The five themes that emerged in this study are: adapting to online learning, internet access, learning environment, and learning autonomy. The findings of the study indicate that online learning is a problem for the participants who live in rural areas. These problems were caused by unfamiliarity with the online learning method, unstable internet connection, lack of parents’ support, and learning autonomy. Online Learning: Challenges for Education in Rural and Remote Areas

Educational institutes across India have been closed since mid-March 2020 due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Schools and colleges in rural, remote areas of India are experiencing unprecedented challenges due to the closure of institutions. Against this backdrop, the present paper explored the challenges of online learning in rural areas for all stakeholders. This qualitative investigation was conducted on two students, two parents, and two teachers in rural areas. The uniqueness of the study is that it analysed the challenges of online learning from the perspective of students, teachers, and parents. It is found from the study that online teaching-learning is challenging due to multiple factors such as lack of technical gadgets, poor network connectivity, and electricity problems. Lack of previous experience in online teaching is a major shortcoming for teachers. Parental literacy and student interest are other hindrances. Stress has been experienced by parents, students, and teachers due to the transition from traditional to online learning.

Students’ Perception of Online Learning during COVID-19 Pandemic: A Case Study on the English Students of STKIP Pamane Talino

The pandemic of COVID-19 has forced the Indonesian government through its Ministry of Education and Culture to implement policies moving conventional classroom to online classroom. The current study is a collective case study consisting of analysis of survey on students' perceptions of their online learning during the pandemic. Sixty-six students of English Language Education Study Program at Pamane Talino College of Education (STKIP Pamane Talino) were involved. Their perception s of their online classroom that were recorded through a survey. The recorded perceptions are in terms of students' participation, accessibility, material and assignment delivery, and the use of e-learning platforms. The results were then summarized into tables and narrative descriptions. The study identified three major obstacles in conducting online learning in English Language Education Study Program at STKIP Pamane Talino: the first is availability and sustainability of internet connection, the second is accessibility of the teaching media, and the last is the compatibility of tools to access the media. The result of the current study suggests that accessibility is still the major factor influencing the success of online learning. Online learning for English Language Education Study Program at STKIP Pamane Talino, and potentially Indonesia in general, requires some more friendly platforms so that students' participation can be increased. This is especially for students who reside in rural areas with limited internet connections and other support systems.

The Implementation of Online Learning in Rural Areas During COVID-19: Voice of Rural English Teachers

This research investigates the rural teachers' voices related to implementing online learning during covid-19. Due to understanding the schools' readiness in remote areas, it is essential to carry out English learning activities in emergencies. The subject of this research was 6 English teachers from two schools. Three were from SMAN 1 Ruteng-Anam, and three other teachers from SMAN 1 Lelak Manggarai regency, Nusa Tenggara-Timur. This research is categorized as qualitative research. The data were explained descriptively. In collecting the data, a questionnaire and interview were used. The questionnaire consisted of 3 main questions involved. They covered the teachers' enthusiasm for Teaching English Using Technology, the Implementation of Online Learning During the COVID-19 Epidemic, and the obstacles that English teachers faced during the pandemic. The teachers' additional information was gathered in the interview section. The data were analyzed and explained descriptively based on the result of the questionnaires and interviews. STUDENTS' PERSPECTIVES OF ONLINE LANGUAGE LEARNING DURING CORONA PANDEMIC: BENEFITS AND CHALLENGES

This study aimed to elicit students' perspectives towards benefits and challenges of fully online classes at Hebron University. The researchers examined both advantages and challenges of online classes from students' point of view. Also, they explored some suggestions for improving online classes which could play an important role in improving the online learning and teaching process. The researchers employed quantitative research methods. They distributed a questionnaire to collect data. Eighty two students from two different English intensive courses were asked to fill a 5 point Likert scale questionnaire and answer four open-ended questions. The researchers used the surveyplanet app to facilitate the process of distributing and collecting data. The finding of this study showed that students faced some challenges with online learning; they preferred face to face classes. The disadvantages of online classes from their perspectives are more than the advantages. The weak internet connectivity, poor interaction, less motivation, less participation and less understanding are the most challenges of online learning. However, they find online classes easy to access, convenient and easy to be reviewed for exams.

How Rural Students Accomplish Online Learning During Pandemic: A Study from Elementary School in Indonesia

The Covid-19 pandemic has impacted all areas of life. Based on government restrictions, all educational institutions have implemented online learning. This study investigates elementary students' online learning experiences in rural areas. It refers to the data collected about: students learning motivation, students learning requirements and students' social skills. Data was collected through an online survey. Data were analyzed through three stages of Miles & Huberman, namely data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that during the Covid-19 pandemic, online learning was less effective for elementary students in rural areas. The value of this study is for comprehending what factors support and interfere with the learning satisfaction of elementary students in rural areas related to online learning during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Students’ Perception toward Online Learning in Pandemic Situations in English Speaking Classrooms

This study was aimed to know the students’ perception of online learning on Public Speaking class during Covid-19 pandemic. This study was the qualitative descriptive approach. Paano Naman Kami?: Online Learning in the Eyes of Students from Rural Areas of Davao De Oro

This study explores the lived experiences of college students located in rural areas having online classes. This qualitative phenomenological research involves in-depth interviews with 6 participants residing in Mabini and New Bataan, Davao de Oro. The researchers examine their experiences in transitioning to a new normal setting. Interviews were recorded, transcribed, and thematically analyzed. The study explores their feelings or experiences, challenges/problems during the class, and coping mechanisms. Collective narratives caused the uprising of themes in each research problem. Two themes emerged as central to their feelings experienced during classes as college students: Positive impact further specified as flexibility, organization, and wide resources, while the negative impact further specified are frustrating, strenuous, and uninspiring. On the other hand, two themes also emerged in the problems encountered by students, which are poor internet connectivity and an uncontrollable environment. The last themes emerged based on the coping mechanisms of the students, namely, Time and Role Management, Prioritization, and Consultation. This research provides insight into the experiences of these somewhat unknown struggles experienced during an online class. The findings from this study may also provide context and insights for postsecondary institutions, faculty, student services personnel, and family of students, as well as the students themselves.

The popularity of technology has allowed universities to make changes through their educational system in recent years. Some transitioned from face-to-face instruction to online instruction. The aim of this study is to investigate the perceptions of both the instructors and the students as regards second language acquisition through online education at a rural university. The study was implemented in the context of teaching and learning English as a second language in an online education environment. The course material is based on The Net Languages Learning Platform, which is available at http://ide.yok.gov.tr/, and the course level is general English pre-elementary. Both quantitative and qualitative methods were used in this study. For quantitative data collection, a questionnaire was employed to understand the reasons for low student attendance on online courses. For qualitative research method, observation was carried out, and interviews are designed as data collection techniques. Purposive selection was used for selection of the participants. The findings revealed that online education needs to be modified. The students are eager to improve their second language competencies; however, they do not want to waste their time on an easy course level.
