Understanding the leadership perspective in wildland firefighting: gaps and opportunities for growth

International Journal of Wildland Fire, 2019

This aim of this study was to develop and assess the viability of a leadership scale that measures leadership from the perspective of the leader. A criterion sample was used of firefighters across USA federal land management agencies who are qualified crew bosses. The Supervisor Perceived Leadership Scale (SPLS) consists of perceptions of items that have measured the most essential leadership skills-competent decision making, integrity and personal genuineness from the perspective of the subordinate in the previously developed Crewmember Perceived Leadership Scale (CPLS). Through confirmatory factor analysis, an 18-item, 2-factor structure was supported. However, the items that did not load were highly related and loaded well on the CPLS. The SPLS had a low to moderate relationship with authentic leadership and global competence. The gap between the SPLS and CPLS provides insight about the potential differences between the average fire leader and the exceptional fire leader. These results and implications for future research are discussed. Additional keywords: industrial psychology, leadership measure, organisational culture, organisational psychology, wildland fire.

Predominant Leadership Style in the 1 st Military Police Battalion in the State of Rondônia, Brazil

This research aimed to identify the predominant leadership style among the leaders of the 1st Military Police Battalion of Rondônia, among the leadership styles focused on Relationship, Task or Situation. As for the methodology, the research is classified as quantitative-descriptive since a questionnaire was applied to the respondents to identify which leadership style was perceived by the followers. The questionnaire was distributed electronically, using a link sent by the Slack application, means of communication used by the battalion. The questionnaire was based on the Management Style Assessment Scale (EAEG), developed by Melo (2004). This questionnaire consists of 19 statements about how leaders act, which must be evaluated by the respondents and rated from 1 to 5, with the respective extremes: Never acting like this and Always acting like that. The results achieved showed that the style focused on the Task presented an average of 4.314, while the style focused on the Situation presented an average of 4.231, finally the style focused on the Relationship presented an average of 4.009. Therefore, it can be concluded that the 1st Military Police Battalion of Rondônia presents the style that is expected in a military institution based on respect for hierarchy.

The Effect of Leadership Style on Firefighters Well-Being during an Emergency

Fire

Leaders are crucial to ensuring the well-being of their subordinates. This study aims to understand the effects of two leadership styles (empowering vs. directive) on subordinates’ well-being in an emergency situation (i.e., rural fire). A simulation study was conducted with two experimental conditions (empowering vs. directive leadership), and the subordinates’ stress levels were measured before and after the simulated episode. Contrary to expectations, empowering leadership had no significant effect on subordinates’ stress levels, while directive leadership contributed to reducing them. As expected, this effect was stronger for the subordinates with higher levels of stress prior to the simulated episode.

Measuring wildland fire leadership: the crewmember perceived leadership scale

International Journal of Wildland Fire, 2015

The aims of this research were to develop and test a scale used to measure leadership in wildland firefighting using two samples of USA wildland firefighters. The first collection of data occurred in the spring and early summer and consisted of an online survey. The second set of data was collected towards late summer and early fall (autumn). The second set of data was collected via hardcopy surveys that were mailed in by respondents who were recruited via email and in person at large wildland fires. Through confirmatory factor analyses, a three-factor, higher-order, multidimensional structure of leadership in wildland fire was supported. The Crewmember Perceived Leadership Scale consists of perceptions of competent decision-making, personal genuineness and integrity of supervisors as seen by their subordinates. Initial evidence of reliability and validity was supported during the first study of this research. Results from Study 1 indicate that higher rankings of fire leaders by their crewmembers was related to higher worker engagement and job satisfaction. The second study included an additional five items to rate fire leaders; the structure of the three leadership components was again supported. Implications for leadership development in wildland fire, future research and practice are discussed.

Management and Leadership Training in Police Organization

2019

Police organizations in Europe and worldwide are in the midst of change. The world has never changed as much as it has in the last decades, which means that the roles of police organizations in today’s societies are also changing rapidly. Police organizations face more challenging and more complex problems in more diverse societies. As a result, the police manager’s work has become more demanding. The importance of leadership to the performance of the organization has been demonstrated in various studies. Police organizations need managers who are professionals in both management and leadership. Finland's Police University College has developed a new and original management training program – the EMBA in Policing – in cooperation with Tampere University of Technology. This innovative police management training program is based on Quinn's Model of Leadership. The idea of this paper is to introduce the EMBA in Policing program as a new way to train future police leaders and to...
