Electromagnetic Interference in the Railway Spot Communication Systems
A review generally to inform of the European Railway Traffic Management System (ERTMS) with a background on the electromagnetic environment, electromagnetic interference in the railway track, type of sources that could cause the electromagnetic interference to other electrical and electronic system or equivalent, and some ways on preventing the electromagnetic interference in the railway track. Electromagnetic interference occurrence on the railway track has been given a severe attention. Interferences that cause several threat to the communication system such as telephone, television, radio and other communication equipment is actually due to the electromagnetic radiation from several sources in the railway itself. Source and effect of the electromagnetic interference that occurred in the railway track are discussed.

This paper presents a susceptibility study of an IEEE 802.11n communication network in an electromagnetic (EM) environment representative of the railway EM environment, which is characterized by the presence of transient EM interferences induced by the sliding contact between the pantograph and the catenary. In Europe, the ground-train communications are currently carried out by the GSM-R communication system, but the next generation of ground-train radio which could be based on OFDM solutions is already discussed. Then, we worked on the susceptibility of OFDM communication signals to the EM transient interferences which are systematically present in the railway EM environment. To achieve this susceptibility analysis, we select an IEEE 802.11n communication network and we analyzed its performances in the presence of transient EM interferences. The transient interferences present in the railway environment, were characterized in the literature as signals of short duration, variable p...

For reliability and safety purposes, the signaling systems in the railway domain are continuously evolving. Today, in Europe, the GSM-R is used as a part of the European Railway Traffic Management System (ERTMS) and the transmission of signaling information is increasingly ensured by the GSM-R. With the evolution of the telecommunication systems, new technologies using OFDM techniques, such as LTE could be exploited for railway applications. However, knowing that the railway electromagnetic environment is very hostile and rich in terms of electromagnetic interferences, studies need to be carried out to anticipate the EMC issues that could impact LTE performances. In this paper, we propose a comparative study between GSM-R and LTE communications in the presence of transient electromagnetic interferences, generally present on board trains.

As many other industrial environments, the railway electromagnetic environment is characterized by a large number of electromagnetic signals and disturbances. Among these, transient signals, with high energy level and wide frequency spectrum, represent an important threat to different signaling subsystems. In this paper, a new methodology dedicated to the detection and the characterization of the transient disturbances is presented. Based on a flexible and adjustable time-frequency analysis, this methodology is used to evaluate the impact of transient disturbances on a ground-to-train radio communication. A test bench was developed in order to validate the results of this evaluation.
Modeling and analysis of railway GMSK reception vulnerability to electromagnetic interference
World Academy of Research in Science and Engineering
In this paper, we investigate the impact of electromagnetic interference (EMI) on the quality of a Global System for Mobile communications - Railways (GSM-R) ground to train radio link. Scenarios of radiated electromagnetic (EM) disturbances applied to a Gaussian minimum shift keying (GMSK) based receiver, potentially impairing the communication quality are assessed. The objective is to establish a link between the disturbance characteristics of the interference and the received communication quality; the physical layer is considered. A GSM-R communication chain is modeled. Radiated EMI perturbations are injected to study, at the receiver, the bit error rate (BER). The signal plus interference characteristics are analyzed to detect the interference. In a second step, this work will be used to identify suitable criteria to implement an automatic EMI detection and identification system.
Evaluating Electromagnetic Railway Environment Using adaptive Time-Frequency Analysis
2016
With the current introduction of new technologies in railway signaling, the railway electromagnetic environment is becoming more and more complex. Indeed, the characteristics of the signals used in these systems are very different both in time and frequency domains. Because of this wide range of very different signals to evaluate, time-frequency representations already used in electromagnetic compatibility studies, do not perfectly enable us to easily and quickly process, with a sufficient flexibility, these signals. In this letter, these methods are briefly recalled and discussed. Some limits regarding their use in the electromagnetic environment analysis considered are identified and a more flexible time-frequency analysis method is proposed. By applying it to synthesized and recorded signals, we show that time and frequency resolutions are easily adapted to fit the particular considered subsystem and adjusted according to the disturbance or radio communication signal to examine

In rapidly growing countries like India train transportation is majorly used due to the cost effective solution of transportation. The train transportation depends on the rails or tracks. If there is break or crack or any other fault present over the track it creates a serious problem.. Railways track failure is big issue and to recognize the failure before the train travels on the same track is under development using Voltage Standing Wave Ratio technique. Project laid on development system for processing VSWR (Voltage standing wave ratio) signals received from VSWR meter. In the wireless transmission system the reflected power and voltage standing wave ratio figures are having importance related to its best performance.. These waves can be captured using VSWR meter/through line power meters and makes its online analysis. The electronic system is used to capture and further processing of signals. The proposed system in this paper is used to rectify all these problems. Typically thi...
