The research aims to find out the effect of Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) on students’ descriptive writing achievement of the 2016/2017 tenth year students of SMK Swasta Melati. The problems that had been identified by the researchers are including that students were not interested in learning English especially in writing. This research uses descriptive writing in written test. CONTEXTUAL TEACHING AND LEARNING APPROACH TO TEACHING WRITING

This article reports a study on the implementation of contextual teaching and learning approach to teaching English writing to second graders of a Junior High Shool in Bandung. The study aims to investigate the strategies of Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) (as adapted from Crawford, 2001) and the advantages of using CTL approach. The study employed a qualitative case study research design. The data were obtained from several instruments, namely class observations, students' interview and students' writing products which were then analyzed using writing assessment criteria taken from Rose (2007, as cited by Emilia, 2011. The findings revealed that the teaching writing program was successful to improve students' recount writing skill. Specifically, they showed some improvement on schematic structure, grammar roles, and graphic features. Moreover, the data from observation, interview, and documentation of students' text showed some benefits of CTL. These include: (1) engaging students in the writing activity; (2) increasing students' motivation to participate actively in the writing class; (3) helping students to construct their writing; (4) helping students to solve their problems; (5) providing ways for students to discuss or interact with their friends; and (6) helping the students to summarize and reflect the lesson. Based on these findings, it is recommended that CTL be implemented in teaching writing.
The Impact of Using Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) in Arabic Essay Writing Classes

The aim of this study is to examine the effect of contextual teaching and learning approach of the Arabic essay writing skills students of Education Arabic Department Faculty of Language and Arts State University of Jakarta. The research was conducted during the second semester in the 2015/2016 academic year starting from February up June in 2016. The study design used Elliot's procedure, which comprised seven phases, namely: (a) identifying the initial ideas, (b) finding and analyzing the facts, (c) general planning, (d) Implementing, (e) observing, (f) evaluating, and (g) revising. The data were taken by observation, interview, daily note, and test. The results of the study found that the mean of the pre-test was 65,30, the average score results of the test at the first cycle were 73,25, the average score of the test at the second cycle was 77,40, and the average score of the test at third cycle was 84.1. It concluded that the contextual teaching and learning approach could improve the student's skill in Arabic essay writing.
In Globalization era, English becomes one of the crucial subjects to be taught. Generally, it is taught from the Elementary schools level to university levels. To be a creative and innovative teacher are important things to develop students' ability because English is a foreign language. One of the method is to use CTL in teaching and Learning. The objective of this study is to find out about teaching and learning writing using contextual teaching and Learning (CTL) in the second year at SD N 3 Barenglor. The writer observed and made interview to the teacher and students to get data and the process of teaching and Learning using CTL. The object of this study involved 30 students; consist of 13 male students (boys) and 17 female 17 students (girls). The results show that CTL is used in teaching and Learning in SD N 3 Barenglor and CTL had succesfully improved the motivation of the students to study English. Abstrak Dalam era Globalisasi, bahasa Inggris menjadi salah satu mata pelajaran penting yang harus diajarkan. Umumnya, bahasa inggris diajarkan dari tingkat sekolah dasar sampai tingkat universitas. Menjadi guru yang kreatif dan inovatif adalah hal yang penting untuk mengembangkan kemampuan siswa karena bahasa Inggris adalah bahasa asing. Salah satu metode yang digunakan untuk mencapai tujuan tersebut adalah dengan menggunakan CTL dalam pengajaran dan pembelajaran. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui tentang pengajaran dan pembelajaran writing dengan menggunakan CTL (pengajaran dan pembelajaran secara kontekstual dan) pada siswa kelas dua SD N 3 Barenglor. Penulis mengamati dan melakukan wawancara kepada guru dan siswa untuk mendapatkan data tentang proses pengajaran dan pembelajaran menggunakan CTL. Objek penelitian ini melibatkan 30 siswa; terdiri dari 13 siswa laki-laki dan 17 siswa perempuan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa CTL digunakan dalam pengajaran dan pembelajaran di SD N 3 Barenglor dan CTL telah berhasil meningkatkan motivasi siswa untuk belajar bahasa Inggris.
The objectives of this study were to describe the application of Contextual Teaching and Learning and to find out the result of applying Contextual Teaching and Learning in teaching writing to the second grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah 2 Yogyakarta (Adiwiyata Junior High School). This research was a classroom action research which consisted of two cycles. Each cycle consisted of four steps; they were planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The researcher used the observation, interview and video recording in completing the research. The analysis result showed that the researcher could make the meaningful material, encourage students to be active, focus students’ attention and curiosity by questioning, demonstrate what she wanted the students to learn, and do reflection by giving appreciation, motivation, and suggestion. The students also reflected Contextual Teaching and Learning indications such as relating the lesson with their Adiwiyata activities, learning collaboratively, becoming self-regulated, critical thinking, and applying the lesson in their Adiwiyata activities. Applying Contextual Teaching and Learning in teaching writing could enhance the students’ writing and make them aware to participate in Adiwiyata activities. This research used a quasi-experimental design. The population was grade VIII students of SMP XX Yogyakarta that consisted of four classes. The sample consisted of three classes, namely class 8A using CTL approach and class 8B using the scientific approach as the experimental groups, while class 8D used the conventional approach as the control group. The instruments used were tests in the form of writing composition. The hypotheses testing were analyzed using ANCOVA test. The results are (1) there are significant differences in writing achievement among the students taught by using the scientific approach, CTL approach, and conventional approach. (2) The use of the scientific approach and the CTL approach are more effective than that of the conventional approach in teaching writing. (3) The use of the scientific approach is not more effective than that of the CTL approach in teaching writing.

The objective of this research is to improve the writing ability of grade VIII through contextualization at SMP N 2 Moyudan. Contextualization means to teach language in a context or to provide a context for language teaching to the language teaching and learning process connected with real life. The study aimed to describe developmont of CTL-based reading materials for junior high school students. The product of this research was a reading material of procedure text-based on CTL summarized in a booklet (textbooks) which are valid and practical. The Instructional design used R and D development model proposed by Plomp consisting of three steps: preliminary research, prototyping, and assessment phase. The results showed that CTL-based reading materials were very valid in terms of presentation, content feasibility, language accuracy, and display. Furthermore, the value of CTL-based teaching materials practicality reached very practical in terms of presentation, ease of use, readability, and the time spent in studying the reading materials. Based on the analysis and discussion, it was concluded that the developed CTL-based reading material is feasible to be used to help students improve their reading skills, especially in learning to read procedure texts. This reading material is expected to improve students' motivation, interest, and reading skill, as well as overcome the limitations of learning resources in the learning activities of reading procedure text.
