Determinants of Bank Cost Efficiency: Empirical Evidence from Bangladesh
2020
Due to the trust of depositors, banks should be responsible for efficient utilization of resources to achieve cost efficiency (CE) which in turn contributes to raising income. Previous studies found that the average CE of banks in Bangladesh was around 80%. This study aims to find the determinants of CE in Bangladesh from a sample of 33 banks during a period from 2009 to 2016. Stochastic Frontier Approach (SFA) was used to measure CE in the first stage. In the second stage, different types of regression estimations were used like pooled ordinary least square, fixed effect or random effect panel regression, System-Dynamic Panel Data Estimation and Arellano-Bond Dynamic Panel Data Estimation for comparison. The results showed that Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) specifically the ArellanoBond Dynamic Panel Data Estimation was best suited for problems of The International Journal of Banking and Finance, Vol. 15. This paper aims to find out the significant firm-specific and macroeconomic determinants of operating efficiency through covering 360 observations having 30 commercial banks’ data from 2009 to 2020. Model specification test along with several diagnostic tests has been done and our investigation reveals that Net interest margin or net investment income ratio, loan loss provision to total loan, debt to total assets and total loan to earning assets are significantly related with operating efficiency ratio (OER) bringing the changes in operating efficiency. In the second model, return on equity, net interest margin or net investment income ratio, equity capital to total assets, loan loss provision to total loan, bank size, total loan to earning assets and total loan to total deposit significantly affect the operating efficiency of commercial banks being measured with cost efficiency ratio (CER). In the subsequent model, net interest margin or net investment income ratio, total loan to e...
Determinants of Commercial Banks’ Efficiency in Bangladesh: Does Crisis Matter?
The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Business, 2017
Banks play a crucial role in bringing stability and economic development through their expected contribution in proper financial resource mobilisation across the economy. Despite the importance, there is little focus in recent literature which provided the empirical evidence how the global financial crisis affect the bank efficiency in Bangladesh. Thus, this paper aims to examine the effect of the global financial crisis and other factors on the efficiency of Bangladesh commercial banks. By employing the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) method, we computed the technical efficiency of individual banks operating in the Bangladesh banking sector during 2000 to 2013. The empirical findings indicate that the Bangladesh banking sector has exhibited the highest efficiency level during 2001, while efficiency seems to be at the lowest level during 2010. The study finds that crisis along with bank size, capital adequacy ratio, return on average equity and real interest rate have a significant effect on bank efficiency in Bangladesh. In order to keep the sound financial development of Bangladesh, banks operating in the Bangladesh banking sector have to consider all the potential technologies which could improve their profit efficiency levels, since the main motive of banks is to maximise shareholders' value or wealth through profit maximisation.
Predicting the Efficiency of Commercial Banks in Bangladesh
2021
This paper examines the efficiency of the thirty-six commercial banks (27 Domestic and 9 Foreign Banks) by reviewing Literature and analyzing 6 years (2011-2016) data. The sample was selected based on the availability of data. It is assumed that the banking sector complies with the variable returns to scale (VRS) approach which means the output of a bank is not proportionately related to its inputs. Therefore, VRS in the ‘Data Envelop Analysis (DEA)’ technique has been employed in this paper. The findings reveal that most (30 banks out of 36 banks) of the banks of Bangladesh are inefficient in terms of technical, allocative, and scale efficiency during the 2011-2016 periods. Conversely, only six banks (4 domestic banks and 2 foreign banks) were found efficient in overall scores in this scrutinization. The recent economic and financial situations of Bangladesh have an impact on the banking system, raising a question about bank’s operational efficiency. Moreover, Bank’s operational efficiency is getting emphasized in the competitive financial market to satisfy both shareholders and depositor. The present study has assessed the impact of liquidity and profitability on the operational efficiency of scheduled commercial banks of Bangladesh over the period from 2011 to 2016. The study has used secondary data of 30 scheduled commercial banks of Bangladesh. The quantitative research has employed panel data approach using various models like Fixed Effect Regression model with ClusterStandard Errors and Drisc/Kraay Standard Errors models, Feasible Generalized Least Square Model and Panel Correlated Standard Error Model to provide the robust result. The study reveals that liquidity and profitability combined explain about 66.23% and 98.85% of the bank’s operational efficiency under Fixed Ef...
The Relationship Between Efficiency , Capital and Risk from the Banking Activity Perspective
2018
In a previous research we analysed the risk-performance correlation at two banks in Romania by the quantification of the influence of the indicators of the banking risks on the banking performance indicator – financial profitability rate. Within this article, we propose to expand the research and identify the possible correlations between the levels of the efficiency, capital and banking risk on a sample of 11 representative banks of Romania. Surprisingly, there is a limited number of studies which evaluate the inter-temporal relations between the banking risk, capital and efficiency. The recent financial crisis underlined the need of a subsequent understanding of the determinants of the banking risk in an increased banking efficiency and decreased banking capital environment. For the study of the risk-efficiency-capital study we will estimate a panel model in Eviews. The panel data models consist in the estimation of regression equation in which one uses time series for the evoluti...
Modeling the Relationship between Bank Efficiency, Capital and Risk in Albanian Banking System
Procedia Economics and Finance, 2016
Bank efficiency is considered to be very important in the relationship between risk and capital. It affects both capital and risk and it is seen as one of the factors that determine them. On the other side, capital regulation and risk-taking behaviour influenced by it have an impact on efficiency. This paper gives an overview of theoretical and empirical studies that are going to be used on modelling the relationship between efficiency, capital and risk-taking behaviour of commercial banks operating in Albania during the period 2002-2014. Based on previous works worldwide, a three stage model is found to be a proper one for such analysis about Albanian banking system. According to this model: first, the regression of efficiency and variables indicating risk and capital has to be analysed, second capital will be regressed against variables indicating efficiency and risk and in the third stage risk-taking will be regressed against variables indicating efficiency and capital. Based on previous studies related to this issue there are findings of a positive trade off between inefficiency and bank risk-taking (such as US evidences) and also negative one (such as European banks that seem to hold more capital and take on less risk in case of inefficiency). Defined independent factors of efficiency, capital and risk-taking are going to be used on an empirical study, subject of prospective research. To my knowledge there is no previous study on this issue for Albanian banking system. This model enables testing of different hypotheses about risk, capital, efficiency and relationship between them. It is going to respond to the effects that reduction in cost efficiencies might have on future risks of Albanian commercial banks. Furthermore, this model gives the possibility to test the bad management hypothesis and efficiency version of moral hazard hypotheses for targeted banks and banking system. It also responds to the questions whether bank cost efficiency makes the foundation of banks' capital position and risk-taking and also whether there is an evidence of relationships between capital and risk-taking in line with moral hazard hypothesis.
The efficiency of commercial banks in Bangladesh: a non-parametric analysis
Quarterly Journal of Regional …, 2011
Bangladesh using data envelopment analysis. The data consist of accounting figures of 43 banks on 2003. On average, the technical efficiency score of banks in the sample is 84 percent (incomebased model) and 80 percent (user-cost model), which is consistent with results from a parametric approach call parametric linear programming. The market share (proxy by share of total loans) is positively and significantly influence on technical efficiency. However, the evidence on relationship between foreign ownership on bank efficiency is not significant for the income-based model.
Does Risk Management affect on Bank Efficiency? An Analysis of Sri Lankan Banking Sector
International Journal of Management and Sustainability, 2013
Increasing competition in the finance sector in Sri Lank has created a huge competition among the banking sector. The high level of competition improved the bank efficiency and efficiency creates risk to the banks. Therefore, risk management is a vital in achieving efficiency. Therefore, this study addresses the question on “whether the Sri Lankan banks are efficient and how risk management improves the banks’ efficiency?. The main objective of the study was to identify the efficiency of the banks by incorporating risk factors. This study adopted second Stage Data Envelopment Analysis based on Licensed Domestic Commercial Banks in Sri Lanka for the period from 2005 to 2011. At the first stage it use DEA to finds the efficiency scores by incorporating risk factors such as Credit, Market and Operational risk. In the second stage it applies Tobit regression to find the influence of external environment factors on bank efficiency. The mean efficiency of Sri Lankan banks is high when it ...
