This paper aims to trace the genealogy of the Kiai Ṣāliḥ Darat in the field of falak sciences and the approach he used in uniting the differences in the initial determination of Ramadan in Semarang. This study is important, considering Kiai Ṣāliḥ Darat is more an expert in the field of Sufism. On the other hand, Kiai Ṣāliḥ Darat was also positioned as an early generation Falak Indonesian expert (salaf). This paper includes a historical study that conducts critical analysis of data that has been isolated from various literatures. The results of the study showed that the expertise of Kiai Ṣāliḥ Darat in the field of falak knowledge was obtained when conducting scientific jouney for Semarang scholars to al-Haramayn scholars. Kiai Ṣāliḥ Darat initiated a deliberation to determine the beginning of the month of Ramadan. This discussion involved ulama, astronomer, habaib and umara in Kauman Mosque in Semarang. The idea of deliberation is aimed at eliminating differences in society in deter...
The Role of Modern Observation in Understanding the Beginning of the Hijri Month
jurnal falak
This study aims to observe the determination of the beginning of the Hijri month in the implementation of Islamic holidays and contribute to modern society. The implementation of this research uses phenomenological methods and scientific approach methods, where both methods will combine several conjunction theories that occur with the results of observations. The Ministry of Religion of the Republic of Indonesia made observations with several criteria used from observations in 1970 with the height of the new moon 2°, the elongation distance between the moon and the sun reaching 3° is the distance between the moon and the sun. The age of the sun and moon when it reaches 8 hours from ijtima. The results found are that for now, with light pollution, the new moon, an object, cannot reach a height of < 2° because the parameter in determining the image of the crescent moon is the object in the form of a thin and dim line. It is concluded that the observation of the new moon with a height of < 2° could not observe, either by using tools or with the naked eye. So science is the solution to understand the theory and implementation of determining the beginning of the Hijri month.
Analysis of the Early Determination of the Kamariah Month Perspectives of Fiqh and Astronomy
Astroislamica: Journal of Islamic Astronomy
The initial determination of the lunar month in Indonesia is carried out by the Ministry of Religion of the Republic of Indonesia as a government representative, with the criteria currently used being a minimum of 2o height of the new moon, 3o of elongation and 8 hours of the new moon's age. Astronomers doubt the results of the sighting without visuals from the new moon, especially when the new moon is too low, while jurists hold on to the testimony of the explorer even though there are no visual results. One of the supporting factors for the visibility of the new moon is the weather. Therefore the author formulates the problem, namely how to determine the beginning of the lunar month according to the Indonesian Ministry of Religion and analysis according to fiqh and astronomy with the study of the Decree of the Minister of Religion (KMA) regarding the determination of the beginning of Ramadan, Shawwal and Zulhijah 1435 H/ 2014 M – 1440 H/ 2019 M. This research includes a qualit...
ULUL ALBAB Jurnal Studi Islam
This article was motivated by the fact that most observers in Indonesia are inconsistent in determining the theoretical and practical beginning of the Hijri month. They only consider the aspect of the height of hilâl, but ignore the angle of elongation during the process of observing hilâl. This inconsistency occurs in the theory and practice reflected in the Decision of the Ministry of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia. Based on this case, the authors want to analyze the decision, especially the data on the testimony stating that the new moon (hilâl) can be successfully seen, as received from 1962 - 2021 M. The type of research used is qualitative and descriptive using the data analysis technique adapted from the Millis and Huberman theory to obtain the data classification of that decision by using the scientific cum doctrine approach. The results of this study are first; the number of ithbât maṣlaḥî reached 45% and ithbât takâmulî reached 55% of all decrees of the Min...
Menguji Kembali Pemikiran Yusuf Al-Qardawi dalam Penentuan Awal Bulan Hijriah
2020
This study explores and criticizes the views of Yusuf al-Qardhawi in determining the beginning of the Islamic month. Based on several valid hadiths, Yusuf al-Qaradawi is of the view that the determination of the beginning of the Hijri month can be carried out by three methods, namely rukyat (observation), hisab (astronomical calculations), and istikmal. Therefore, the fundamental question that will be examined in this paper is how is Yusuf al-Qaradawi's view when clarified by the study of hadith and astronomical studies? The main source for Muslims in understanding Islamic teachings is the Koran and Hadith. For Muslims, the Hadith second ranks after the Koran. Throughout Islamic history, hadith is a source of controversy in Islamic law. Among the problems that are still warm and almost always occur today is an understanding of the observations of the crescent related to the determination of the beginning of the Islamic month. Questioning about the differences in determining the ...

There are various methods used to determine the arrival of Ramadan (fasting) and Syawal in South East Asia. Malaysia and Indonesia use the rukyah (sighting of the moon) and hisab (mathematical calculations), Singapore uses the hisab while Brunei only uses the rukyah method. These differences are due to the different basis for using a certain method to determine the arrival of Ramadan and Syawal. The basis here refers to religious references and forms of istidlal (inferences). The question is, what religious references are used to substantiate the adoption of the rukyah method in Brunei? What is their form of istidlal based on the religious references? To answer all these questions this study has two objectives. Firstly, it intends to determine the religious references that act as the basis for using the rukyah method in Brunei. Secondly, to analyse the different forms of istidlal based on the religious references. In order to achieve these objectives, this qualitative study used library research and expert interview methods for collecting data. All the data were analysed using the content analysis method. Lastly, this study concluded that religious references from the al-Qur'an and Hadith used as a basis for applying the rukyah method in Brunei is similar to the religious references used as a basis for applying rukyah and hisab in other South East Asian countries. The only difference is the various forms of istidlal.
WHY NOT CONSIDER RU'YATUL BIL 'ILM: A Report from the Center for Islamic Studies, Indonesia 1
2006
We have been following the controversy and the debate over ISNA’s decision on August 13, 2006 regarding using the astronomical calculation to replace the moon sighting method in marking the beginning of our holy month of Ramadan. In Jakarta, Indonesia, we have to face similar problems annually when it comes to the decision to start and to end the holy month of Ramadan and Dhulhijjah. Indonesian Muslims have long been experiencing the split between the proponents of astronomical calculation on the one end, and moon sighting on the other. Fortunately though, the split has not created any disharmony in our religious affairs nor in our daily social lives in spite of the fact that this has been going on for, as far as we can recall, more than 40 years. Most traditional Muslim brothers and sisters normally follow the moon-sighting method supported by the largest Muslim organization (Nahdatul Ulama with as many as 30 million members) in the country, whilst the second largest Muslim organiz...
Religious symbol on determining the beginning and end of Ramadan in Indonesia
HTS Teologiese Studies/Theological Studies, 2021
The fasting and Eid al-Fitr celebration has a strong public dimension for their traditional characteristics in Islamic communal celebrations. This study used field research from interviews with the two largest mass organisations in Indonesia, Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) and Muhammadiyah, and the statements of mass media. This research shows that contestation of religious symbols is not something that needs to be debated but it should broaden the understanding of the differences that must be respected in order to build brotherhood not, division. Contestation of religious symbols between the hisab [astronomical calculations] and the ru’yat [sighting a new crescent moon] is a competition between religious organisations, to strengthen their position, social legitimacy and religious authority in the public sphere. The government has to take the initiative to compromise the policy between the two Islamic organisations to reach a methodological agreement in order to minimise social tensions. Cont...
