The learning environment as a predictor of higher order thinking skills

The learning environment is one of the elements that will influence higher-order thinking skills (HOTS). The purpose of this study was to test the influence of the learning environment on HOTS. The researcher selected 82 forms two students from two secondary schools in Kuala Nerus, Terengganu, Malaysia, as the study sample. The researcher has adopted a set of questionnaires that have been developed by previous researchers and a questionnaire developed by the researcher himself. Multiple regression analysis has found that material environment and cooperation between students’ constructs are predictors of HOTS. In 2009, Malaysia decided to take part in Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) for the first time. PISA is an international survey that is conducted by Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) which aims to provide information regarding performances in education across countries, particularly in Reading, Mathematics and Science through a special assessment. PISA is conducted every three years for groups of 15-year-olds in both OECD and non-OECD countries. Unfortunately, Malaysia showed poor performance in PISA 2009, as it was ranked the bottom third in the overall ranking. This indicates that Malaysian secondary education students are lacking in terms of higher order thinking skills (HOTS). The outcome of PISA 2009 has left a significant impact to Malaysia Ministry of Education (MOE) in improving the current national education system. In 2011, the MOE has launched Malaysia Education Blueprint which put greater emphasis on HOTS. This concept paper utilizes literature review for data collection. It will specifically discuss (1) various approaches outlined by the MOE in implementing HOTS in secondary education, (2) the ongoing progress as well as (3) the feedbacks from the stakeholders on the implementation of HOTs.

The aim of this study would be to determine the attitude of students in secondary schools towards science and the degree of Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS). High Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) is a student's thinking process at a higher cognitive level from various concepts and methods in the learning taxonomy. HOTS learning can improve student thinking skills at a higher level. Teachers have a very important role in making students skilled in solving problems so that they are required to be able to apply learning that can train students to think at higher levels (HOTS). This study aims to know high order thinking skills of Muhammdiyah Junior High School student in science learning. Participants in this study were 58 students from Muhammadiyah Junior High Schools in Jombang Regency. This study used a descriptive qualitative research with test of LOTS and HOTS. The results of the data show that students are able to work on HOTS questions only up to the analysis, namely C4. However, students are already good at working on C1, C2 and C4 questions with a percentage above 70%, it is high. Students have not been able to think at high levels at stages C5 and C6 because the teacher rarely teaches and asks questions at the application and development.

The study aims to analyze the students' higher order thinking skills (HOTS) in Science subjects at Islamic Elementary School in Salatiga, Indonesia. It is descriptive qualitative research. Using the nonprobability sampling with convenience sampling method, this study involved 120 students as the sample. The data were gathered using tests, questionnaires, Focus Group Discussions (FGD), and documentations. The descriptive analysis with percentile formula was used to analyze the data. The results indicated that the students' HOTS abilities were still at the low level. In Low Order Thinking Skills (LOTS) questions category, the students' ability to answer questions ranged from 0.6 to 0.9 (good). In Middle Order Thinking Skills (MOTS) questions category, the index of the students' abilities was 0.35 to 0.65 (the medium category). In HOTS questions category, the index of the students' abilities was 0.075 to 0.45 (the low category). Therefore, it is necessary to make efforts in improving the HOTS ability of Islamic Elementary School students.
Promoting students' higher order thinking (HOT) is the main aim of all education studies and programs. Past research in science education has indicated that effective teaching strategies play a vital role in improving these skills among students. This study aimed at investigating strategies used by secondary science teachers in science teaching as well as to determine the association between the strategies used and variables such as gender and years of experience. The Strategies Use Survey Questionnaire (SUSQ) was developed and consisted of 31 questions in the form of a 5-point Likert scale and distributed among 212 7th grade science teachers in the Iraqi-Kurdistan region. Data were analyzed by adopting descriptive and inferential statistics such as t-test and one-way ANOVA. Findings of the study indicated that the most popular strategy among 7th grade science teachers is the strategy for acquiring knowledge which focused more on memorizing basic concepts in science, while the least used strategy by science teachers is the strategy for applying knowledge such as problem solving and hands-on activities. Moreover, gender and experience were found to be significant factors for teaching strategies used among study participants (p < 0.05).

Higher order thinking skill (HOTs) is an important skill that must be possessed in the 21st century. Teachers, students’ teacher, and students must have this skill. This study is aimed to describe of HOTs in high school students, physics students’ teacher, and physics teachers. The study was conducted on 25 teachers, 40 student teacher, and 25 students (K11), whom selected randomly in Southern Tangerang, Banten, Indonesia. Instruments used in the form of computer based test (CBT) with content validity index (CVI) = 0,86, validity (0,87), reliability (0,75), difficulty level (0,5), practicality (87,1%), and effectiveness (94,63%), to measure HOTs. The 2013 curriculum is learning curriculum that emphasizes higher-order thinking skills, besides learning activities also by training students with questions based on high-level thinking skills, namely by Trends in International Mathematics and Sciences Study (TIMSS). Higher Order Thinking Skill (HOTS) is an important skill that is focused in the six aspirations for students through Education Development Plan of Malaysia (EDPM) 2013-2025. Preparing students who are able to master HOTS remain the global education challenge due to the importance of this skill in students in order to prepare them with high marketability value in the future. The transformation of students' low order thinking skill towards high order thinking skill will be able to produce students who are rooted nationally but think internationally which will altogether create Malaysia's education system that is equivalent of international education system. Students' mind transformation can be developed through involvement of learning environment elements which are closely related to the application of HOTS in schools. Thus, this concept paper was written to put forward the issues related to learning environment elements that includes teaching and classroom environment in the application of HOTS among students. The discussions in this article takes into consideration the issues focused by Education Development Plan of Malaysia (EDPM) 2013-2025 that emphasizes HOTS among students in order to create marketability and thus contribute towards the success of nation's education and economic aspects.
