Abstract
The article describes the evolution of e-learning from a period of techno-enthusiasm to the collapse of the IT bubble and the present "reasonable doubts" about its growth potential. It pinpoints some reasonable concerns related to first generation e-learning experiences, and it argues that these concerns should be properly managed if e-learning is to become mainstream into education and training.
