Abstract

The vampires, zombies, werewolves, mummies and madmen of the gothic tradition have overrun popular culture. Nowhere is this more clearly seen than on our cinema screens. This course offers a concise yet thorough introduction to gothic cinema, covering key texts and movements from German Expressionism and Universal Horror to homespun Hammer and beyond. It will address key questions related to the complex nature of genre, the role of sexuality and the gothic’s ability to engage with national trauma.
