Abstract
The paper questions the idea that an opposition exists between top-tier public administrators and private service providers in France, and the related notion that the resistance of the major state branches has slowed down the integration of private consultants within the central administration. Based on the case-study of a club that both promotes and makes visible the overlaps and connections between these two groups, the paper sheds light on the role of intermediaries who occupy strategic positions at the junction of the public and the private spheres and facilitate the acclimation within the state of logics, interests, values, interpretive frames and apparatuses that are usually seen as specific to the economic field. The sociology of these intermediaries and the analysis of the relationships between these two groups make it possible to overcome a simplistic opposition between the state and the market and shows how they tend to merge in order to “proselytize” the public sector ...
