CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION This chapter provides a brief description of the whole content of the research.It covers background of the research,research question,purposes of research,scope of the study,significance of the study,and clarification of term. 1.1 Research Background English is purely a foreign and new language for Indonesian People. As one of the International Languages, English has an important role almost in all aspects of life. English has become a compulsory foreign language in Indonesia. It is one of the subjects that is taught since in the elementary school level until university level and examined in the national examination to determine student's graduation. English in Kindergarten (TK) and Elementary school (SD) is widely taught as local content or Extracurricular content. However, English in the Junior High School (SMP) and Senior High School (SMA) or Vocational School (SMK) is taught in more international content. Basically,there are four skills in English language learning:Writing,Listening,Reading, and Speaking. Each skill must be mastered by the learner. Listening is considered as receptive skill, in which people need the ability to receive spoken language.Listening should be learned because it has an important role in facilitating the learner to master the Language. The Students’ Listening Problems For Senior High School in Pematangsiantar

This article describes the English listening problems faced by students in senior high school in Pematangsiantar. Specifically, it reveals (1) students' English listening skills, (2) problems they face in listening to English, and (3) how the teacher solves the problem. This article uses a qualitative descriptive method and is carried out in high school in Pematangsiantar, North Sumatra. the subject of this article through the purposive sampling technique. The data was obtained through a series of English listening tests using recordings with native and non-native speakers, observation, and interviews. The findings show (1) the problems they face in listening to English deal with speaking speed, limited vocabulary, level of concentration, and established language habits, and (3) To overcome this problem, the teacher applies the practice of the right way technique. by giving students several ways to practice listening to English. Thus, it can be concluded that the teacher's efforts are relevant to listening problems faced by students.
Listening Difficulties Faced by the First Semester Students at Basic Listening Class

This study aimed at describing difficulties faced by students in learning Listening. This study involved seventeen female students and eight male students taking Basic Listening course in one of private university in Malang, East Java. To gain the data, the researcher interviewed the subjects one by one. The findings, then, classified into several classes by referring to previous studies discussing listening difficulties in English as Foreign Language (EFL) classes. The findings showed that there were four difficulties faced by the students. They were the speed and length of the spoken text, vocabulary, pronunciation, and accents. Based on the findings, then, the researchers made several suggestions for further researchers and other language teachers to consider this study in their practice.

The purpose of this research was to investigate students’ listening comprehension problems. The researchers used a mixed-method design. The participants were third-semester students of the English Language Education Program at Universitas Katolik Indonesia Santu Paulus Ruteng. In collecting the data, the researchers used two instruments namely survey questionnaires, and semi-structured interviews. The findings of this study revealed that the third-semester students of the English Language Education Study Program perceived some degree of listening comprehension problems. Parsing problems took 50%, utilization problems took 30%, and perception problems took 20% of listening comprehension problems faced by the third-semester students. In addition, the results of the interview revealed that mostly the students experienced listening comprehension problems due to the fast speech rate of the speakers in the recording. This study aims to determine students' problems in learning English, especially in terms of speaking and listening. Basically, the teaching and learning process will run smoothly if students feel comfortable with the learning activities; therefore, this research provides some appropriate suggestions for teachers in overcoming difficulties faced by students. The respondents of this study were junior high school students. This study used a questionnaire as an instrument to determine the extent of students' skills in English. This study also conducted data analysis by analyzing the importance of English in students' views, the difficulties encountered in learning English, and also the teacher's teaching strategies desired by students. This study was aimed at identifying the students' response to the importance of studying listening comprehension, and finding out problems faced by second year students of English Study Program - FKIP UR in listening comprehension. This study was a descriptive research. The population of this research was the second year students of English study program of FKIP-UR. Developing listening skill in a foreign language is an essential part of language learning and teaching process. Listening is a vital skill for the achievement of full mastery of the four language skills in order to enable students to fulfil academic tasks at tertiary level. At the beginning of the article the definition and the professional explanation of listening by famous linguists is cited. Then in the main part, the author explains to the readers the common errors in teaching listening and the reasons of them.
Common Listening Challenges: Indonesian EFL Learners' Perception

Being a major part of internationalizing higher education, teaching English taps particular general cognitive abilities. It is mainly regarding listening that is hypothesized to have a higher influence on acquisition of foreign language. The aim of this study was to identify the common listening challenges experienced by Indonesian EFL learners. This research was practical research using descriptive methods of quantitative research. Subject of the study were subsequently randomly chosen, in which EFL learners at even semesters become the representative. In collecting data, the researchers used a self-structured questionnaire that refers to three primary categories: (1) the listener, (2) the passage, and (3), the physical setting. The data was then statistically evaluated by referring to Likert type scales, to discover useful information. After all, the finding showed that distortions, lexis recognition, phonological awareness, complexity of the passage and the speech rate highlighted a high degree response of common listening challenges. The significance of the study expected to contribute learners with a better understanding and propose new ideas for acceptable teaching listening.

This research entitled “ An Analysis of Students’ Difficulties in Listening: A Case Study at Twelfth Grade Students of MA NW Narmada in Academic Year 2015/2016 ” was aimed at discovering students’ common difficulties in listening and possible causes of those difficulties. This study also focuses on the difficulties in listening part of National Examination. The population of this study was 111 students, cluster random sampling technique was used to select research subject, and the sample was 37 students. In collecting the data, two kinds of instruments were used: test and questionnaire. The test was used to find out the students’ common difficulties in listening part of National Examination, and the questionnaire was used to discover some possible causes of those difficulties.
