THE INFLUENCE OF PRACTICAL WORK IN THE LABORATORY ON THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN PHYSICS IN IDEMILI SOUTH L.G.A

COOUJournal of Educational Research and Development, 2016

Practical work in the laboratory is an inevitable science act that makes the teaching and learning of physics more meaningful, attractive and real, thereby bridging the gap between theory and practice. This paper therefore anchored on the influence of practical work in the laboratory on the academic performance of secondary school physics students in Idemili South Local Government Area. For research questions were structured to guide the research. A descriptive survey design JIIas utilized. A questionnaire consisting of 13 items JIIas employed based on the structured research questions, using simple percentage analysis technique. Finding from the study revealed that physics laboratories in ldemili South Local Government Area (IDSLGA) in Anambra Secondary Schools are inadequate and ill - equipped Afew of physics teachers are trained and qualified but some are inefficient and practical physics is occasionally carried out. Based on the findings, it was recommended that the government should make provision for science laboratories and ensure regular training of physics teachers. Also physics teachers should expose physics students to constant practical work to enhance their understanding and performance.

IMPACT OF LABORATORY FOR EFFECTIVE TEACHING IN LEARNING PHYSICS AMONG SECONDARY SCHOOL IN EKITI-STATE By

The study investigates impact of laboratory for effective teaching in learning physics among secondary schools in Ekiti State. The study is a descriptive research design and the population of the study comprises SS3 students and teachers in randomly selected schools in Ekiti State. The findings of the study are discussed based on the tested hypotheses. The descriptive analysis of the study revealed that most students were not apprehensive of physics because of its calculation aspect and its practical abstract nature since they did see its relevance to their everyday life. It was also indicated that teacher-student interaction really helps in creating students' likeness to the subject. Also, it was revealed that physics practical promote students' performance in the subject since it helps them to understand the subject very well. It was also shown in the research that physics practical examination is tedious than physics theory examination since it equip students with knowledge on new discovery and it help teachers to teach the theory aspect very well. Lastly, the descriptive analysis indicated that school environment of the sampled students are well conducive for teaching and learning of physics since students are well motivated.

Teachers' Characteristics and Availability of Laboratory as Predictors of Senior School Students' Performance in Physics in Ilorin, Nigeria

2018

Introduction Science consists of the formulation and testing of hypotheses based on observational evidences; experiments are important where applicable, but their major function is to simplify observation by imposing controlled conditions. The National Policy on Education (FRN, 2013) pays special attention to science education; one of the stated objectives of science education is to inculcate the spirit of inquiry and scientific thinking in students. The national policy on education also put special importance on the study of Deleted science and technology. The role of science in the development of any nation cannot be over emphasized. Nigeria has also endeavored to raise the standard of science teaching through curriculum development. Omosewo (2012) asserted that science teaching commenced around 1859 in Nigerian secondary schools. It started with the teaching of nature study and later expanded to the three separate sciences, (Physics, Chemistry, and Biology). The Ministries of Edu...

The Analysis of Effectiveness of Laboratory Use Toward Physics Learning Result

Unnes Science Education Journal, 2018

Curriculum 2013 demands physics teachers to use laboratory in supporting the teaching and learning process at school, through laboratory students can apply the theory of physics concretely. The purpose of this study is to find out the effectiveness of laboratory in physics subject at senior high schools in Banda Aceh. This study used descriptive quantitative approach with surveying method. The population of this study is all senior high schools in Banda Aceh and the sample is 6 schools, 140 students and 6 teachers and laboratory chief, the sample was chosen using random stratified disproportionate sampling technique which was categorized based on the school accreditation. The technique used in data collection was questionnaire and observation sheet. The data analysis was done using descriptive technique with percentage formula. The result shows that the effectiveness of the use of laboratory toward physics subject learning at senior highschools in Banda Aceh is in the category less ...

The effect of the Availability and Utilization of Laboratory Apparatus in the Teaching of Physics: A Case Study of Secondary Schools in Karu LGA, Nigeria

The study examined the impact of the availability and effective utilization of instructional materials such as basic laboratory apparatus on the attitude of learners towards Physics and their sustained interest while offering the subject. Five students and one Teacher from each of the ten randomly selected senior secondary schools in Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State were used for the study. Data collected through the use of questionnaires from both the Teachers and the Students were analysed using percentages. The results show that the greatest hindrance to the effective teaching of Physics in these schools is not lack of the necessary laboratory apparatus and equipment but rather lack of their usage. It was also established that effective utilization of these materials have positive influence on the students’ attitude towards Physics which could indirectly affect their academic achievement in the subject.

THE EFFECT OF LABORATORY WORKS IN TEACHING AND LEARNING OF PHYSICS IN ONITSHA NORTH, ANAMBRA STATE

What are the states of physics laboratories in secondary schools? Are there laboratory factors constituting constraints to effective teaching and learning of physics? Does laboratory works influence students' physics achievements and general attitudes? To seek answers to these questions is the aim of the present research. Along the line of survey research method, structured questionnaire were administered to the teachers and students of physics in 10 secondary schools sampled from 16 Government Secondary schools in Onitsha North Local Government Area of Anambra State. The instrument used for collecting data were analyzed using a simple mean due to the conformity of the question and appropriate decision on the result based on the mean was achieved through a comparison with the theoretical cutoff mean calculated as X c = 2.5. The result of the analysis showed inability of the students to explore diverse areas of physics as a result of insufficient supply of laboratory equipments and unsatisfactory teaching and learning due to obsolete nature of available materials. These causes lack of motivation for teaching and learning of physics. However, students with a bank of variety of practical experiences are likely to perform better in skills and confidence than those with limited experience.

Effects of Practical Physics Knowledge on Students' Academic Achievement: A Study of Pankshin Local Government Area of Plateau State, Nigeria

World Educators Forum, 2013

The work investigated the effects of practical Physics knowledge on academic achievement in Physics as a school subject. The research was carried out at Pankshin Local Government Area of Plateau State, Nigeria and the design employed was the pure experimental design. Sixty (60) Senior Secondary School (SSS) II students from three (3) Secondary Schools in Pankshin Local Government Area of Plateau State, Nigeria were tested using a 20-item Physics Achievement Test (PhysAT) whose reliability was 0.70. The t-test statistic was used to test the hypotheses formulated for the study. The analyses revealed that students exposed to practical Physics knowledge achieved higher in Physics (X = 61.5) than students who were not exposed to practical Physics knowledge (X = 50.5). Furthermore, there was no significant difference in the mean PhysAT scores of male (X = 62.33) and female (X = 59.33) students exposed to practical Physics knowledge.

Challenges Facing Laboratory Practical Approach in Physics Instruction in Kenyan District Secondary Schools

2015

Over the years, the Kenya National Examination Council’s (KNEC) secondary school Newsletters have repeatedly pointed out that students need to be exposed to more and more laboratory practical activities in all sciences throughout their secondary school period in order to realize good performance. As such this study aimed at establishing the challenges facing laboratory practical approach in Physics instruction, in the district category of schools in Kenya; in that the newsletters have further shown that most schools in this category perform way below average in Physics examinations. The study was based on constructivist experiential learning theories which explain learning as being constructed through tangible activities. In secondary school Physics instruction these theories focus on laboratory practical activities. The findings of the study provide a bearing on how best to overcome the challenges.
