A Deepening and Strengthening of Grace for a Lively Celebration of Faith: The Filipino Experience

Journal for The Study of Religions and Ideologies, 2019

In this article, I proposed a framework as a means of catechesis in the light of current realities facing Filipino Catholics. In the sacrament of confirmation, those confirmed are called to a full commitment to the gospel lifestyle since it is the completion of the Holy Spirit's gift begun in baptism, characterized by taking on the task of witnessing, even if it entails "sacrifice in the Spirit." To become effective witnesses to the gospel, Christians should develop personal knowledge, awareness, and experience of Christ. In the Philippines, both PCP II (para. 16) and NNCDP (para. 326) claim that many Catholics are “exteriorly” sacramentalized but never adequately catechized. This scenario sparked within me to investigate the situation with the goal of coming up with a modest framework aimed at helping Religion Teachers, Catechists, and Church personnel to instruct confirmands and the confirmed to a lively celebration of faith. This article utilized the exploratory res...

Theology in Context: A Case Study in the Philippines

This study reviews many of the aspects of the Folk Catholicism that is practiced in the Philippines in light of biblical revelation. What does the Bible say about things like God's providence and God's power? What the Bible say about the Virgin Mary, the saints, multitudes of other spirits and the ancestors? What does the Bible say about town fiestas, religious processions, offerings to spirits, amulets and talismans, going to the gravesite on All-Saints' Day and a multitude of other issues. What does a culturally sensitive, biblically authentic, contextual theology look like? Keywords: Animism, theology, folk religion, primal religion, traditional religious values, theology, culture, Philippines, Filipinos, missions in the Philippines, Pentecostal, Folk Catholicism.

To promote the expiation of sins committed on earth, pious donations were common; the chaplaincy was the more common religious foundation, which was intended to secure in perpetuity a number of votes for the eternal repose of the soul of the patron or patrons. To ensure its continued maintenance, material goods were provided; these goods, together with the owner, are generally exhibited in their funerary chapels. Because of the Manila Galleon, which led to the exchange of Asian goods between East and West, it is thus very common to find works from Asia, China, Japan, and the Philippines in the decor of these funerary chapels.

Death and Food Offering: The Ilocano “Atang” Ritual from a Contextual Theology

Recoletos Multidisciplinary Research Journal, 2020

Atang (food offering) is an indigenous ritual for the dead in the Northern Philippines. The atang ritual is thought to be a part of the cultural and religious contexts of the Ilocano people. This research argued that the Ilocanos' practice of atang ritual is compatible with the Catholic Doctrine on the Communion of Saints. This study utilized descriptive and contextual approaches in doing inculturation. It used the purposive sampling technique to Ilocano participants and discussed the development of doing a local theology of atang ritual in the faith of Ilocano Catholics. Results of the study revealed that the atang ritual has significant implications in the faith of the Ilocano Catholics in terms of the importance of remembering the dead as way to elaborate the doctrine of the communion of Saints. Thus, the concept of the communion of saints can be understood in the context of food offering for the dead.

Immaculate Conception Major Seminary - Graduate School of Theology (Academic Office Archive), 2018

This paper tackles the previous "Lakbay-Aral" (Learning Journey), an annual Church cultural heritage exposure held by the Graduate School of Theology of the Immaculate Conception Major Seminary, Guiguinto, Bulacan to various local churches in the Philippines. In 2018, the ICMAS-GST community went to the Archdiocese of Cebufor its "Lakbay-Aral" and this served as this author's official entry for the theological reflections made as a requirement for the exposure course. Though, not published, this is available at the theologate's academic archive. This theological reflection concerns the value of cultural heritage in a local heritage location such as the Archdiocese of Cebu in the Philippines and how its lessons improve the quality of priestly faith among the Catholics in the area.
