Which travel risks are more salient for destination choice? An examination of the tourist’s decision-making process

Journal of Destination Marketing & Management, 2020

The paper examines which travel risks are more salient for tourists' destination choice. We develop and test an integrated travel decision risk typology with survey data from 835 potential tourists. Specifically, we explore the interplay of risk types, tourist attributes and destination characteristics. We examine if travel risks linked to nature, health, terrorism, criminality, political instability are more salient for tourists' destination choice-and how risk perceptions influence tourist's in the key stages of the decision-making process. Results offer an important baseline for future studies in the post-COVID-19 phase. First, our integrated travel decision risk typology distinguishes between sociodemographic, psychological and travel-related factors. We show that past travel experience shapes risk perceptions and impacts tourists' future destination choice. Second, we reveal that natural disasters are not the key barrier in the early decisionmaking stage of the destination choice process. Third, we identify tourist segments that are resilient to certain risks. We conclude with implications for the tourism practice with recommendations on how to manage travel risk and decision-making behaviours in the (post-)COVID-19 phase.

Influence of Terrorism Risk on Foreign Tourism Decisions

Annals of Tourism Research, 1998

This study explored relationships between selected factors and several key stages of the international vacation tourism decision-making process. A theoretical framework of vacation decisions involving terrorism risk served as the foundation for the analysis. Eight independent variables were examined, including international travel experience, risk perception level, international travel attitude, age, gender, education, income and presence of children in household. Dependent variables were three key stages of the decision-making process, including the general decision to travel internationally versus domestically, the extent of information search and concern for safety in evaluating destination alternatives. A mail survey of international tourists achieved a 48% response rate. Non-response bias was tested with telephone interviews. Data were analyzed using multiple and simple regression. International attitude, risk perception level and income were found to directly influence international vacation destination choice. Touristic experience and education were indirect influences.

Crime was associated with travel centuries ago, even prior to the development of modern mass tourism. In earlier days, crimes like assault, battery, robbery, mugging, and stagecoach holdups were very common parts of the travel experience. However, with the development of tourism as a major global industry, increased concern about visitors’ safety became paramount particularly in developed nations. In Europe and North America - for instance - travel advisories are routinely issued warning citizens to avoid countries and airports where incidents of security take place. Besides, operators in hospitality and travel industries also tend to issue regular travel safety pamphlets to alert tourists to possible criminal activity in host destinations. Accordingly, when incidents of security such as crime, terrorism, wars, riots and/or civil unrest occur in a particular destination, the image of the destination is affected and tourist arrivals decline regardless whether the victims were tourists or local residents who have nothing to do with the tourism industry. The current study aimed at identifying the attributes of tourism criminal incidents in Egypt and examining the impact of such incidents on visitors' perceptions of and decisions for visiting and/or revisiting the Egyptian destination. The study included two phases of data collection, analysis and interpretation. The first phase focused on identifying the different acts of tourism crime in Egypt through the analysis and interpretation of secondary data derived from the records of the Egyptian tourism police authority over three consecutive years while the second, phase focused on exploring visitors' perceptions of and decisions for visiting and/or revisiting an affected destination through the implementation of the survey method. Finally, the study ends up with proposing some travel safety recommendations that could be helpful in alerting both visitors and operators in the hospitality and travel industry to possible criminal incidents in the Egyptian destination and the means of avoiding and/or overcoming such incidents. Key words: tourism - crime - destination - visitation – image.
