Information Seeking Behaviour of Librarians in Internet era: A study of First Grade College Libraries of Dharwad city, Karnataka

Libraries play a prominent role in satisfying the various information needs of the user community. In this changing internet era libraries need to give more importance on the collection development policies.The main purpose of any college library is to provide its users relevant and up to date information in order to fulfil its core function of facilitating teaching, learning and research. The development of ICT and its applications in the libraries have been changed the entire scenario. The study is conducted to know the information seeking behaviour of college librarians in internet era limited to colleges of Dharwad city, Karnataka.A well-structured questionnairewas distributed among the librarians for data collections. The study includes infrastructure facility of library, collection strength of library, online and offline services offered by libraries, awareness about ICT skills of librarians, basic purposes of seeking information, preferable sources used by librarians, essential library activities to promote library services, training programmes for skill enhancement for librarians, constraints faced while providing services and few suggestions for updating the knowledge/skills of librarians.The core of the library profession remains the same, but methods and tools for informationdelivery continue to grow and change dramatically. Librarians must understand information seeking behaviour of users to re-engineer their services and provide information efficiently.

Use of Electronic Resources in Selected University Libraries in Andhra Pradesh: a study

Present study covered four selected deemed university library users in Andhra Pradesh. Questionnaires were circulated 1164 library users (nearly 20 percent of the Universe), (faculty members, research scholars and post graduate students) out of whom 1030 responses were received represent representing 88 percentage. The RSVP library is not subscribing online resources because is not a technical University, so the investigator give up the responses of RSVP for using online resources. The study covered only 805 responses from three university libraries for using electronic resources. Different types of electronic resources are either subscribed or purchased by the libraries of GITAM, KL and VU as per the requirement of various colleges, institutes and departments in the university. The found that majority of users are found to be using IEEE database, EBSCO database, DELNET Database, Springer, DELNET Database in libraries. Majority of users not using properly the following databases ASCE, ASME, ASTM, Emerald Database, Oxford University Press Database, Taylor & Francis Database, JGATE database, JSTOR Database, McGraw-Hill Access Engineering Database, NPTL & SONET Videos service. User Opinion about Effectiveness of electronic resources shows majority of users considered it as somewhat effective. The study observed the coverage of use of electronic resources especially online databases subscription is low in the libraries surveyed. In order to improve their use the library should organize sensitization programmes in the form of product demonstrations, tutorials and hands-on training to train the users in exploiting online resources available to them for their academic and research pursuits.

Use of Information Sources and Services in University Libraries by Sadu Ranganadham

An effort is made in this book to present the information on the use of library resources and services by the university students, their satisfaction with regard to various sources, services, and facilities provided by university libraries namely Andhra University Library, Vishakapatnam, Sri Venkateswara University Library, Tirupati and Osmania University Library, Hyderabad.

Usage of Electronic Resources by the Users of SVIT LIBRARY-Vasad, Gujarat, India: A study

In recent years, electronic resources have become most popular sources of information for library users and library professionals. The present study was designed to find out the necessity and usage of electronic resources by the users of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Institute of Technology, Vasad, Gujarat, India. This study is based on survey method. Data collected through questionnaire, interview and observation techniques. Response of 100 students and 50 faculty members were taken for data analysis and interpretation. Results show that majority of students and all the faculty members are aware with the electronic resources. A large majority of students and all the faculty members are using Internet and E-Journals for academic purposes. Maximum number of students and faculty members admit that electronic resources can be good substitute for conventional resources. Study also reveals that students and faculty members are also faced the problem in using electronic resources like generation of redundant information and lack of subject coverage. Some recommendations also have been given to improve the use of electronic resources.

Information Seeking Behavior of Users of Patna University Library, Bihar, with Special Reference to ICT: A Survey

Introduction: The study deals with information-seeking behavior and utilisation of available information resources & services among the users of Patna University Library, Patna, Bihar, with special reference to Information Communication Technology (ICT). Purpose: We are in the age of information. The present study will answer the what, why, which, when and how questions related to information access from library users. This study will be helpful for researchers, academicians, library professionals, and policymakers to provide more ICT-based services and fulfil the information need of library users. Research Problem: This study is new and unique because very few studies have been conducted on Patna University Library. Thus, it is a small effort to fill the gap and study the information-seeking behavior of users of Patna University Library from the ICT perspective. Objectives: This study aims to know the information-seeking behavior of library users, as well as users' perception regarding the use of available library resources and services. Methodology: The study was conducted through a questionnaire-based survey method. The primary data was collected randomly through a structured questionnaire circulated among the 105 library users. The data has been analysed using simple statistical techniques based on filled questionnaires. Findings: The significant findings of the study are as most users visit the library daily; the majority of users spend three or more three hours in the library to seek information; maximum users visit the library to prepare class notes, assignments & projects; book borrow and return is the second most typical purpose among the users to visit the library; textbooks, newspapers & magazines are the most demandable reading material; most of the users prefer to seek the information in English & Hindi both languages and also prefer to use the print & electronic both formats to study; the study also reveals that majority of users are not satisfied with the existing ICT-based library services. The study reveals that there is a drastic need to implement and acquire more ICT-based information resources and services in the library.

The Utilization of Information Resources and Services Among Users of Atal Bihari Vajpayee Central Library of Mahatma Gandhi Central University (MGCU), Motihari, Bihar with Special Reference to ICT Applications: A Study

This study deals with utilizing available information resources and services among users of Atal Bihari Vajpayee Central Library of Mahatma Gandhi Central University (MGCU), Motihari, Bihar, with special reference to Information Communication Technology (ICT) applications. The study's major objectives are to know the users' frequency of library visits, the purpose of their library visit, identify users' satisfaction levels regarding library resources and services, find out the major problems encountered by the users, and know the users' suggestions etc. The study was conducted through a questionnaire-based survey method. The primary data was collected through a structured questionnaire which was circulated randomly among 120 library users. The data has been analyzed using standard statistical techniques based on filled-up questionnaires. The study reveals that the majority of users visit the library almost daily and spend at least one hour in the library. The maximum percentage of users visit the library for the purpose of issuing & returning the books. Most of the users are familiar with the information resources and services of the library. But, a lot of users are not satisfied with available information resources and ICT-based services at the library. This study is unique and new because very few studies have been conducted on this newly established Central Library of MGCU. Thus, it is an effort to fill the gap and study the utilization of information resources and services from users' perspectives. This study will be also helpful for other academic libraries to provide better ICT-based services to their users and fulfil their information resources and services need.

USE OF E-RESOURCES IN UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES OF SEVEN NORTH EASTERN STATES OF INDIA

E-Resource is a media to help the information seeker to find all e-published information. Among them some of the e-resources are freely available and some are priced. E-resource is the digital medium for communication of information. The benefits of e-resorces are --- online avialability, 24X7 easy access and simultanious use. A good number of Universities have been discharging higher education in North East Region with good library support. It is utmost important to acquinted with e-resources in addition to traditional collection for updated knowledge and information. The Universities are the centres of higher education and research. The speed and scale of electronic revolution can be expected to have impact on research collection with a force not felt since the arrival of printing press. It undoubtly bring new opportunities for information provisions to users/researchers. So the collection will change to the truely hybrid resource which technology makes possible. The use of electronic resources is growing more rapidly than expected and the use of old journals in electronic format is increasing even more rapidly than use of electronic resources overall. This article will help to get a clear picture of the use of e-resources in University Libraries of seven North Eastern states of India.

Use of E-collection by the faculty members of Mysore region engineering college libraries: a study

This paper deals with the use of e-collection in the Mysore Region Engineering College Library. This paper deals with the use of library e-collection which includes users profile; purpose of visiting; use of e-collection; use of e- database;of all the type of the use of e-collection - „E-theses and dissertation‟ has the highest mean value with 3.25 and SD being 1.24; the Chi Square values reveal that (2 =72.434, P>.000) there is a significant difference among the respondents and the biggest choice of respondents is „sometimes‟ scoring, 215(28.3%); the variable e-database„IEEE (The institute of electrical and electronics engineers)‟ has the highest mean value with 3.88 and SD being 1.28; the results of Chi Square test reveal that (2 = 366.776, P>.000) the differences among the respondents are highly significant and the biggest choice of respondents in the use of „IEEE‟ is„strongly agree‟ scoring, 319(42.0%).

Awareness and Usage of Electronic Resources among the Users of Sayaji Rao Gaekwad Library (Central Library) of Banaras Hindu University (BHU)

The paper intends to explore the awareness, usage, access patterns, and problems related to electronic resources (e-resources) among the users of Sayaji Rao Gaekwad Library. It also provides the best possible suggestions to improve the awareness and usage of these e-resources. To fulfil the objectives of the study, a survey is conducted among the users through a structured questionnaire, followed by a personal discussion with users and the librarian. The quantitative and qualitative methods were applied to analyse the collected data, and a conclusion was drawn along with a few useful recommendations and suggestions. The study reveals that the library has a good collection of print and e-resources. 80% of library users are aware of the e-resources. Nearly 80% of users are comfortable accessing e-resources. The majority 60.57% of users have no problem with access to e-resources. Most of the users access the e-resources for academic and research purposes. The study is confined to the library users of Sayaji Rao Gaekwad Library (Central Library) of Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India. The study is unique in its way. A lot of research has been done on the usage, awareness, and patterns of access to electronic resources at various libraries. But very less user studies have been done using library collection data on the e-resources of the library under study. In addition, the study will be helpful for other librarians to maximize the utilization and increase the awareness level of e-resources among the users of their library.

APPLICATION OF E-INFORMATION RESOURCES IN LIBRARIES : AN ANALYSIS OF SELECTED UNIVERSITIES OF DELHI

The fundamental point of the university library is to help the college in the areas of picking up, educating, and researching. Any academic institution's library is regarded as its most important component. University libraries all over the world have their own place of significance in the plan of higher learning. Knowledge is not only stored in libraries; it is also distributed there. There is no question that where libraries of colleges and foundations of higher learning are disregarded or not given due acknowledgment, the country all in all endures in light of the fact that the guidelines of study, educating and explore vigorously rely on the characteristics and quantitative help delivered by the college libraries. The discoveries of this paper would be valuable in outlining successful approaches, in regard of electronic data assets, in college libraries, which thus would help library clients, to involve libraries offices in a powerful and amicable way. The study could be used to build digital library infrastructure. This study's findings could also be used by Indian libraries to come up with policies and strategies for making better use of electronic information resources and services. This study was carried out with 900 respondents selected from four central universities in Delhi, and the data were analyzed using a Linkert scale and a questionnaire.
