The cultural heritage has a strategic meaning in shaping the identity of the city and community in Semarang. With the existence of cultural heritage, society is expected to be able to absorb the values and meanings implied in it. The value is the value of care for the environment and the culture around it. This paper investigates the use and application of material culture study methods to document and organise the cultural collections of the Saribas Malay community in Betong Division, Sarawak. The main objective of the study is to identify the Saribas Malays' awareness on the importance to document material culture. A documentation template based on material culture theory was designed to preserve and sustain cultural objects, starting with a practical application can be easily used and effectively implemented by the local community. This qualitative research used in-depth interviews to gather data on respondents' awareness on the importance of documenting material culture and their perception on using the template. The respondents were selected among Saribas Malays who make, use, keep and collect cultural objects. For the purpose of this study, Fleming's (1974) and Prown's (1982) models were adapted to construct a template to document information of the artefacts and as analytical tools. The findings from the interview sessions with the Saribas community showed that they were positive towards the effort to preserve material culture through documentation. The simple template proposed was sufficient to record basic information of the artefacts. Although this will take a while to complete, but in the end, this activity will be able to document the artefacts and be used as reference for academics, museum cataloguing and antique collection purposes.
Variety of Coastal Ornaments in Aceh: Aesthetic Phenomena in the Continuation of History and Culture
Budapest International Research and Critics Institute (BIRCI-Journal) : Humanities and Social Sciences
Focusing on the study of historical artifacts of art found in the Aceh Coastal region, this study seeks to analyze ornamental diversity as an aesthetic phenomenon that has a meaningful relationship with 1. Continuation of history, 2. Links in the search for cultural identity, and 3 Balancing cultural values in Acehnese society . Throughout history, the art of embroidering gold threads, woven silk fabrics, stabbing weapons, jewelry art, and wood carvings have been the hallmark of Aceh beach crafts that in their development consistently used their identity motifs. The intended identity motif is a motif that shows the cosmopolitanism of Aceh regarding pre-Islamic cultural influences and influences originating from friendly countries. The diplomatic relations which brought the influence of Persia and the Moghul dynasty from India occurred at the golden peak of Aceh's art history, especially during the times of Iskandar Muda and Iskandar Thani, although in the end, the clearest artis...
In this paper we discuss a methodology for identifying new historical information. This methodology is based on the development of a 3D animated multimedia application, simulating ancient archaeological monuments and the life of people in these monuments at the time point in history under investigation. Traditional methods of identifying new historical information include studies of books, journals and other relevant printed and digital documents as well as visits to the archaeological monuments and detailed examination of the ruins, drawings, sculptures and other ancient remains. Such studies are carried out by archaeologists, historians, architects, anthropologists, sociologists and other relevant scientists and artists [1, 2].
“KARABOURNAKI-RECORDING THE PAST”: THE DIGITIZATION OF AN ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE
2004
Karabournaki-Recording the Past" is a project regarding the digital documentation of an archaeological site using as a case study the site of Karabournaki located in the area of Thessaloniki (Greece). Focus of the project is to design, develop, and implement a multimedia cultural database system capturing the full amount of the available information regarding the site, including extended search and visualization capabilities that can deliver its multilingual content over the Internet. The meta-data that are produced with the completion of the project contribute significantly to the study and publication of any archaeological site as well as its preservation, succeeding the final goal of making it universally accessible.
Modern historic research combines urban, public, and oral history to document the lives of people. We have begun to apply to the historical record more sophisticated methods, which include regular-expression searching, text mining, document and topic clustering, automatic audio and video transcription, and other techniques based on the machine-readable nature of digital materials. Once we find documents of interest for our research, we can manipulate them. We can combine information from a set of documents with details from another set. We can extract place names from a text and map them. We can overlay historical photographs on maps of existing neighbourhoods to assess change over time. In this historical research, we suggest an educational proposal for the presentation of digitized woodcut artworks through a website, in order to familiarize with the material culture of the Greek Pomaks of Thrace in the context of teaching local history.
