Quality of the ISO 9000 series of standards-perceptions of quality management experts

Purpose The authors of this study, who adopted a holistic view of the international organization for standardization (ISO) 9000 series of standards, aimed to evaluate the current status of the standards within the framework of the quality movement. Specifically, the evaluation covered two dimensions, i.e. the significance of the content included in the standards and the quality of the standards’ elaboration, which encompasses such issues as, for instance, their correctness, relevance to current trends in quality management, comprehensibility, etc. Design/methodology/approach The paper is based on a review of the scientific literature, analysis of the current and all previous versions of the international standards and the results of a survey, through which data were collected from 73 quality management experts from 17 different countries. Quality Management System Iso 9001– Weaknesses, Practical Irregularities and Threats

The paper identifies problems related to the functioning of quality management system ISO 9001. These problems have been divided into three categories. The first one are the weaknesses of the ISO 9001 standard. The second group are practical irregularities which appear at the stages of implementation, improvement and certification of the quality management systems. The last category consists of real or potential threats in company’s surroundings. The next step of study will be an attempt to determine the potential of the new revision of the standard (which will be published in 2015) to reduce or eliminate those problems. However even at the current stage it may be claimed that changing only the content of ISO 9001 will not make a big part of the problems mitigation since it appears that only some of the irregularities are related directly to the content of ISO 9001. A comparison of ISO 9000:2000 quality system standards, QS9000, ISO/TS 16949 and Baldrige criteria

This paper examines the relationship between ISO 9000:2000 quality standards, QS9000, ISO/TS 16949 and the Baldrige criteria for performance excellence revised in the year 2002. A comparison is made between Baldrige criteria and the various elements of ISO 9000, QS9000 and ISO/TS 16949 Standards and their similarities and differences are examined. Implementing ISO 9000 requirements as an initial step for TQM implementation is also discussed.

The objective of this study provides an insight into enterprises, who need to carry on their sustainability in harmony with the changing competition conditions, technology and laws, regarding the ISO 9001: 2015. In the study, ISO 9001: 2015, which is planned to be put in force and exists as a draft, was studied and its differences from the previous standard, ISO 9001: 2008, were determined. To find out the differences, a survey was conducted among enterprises that implement a quality system. According to the findings obtained at the end of the study, it was observed that the enterprises attach importance to quality and follow the developments about quality management system, and they find the changes in the new draft document necessary.

ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.

The aim of the research reported in this paper is to assess the relative value of the 2000 version of the ISO 9000 series of quality management system standards in comparison to the 1994 version. 773 organisations in the Netherlands which have all been certified to the ISO 9000 standard were surveyed (a response rate of 21.4%) and of these only 22 had not yet converted to the 2000 version of the standard. Amongst the major findings are an overall positive perception of the value of the ISO 9000 quality system standard and a consistently higher appreciation of the 2000 version compared to the 1994 version.
