Twitter Sentiment Analysis: Application for Classifying Tweets with Video Games as Keywords
2020
The growth of microblogging services has expanded exponentially in recent years for mining user opinions. Sentiment analysis was applied to classify Twitter posts with video game titles as keywords. An analysis of the blog history, words and sentiments associated with the blog can help reveal whether the particular game is 'violent' and stress inducing or 'non-violent' and benign. An application was developed to collect and clean data. Naïve Bayes algorithm was applied to the cleaned data to determine the polarity of the words on the data to come to a conclusion whether, based on the words of the tweet, the particular game could be classified as 'violent' or 'non-violent'. The results of the algorithm are analysed for accuracy, precision and recall. Deep learning models are discussed for use in future to improve accuracy.
Pay to Play: Understanding Gamer's Motivation through Semantic Analysis
2021
Understanding what motivates a gamer to pay to play a game could enhance the gaming industry. One of the ways to understand game players experiences is through exploration via their text communication. This study explores text communication posted on the Steam digital distribution platform on paid-play games. A total of 7255 gamer text communicated were collected and analysed. Reviews from the past pinpointed that elements such as social influence, entertaining features, graphic design, music, and soundtrack used in the game could influence the game playing experience. To study those, we use mix-method (qualitative and quantitative) methods to analyse the data. We invite three human coders to categorise statements associating with its elements and aspects. Next, with the aid of Wmatrix, a semantic analysis system, we tabulate and elaborate the emotion words associating with the gameplay elements. The result shows that the positive feeling of love and joy highly encourages the gamer's overall game playing experience. Elements such as the storyline, design of the Avatar and the entertaining features are the primary motivation of the gameplay.
Topic modeling and sentiment analysis: an analysis of tweets about the game Cyberpunk 2077
2022
Consumers have become pivotal in sales and even production processes. Studies on brand-user interactions on social network and prosuming practices are significant to understand the relationship between companies and customers in digital environments. This interaction also offers many opportunities to obtain data on online user behavior and to better understand how companies improve their strategies. The analysis we propose on the Cyberpunk 2077 video game by Polish company CD Projekt Red allowed us to study what Twitter users felt and discussed about the game and how the company tried to improve critical aspects based on players' interactions. We performed a Latent Dirichlet Allocation to identify the main discussion topics on Twitter and detect the most discussed issues to highlight the solutions provided by game updates. Moreover, a Sentiment Analysis was carried out for the semantic orientation of users to understand how they expressed themselves about the game.
Moba Game Review Sentiment Analysis Using Support Vector Machine Algorithm
JIKO (Jurnal Informatika dan Komputer)
MOBA as one of the many popular subgenres today, Mobile Legend, Arena of Valor, League of Legend and Lokapala based on the large number of downloads can be mentioned as popular MOBA games, but the rating of these four applications is below 4.0 on the Google Play platform Store, this happens because some users may think that this mobile MOBA game has several advantages, but also some disadvantages that affect ratings. This study aims to determine the results of sentiment analysis on mobile MOBA games using Google Play Store reviews. Then it is processed using Python programming to create a model with the linear kernel Support Vector Machine (SVM) algorithm to classify the dataset. From the results of the classification model test using 19,579 data, where there were 10,017 positive sentiment data and 9,562 negative sentiment data and the distribution of train data and test data was 70%: 30%, obtained an accuracy of 82.64% and then re-evaluated using the Cross Validation method using 5...
Natural Language Processing for Games Studies Research
Journal of Simulation & Gaming (S&G), Special Issue on Games Research Methods, 2011

Natural Language Processing in Game Studies Research: An Overview
Simulation & Gaming, 2012
Natural language processing (NLP) is a field of computer science and linguistics devoted to creating computer systems that use human (natural) language as input and/or output. We propose that NLP can also be used for game studies research. In this article we provide an overview of NLP and describe a few research possibilities that can be explored using its tools and techniques. We discuss these techniques by performing three different types of NLP analyses of a significant corpus of online videogame reviews. First, using techniques such as word and syllable counting, we analyze the readability of professionally written game reviews finding that, across a variety of indicators, game reviews are written for a secondary education reading level. Next, we analyze hundreds of thousands of user-submitted game reviews using part-of-speech tagging, parsing and clustering to examine how gameplay is described. Our findings in this area highlight the primary aesthetic elements of gameplay according to the general public of game players. Finally, we show how sentiment analysis, or the classification of opinions and feelings based on the words used in a text and the relationship between those words, can be used to explore the circumstances in which certain negatively-charged words may be used positively, and for what reasons in the domain of videogames. We conclude with ideas for future research including how NLP can be used to complement other avenues of inquiry.

This paper discusses the analysis results of successful self-marketing techniques on Facebook pages in the cases of three YouTube gamers: PewDiePie, Markiplier, and Kwebbelkop. The research focus was to identify significant differences in terms of the gamers’ user-generated Facebook metrics and commentary sentiments. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) andk-nearest neighbor sentiment analysis were employed as core research methods. ANOVA of the classified post categories revealed that photos tended to show significantly more user-generated interactions than other post types, while, on the other hand, re-posted YouTube videos gained significantly fewer numbers in the retrieved metrics than other content types.K-nearest neighbor sentiment analysis pointed out underlying follower negativity in cases where user-generated activity was relatively low, thereby improving the understanding of the opinion of the masses previously hidden behind metrics such as the number of likes, comments, and share...

In modern times, people have started sharing their opinions, thoughts, and feelings with other people through social media. The increasing number of social media users and their shares in social media platforms has naturally drawn the attention of researchers to this field. Twitter is one of the leading data sources in this field. Since Twitter has millions of users from different cultures and classes, it is possible to collect comments in different languages and content. Tweets that people write and share in 280 characters are used for research and analysis. Because not all tweets can be read by people, in this study, sentiment analysis was performed using Naive Bayes (NB) classification algorithm and multilayer artificial neural networks (ML-ANN) based on the content of comments on mobile games. As a result of the analysis, it was found that multilayer artificial neural networks gave better results than the other methods on both training and test data.
Online discussion forums are now being used by social scientists to collect research data. One area of study that has now utilized such discussion forums is the gaming studies field. This case study outlines the advantages, disadvantages, and other implications of using the Internet to collect data via online gaming forums. Drawing from experience of other Internet methodological studies carried out online and by reviewing the methodological literature examining online data collection, the main issues concerning data collected using the Internet via online gaming forums are discussed and reviewed. Drawing on studies carried out over the last decade by the authors, this case study also outlines some of the methodological and ethical issues associated with collecting data from online gaming and gambling forums.
