Students’ Perspective on Remote On-Line Teaching and Learning at the University of Latvia in the First and Second COVID-19 Period

Sustainability

In Spring 2020, due to the rapid spread of COVID-19, all educational institutions in Latvia, including the University of Latvia (UL), transitioned from face-to-face on-site learning to remote learning. After a short period of face-to-face on-site learning in autumn, UL returned to remote learning in November for the second time. This paper investigates the UL students’ perspectives on remote teaching and learning at the UL during the first and second COVID-19 periods. The research assesses several remote study organization aspects, including the lecturer’s and student’s digital skills, their access to information and support during the study process, planning and implementation of the study process, and students’ acquisition of the content. The study used an original questionnaire designed in the Spring 2020 semester. Seven questions from the first questionnaire were included in another follow-up questionnaire distributed in the Spring 2021 semester. A total of 2248 UL students from...

Statistical Evaluation Of University Students' Attitudes And Opinions Towards Distance Education Carried Out During The COVID-19 Pandemic

EDULEARN22 – 14th International Conference on Education and New Learning Technologies, 2022

Distance education is an interdisciplinary field that aims to continue education by removing the space and time limitations between the learner, instructor, and learning resources using technological applications and devices. Most education stakeholders, particularly in higher education, have faced significant challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic, including how to continue teaching and learning, teaching core skills of the majors, and demonstrating professional and practical skills in various situations. Hence, most the students in higher education have different needs regarding distance learning. In Turkey, all courses at the beginning of the COVID-19 Pandemic and several courses during the normalization period were conducted through distance education and facilitated by the distance education centers of each university. Future technological applications should improve distance education by reducing its disadvantages. As a result, it will cease to be a supportive method and become the main educational practice. The spread of distance education comes with several advantages and disadvantages. Within this context, several studies examine various aspects of distance education and discuss how this method could be improved. This study aims to evaluate the attitudes and opinions of 1,200 students who are studying at different departments at Istanbul University in terms of their demographic characteristics. The analysis found significant differences regarding their gender, age, grade level, department of education, and time spent on the internet to improve distance learning. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there should have been a strategic shift from a traditional distance learning approach to a more advanced interactive and engaging distance learning environment. More importantly, the student's engagement in the interactive distance learning environment plays an important and crucial role from emotional, behavioral, and cognitional standpoints. Among these standpoints, emotional engagement is the most important since it creates an ecosystem in which the students feel like they belong to the community. This sense of belonging helps university students by establishing a feeling of being together while they reduce the distance between themselves and their friends. Moreover, this feeling of belonging to the community affects students' levels of engagement, which improves their academic, social, cultural, and emotional adjustment, mirrors how it was before the COVID-19 pandemic and makes them feel as though they are in the classrooms and university environment. As a result, the psychological factors have critically affected the other internal factors, such as having close friendships that change their engagements. Additionally, the sociocultural background affects this feeling of belonging while they are improving their learning. Hence, the dynamism of the distance-learning environment has had a significant impact on the higher education students' interactions with peers, teachers, and diverse learning opportunities. In some cases, the interactions among participants have improved through additional technological software, such as WhatsApp, in which each participant can find a voice.

Remote learning during the COVID-19 pandemic in the opinion of academic teachers. Survey research

Journal of Education, Health and Sport

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the academic community had to drop out of the full-time on-site education and switch to distance learning. After two years of this state of affairs and the current return to the traditional form, we would like to explore the opinions of academic teachers on this form of teaching. The study was a questionnaire-based survey, including 86 teaching staff members of the Jan Kochanowski University of Kielce, working at four faculties. The teachers assessed the level of distance learning as average, no different from the traditional approach. However, they pointed out that the involvement, activity of students, regularity of work, quality of the assignments completed, and the adequacy of the grades received is greater in the traditional approach. In the case of remote learning, in the group's assessment, the timeliness of performing the assignments had not deteriorated. Considerations for University Pedagogy: Distance Learning One Year After the Covid-19 Pandemic Outbreak

Journal of Education and Training Studies, 2022

Due to the recent outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the institutions of higher education had to transform their educational function from face-to-face to e-learning. The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of e-learning and the consequent disruption of the traditional educational function in higher education in Greece with special reference to the views of undergraduates compared to those of their peers collected via the same method and tool one year earlier in two regional Greek Universities, the University of Patras and the Democritus University of Thrace. The present research was conducted in May 2021 in order to explore students' views and feelings one year after the sudden and total transition to online teaching during the pandemic. The results suggest that students seem to prefer face-to-face courses, but they provide interesting aspects regarding e-teaching and learning-thus valuable guidelines for higher educational institutions in developing didactic approaches, to motivate students on their academic pathway, emphasizing the necessity of University Pedagogy.

Views and Evaluations of University Students about Distance Education During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Educational Process: International Journal, 2020

In recent years, technological devices and the Internet have become an integral part of our lives, changing many of our habits and daily routines. This change became more rapid and intense during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic when countries compulsorily locked down their populations in an attempt to impede or halt the spread of the novel coronavirus. In order to continue their education, students stayed at home and were required instead to study online using a computer or a mobile device such as a smartphone. According to UNESCO (n.d.), “more than 1.5 billion students are or have been affected by school and university closures during this period.” As a result, distance education has become the “new normal” of the educational system. Prior to the pandemic, many studies had been conducted regarding the opinions and attitudes of university students toward distance education; however, publications on this subject since the beginning of the pandemic are still very new. Indeed, the current study aimed to reveal the views and evaluations of university students towards distance education since the beginning of the pandemic. This qualitative study was carried out at the Turcology Department of Tuzla University in the Bosnia Herzegovina Federation. A questionnaire comprised of 12 open-ended questions was used to collect the data, which was then analyzed using the conventional content analysis approach. From the results of the study, it can be concluded that almost 90% of the participants were against distance education, but firm supporters of face-to-face education. Greek University Students’ Attitudes About Distance Education Due to Emergency Circumstances

2021

Emergencies like Covid-19 brought distance education to the fore, as countries were forced to close the campuses and initiate online teaching. Many universities in the country supported a distance education program aimed at students who had experienced an unprecedented experience. Thus, 155 students from the Greek department of Early Years Learning & Care participated in the present study, which aimed to investigate the factors that influence learners’ perceptions and attitudes during distance learning. The survey was conducted through online distribution of questionnaires and investigated hypotheses about obstacles and changes in students’ perceptions of distance learning. The results of the descriptive statistical analysis showed that the role of the educator in this process, combined with the technical support of the courses, is extremely important. Also, educators’ presence is related to students’ anxiety. Article visualizations:
