Correlation between one’s Dispositional Forgiveness and Facets of Personality

The aim of the study examine was to examine the relationship between forgiveness and the five-factor model of personality between males and females. The correlation research design was employed and the data were obtained for 60 participants i.e. 30 male and 30 female postgraduate students by using the Big five personality inventory and the Heartland forgiveness scale. The study was designed to understand: the correlation between one's dispositional forgiveness and facets of personality and to assess differences in the level of forgiveness between male and female participants. The results showed that the extraversion trait has a low-level positive correlation. It was seen that neuroticism has a negative correlation (r for males-.614 and females r is-.594) which is a strong level of correlation with forgiveness of situations for both males and females.Therefore, there's a significant relationship between neuroticism and forgiveness of situations.Hence if an individual can learn to forgive, the storm of emotions begins to calm and space is created to begin healing, allowing the knots to unfurl and release their grip on their life.

Personality Patterns and Forgiveness Among University Students in Ardabil, Iran

Background: Forgiveness is associated with many psychological and personality factors such as severe and clinical personality patterns. Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the role of severe and clinical personality patterns in prediction of forgiveness in a sample of university students. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 375 students (175 female, 200 male) from university of Mohaghegh Ardabili in 2012-2013. The subjects were asked to fill out Millon clinical multiaxial inventory-III and interpersonal forgiveness inventory. The data were analyzed by SPSS version 22 using Pearson correlation coefficient and stepwise multiple regression analysis at 95% significance level.

Relationship between Personality Factors and Level of Forgiveness among College Students

In this study, the association between big five personality factors and level of forgiveness has been measured with the help of two standardized questionnaires. These are Universiti Sains Malaysia Personality Inventory (USMaPand the Hartland Forgiveness Scale. A sample of 500 college students (200 males and 300 females; age range= 15-22 years) were selected by proportionate stratified sampling technique, from five major colleges of situated in Gujrat. The results showed significant correlation among big five personality factors and level of forgiveness. Results revealed that there was a significant and positive relationship among conscientiousness, extroversion, openness, agreeableness and level of forgiveness. It was concluded that neuroticism was significantly negatively correlated with level of forgiveness. The implication and the limitations of the study are discussed.

Forgiveness Scale Extended to the Iranian Families

The present study is conducted on standardization and normalization of the Family Forgiveness Scale (FFS) within the Iranian population. A brief description of this “scale” within the scope of family related studies is presented and other studies focused on developing similar tools for measuring the extent of forgiveness are referenced. The dimensions or subscales and psychiatric features of the forgiveness scale are described. The data pertaining to FFS scale for standardization and normalization on Iranian population are provided. It is shown here that there are no significant differences between men and women in realization and resolution of subscales. However, women are shown to be more willing to acknowledge their faults and try to compensate for their wrongdoings. Forgiveness and personality traits

Using a sample of 275 college students, this study examined the relationship between forgiveness of others (i.e., situational and dispositional) and the five-factor model of personality. All forgiveness measures were negatively correlated with Neuroticism and positively correlated with Agreeableness. Extraversion was positively related to one forgiveness measure. None of the forgiveness measures were related to Openness or Conscientiousness. However, Conscientiousness showed suppression effects and was negatively correlated with one situational and one dispositional forgiveness measure when included in multiple regression equations. Several facets of the five-factor domains were significantly correlated with forgiveness in the expected direction. The five-factor domains uniquely contributed to the prediction of forgiveness beyond demographics, empathy, religiousness, and social desirability.

Forgiveness among Javanese College Students: The Role of Cultural Values and Personality Trait

This present study is aimed to find out the correlation between Javanese cultural values orientation, personality trait, and forgiveness among Javanese college students. We propose several hypothesis: (a) there would be a positive and significant correlation between Javanese cultural values orientation and forgiveness, (b) there would be a positive and significant correlation between agreeableness, openness, conscientiousness, extraversion and forgiveness, (c) there would be a negative and significant correlation between neuroticism and forgiveness. A hundred students participated this study by filling out three questionnaires: forgiveness scale, cultural value orientation scale, and personality trait scale. Pearson correlation analysis shows that all hypothesis was accepted.

Development of the Factors Related to Forgiveness Inventory (FRFI)

This research aimed to develop a brief, multifactorial Factors Related to Forgiveness Inventory (FRFI), assessing social-cognitive factors that facilitate or inhibit forgiveness. In total, 512 participants completed a questionnaire, reporting trait forgivingness, and describing a specific transgression, characteristics of the offence or offender, beliefs about forgiving the offender, overall forgiveness and revenge, avoidance, and benevolence motivations toward the offender. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses suggested seven factors including positive post-transgression offender responses, perceived likelihood of the offender repeating offences, valuing the relationship with the offender, social influences to not forgive, believing forgiveness would be condoning or excusing the offence, intent of the offender, and spiritual beliefs about forgiveness. Decision to forgive scale and emotional forgiveness scale in a polish sample

The paper presents the concept of emotional and decisional forgiveness proposed by Worthington et al. (Journal of Behavioral Medicine, 30, 291-302, 2007) and employing the Polish versions of the Decision to Forgive Scale and Emotional Forgiveness Scale developed in line with this theory. Both scales are tools measuring episodic forgiveness is forgiveness for a specific transgression that is made once. Decisional forgiveness is a declaration to forgive, whereas emotional forgiveness is a "change of heart". The results of exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis showed that the structure of the Polish scales is exactly the same as of the original tools, i.e., in case of the DTFS, a one-factor solution (CFI = .998, GFI = .990, RMSEA = .042), and in case of the EFS, a two-factor solution (CFI = .987; GFI = .984; RMSEA = .051). The Polish versions of the DTFS and EFS were significantly correlated with other tools of forgiveness (TRIM-18episodic forgiveness and HFSdispositional forgiveness).

Evaluation of the psychometric properties of two forgiveness scales

This study examined the psychometric properties of two forgiveness scales using participants enrolled at a Midwestern Catholic university (N = 328). The Forgiveness Scale is a 15-item Likert-type scale designed to measure forgiveness toward an offender. The Forgiveness Likelihood Scale is a 10-item Likert-type scale designed to measure tendency to forgive across situations. Factor analyses revealed that the Forgiveness Scale contains two subscales (i.e., Absence of Negative, Presence of Positive) and the Forgiveness Likelihood Scale consists of a single factor. Both scales have adequate internal consistency and test-retest reliability. Both subscales of the Forgiveness Scale were significantly correlated in the expected direction with measures of forgiveness, religiousness, anger, hope, religious well-being, existential wellbeing, and social desirability. The Forgiveness Likelihood Scale was significantly correlated in the expected direction with measures of forgiveness, religiousness, trait anger, religious well-being, and social desirability.
