How Adolescent Mothers Feel About Becoming a Parent

First-time adolescent mothers deal with challenges that place extra demands not only on their stage of adolescent development but also on their ability to adapt to their new role as a parent. The purpose of this study was to explore and better understand first-time adolescent mothers' meaning and experience of parenting during the 4-to-6-week postpartum period. A secondary content analysis was performed, using narrative data collected from a previously conducted study on factors that influence adolescent mothers' self-perceptions of parenting. Three themes emerged from the content analysis: ''Being Caught Between Two Worlds,'' ''Feeling Alone and Desperate,'' and ''If I Knew Then What I Know Now.'' Findings revealed many adolescent mothers are unprepared for the demands of parenthood and, so, need extra guidance, instruction, and support from health-care providers and educators.
Adolescent mothers' experiences of the transition to motherhood: An integrative review

A woman experiences heightened vulnerability and faces tremendous challenges when transitioning to motherhood. This is exacerbated for young mothers and studies have shown that adolescent mothers experience an increased burden of responsibility during the transition to motherhood. Recent research addressing the experiences of adolescent mothers has increased. However, the current literature on this topic is still fragmented. The aim of this study was to conduct an integrative review of the literature to explore adolescent mothers' experiences of transition to motherhood and identify associated factors. The literature was searched using electronic databases: Medline, Cumulative index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), ProQuest, Scopus and PubMed. Relevant articles published in English from February 2005 to 2018 were included. Eighteen articles were included in the analysis. Based on this review, factors influencing a successful to transition to motherhood for adolescents included physical problems related to birth and breastfeeding, psychological well-being, ability to care for their baby, social support, education and economic strain and the provision of healthcare. The literature indicated a relationship between social supports and the development of positive maternal identity in the transition period for adolescent motherhood. Future healthcare interventions for adolescent mothers during the transitional period should aim to provide social support and the increase ability of adolescent mothers to manage the physical and psychological challenges of young motherhood, and enhance new mothers' knowledge about caring for babies.

The teenage motherhood discourse as a pathological phenomenon is not only promoted by the mass media; teenage motherhood, the associated factors, and its consequences have been the object of social research for four decades (Furstenberg, 1978). Traditional literature on the subject reflects the extensive interest in the social exclusion of these mothers and their dependence on services. Such traditional scientific research, usually quantitative, has always legitimised specialised interventions, and shaped public policies relating to teenage mothers. The connection to science legitimises such interventions, and can subtly take on political substrata and biological interests, influencing the way in which we experience the world (Foucault, 1980). The confluence between the slanderous discourses in the mass media, the scientific discourses, and last but not least, my experience as a specialist, who came into contact with teenage mothers' experiences, raised my interest in this subject. Experiences of the Transition to Parenthood in Teenage Married Couples

The transition to parenthood is a difficult and stressful time for many couples, and those who become parents in their teens will most likely experience stress and challenges. The objective of this review is to scrutinize evidence related to the experiences of the transition to parenthood in teenage married couples. The scoping review method used was the Arksey & O'Malley framework consisting of 5 stages including identification of the PICO framework, identification of relevant articles, searching for articles from databases such as Science Direct, Pubmed, and Willey, selecting in Prisma Flow Charts, conducting Critical Appraisal on articles, doing data charting, compiling, summarizing, and reporting the results. Based on the search results from the databases, 11 articles were obtained. Of the 11 articles, an assessment was carried out and all articles got a grade of A, 4 articles with the quantitative method and 7 articles with the qualitative method. Furthermore, 3 themes were identified, namely social support, psychological impact, and barriers. The conclusion of the study found a gap in the results of review articles in developed countries and developing countries. In developed countries, the results of review articles tend to focus on psychological problems in the transition to parenthood. The adolescent parents feel pressured and are not ready to become new parents, causing stress and depression when becoming new parents. In contrast to developing countries, psychological problems in the transition to parenthood tend to focus on social support and barriers to becoming new parents.

In this article, teenage motherhood as a process is considered. The objective of the research was to determine the paths by which teenage girls enter the mother role. Particular attention was paid to the nature of individual differences in the ways of experiencing and the realization of the successive steps of teenage motherhood: how the girls reacted to the fact of being a mother, what they experienced and how they behaved during pregnancy and performed child care. participants and procedure In the research, 166 mothers who had given birth to their children between the 15 th and 19 th year of life were included (at the moment of giving birth to the child, the age of the mother was M = 17.22). A follower interview was used. It was directed towards recreating the course of their lives from the period preceding becoming pregnant to the period of pregnancy and looking after the child, taking into consideration the complex situations connected with life and development of the female teenagers. results In the research, we applied the Reconstruction Strategy of the Process Transformation, setting the direction of qualitative analyses: (1) the level of single cases (case study), and (2) the level of the collection of cases (extracting groups of girls with common characteristics using the artificial intelligence algorithm C4.5). The analysis revealed the diversity and the internal structure of paths of the experience and realization of early motherhood: from negating oneself as a responsible mother to accepting the role of mother. conclusions The final result is constituted by the model revealing the transformation of teenage motherhood and mechanisms underlying it.

Objective: Early motherhood and its impact on mothers, children, families and communities is a prevalent health challenge in developing countries that needs to be urgently explored. The aim of this study was exploring the challenges encountered by Iranian adolescent mothers during the transition to motherhood. Materials and methods: Inductive conventional content analysis approach was used in this qualitative study. Face to face in-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with 16 Iranian teenage mothers in the Kerman province of Iran from March to December2016. Data collection continued until the point of data saturation and MAXQDA software was utilized in the analysis of the data. Being the mother of a pregnant adolescent: experiences and expectations

OBJECTIVE: To understand the typical actions of the mother during the pregnancy of her teenage daughter. METHODS: Qualitative study, based on the theoretical-methodological framework of social phenomenology of Alfred Schütz. The data were collected in 2009, and the subjects were nine mothers of adolescent primigravidae. RESULTS: The mother of the pregnant adolescent is typified as one that reacts with surprise and disappointment to being notified of the pregnancy and who, subsequently, conforms to the new reality. In reflecting on her own experience of an adolescent mother, she has expectations to support her daughter during the pregnancy and to offer support, so that the course of her life is not impaired as a result of pregnancy. Parents’ experiences of their teenage children’s parenthood: An interview study

In this study, we described and analyzed parents’ experiences of teenage parenthood and the provision of support to their teenage children who had recently have become parents. A qualitative method was used. In‐depth interviews with 24 participants were conducted, all parents of teenage parents. Data were analyzed using content analysis; four themes and 11 subthemes were identified. The results show that parents’ norms and values were strongly influenced by their religious beliefs. The participants had mixed emotions and reactions to their teenage children’s parenthood. Also participants were sources of support to the teenage parents and assisted them in their transition to parenthood. However, the participants also expressed the importance that their teenage children continue their education and avoid repeated pregnancies. Meeting the needs of pregnant and parenting teenagers using research

Pregnant and parenting teenagers have needs that are unique to the developmental stages of adolescence in addition to the needs common to all pregnant women. The study investigated the experiences, needs and coping strategies of pregnant and parenting teenagers. The study utilized a phenomenological approach, where in-depth interviews with pregnant and parenting teenagers were conducted to get an insight into their experiences, needs and coping strategies. Participants were purposively selected. A sample size was 27 participants which was determined using data saturation principle. Three themes emerged on the experiences of teenage pregnancy and parenting including, abandonment and rejection, loss of parental support and burden of being pregnant or being a parent, while three broad needs were identified; information about HIV status, physical materials for the unborn or new born baby and mother, and the desire to go back to school for those who fall pregnant while schooling. Both adaptive and maladaptive strategies were identified as a means for coping including, avoidance of negativity, support from parents, relatives and partner, repentance and dependence on God, focusing on own and the child's future, and denial of pregnancy or motherhood. It was concluded that pregnant and parenting teenagers undergo diverse negative experiences, while negotiating the transition from teenage hood to adulthood and motherhood amidst unmet teenage and pregnancy related needs. As a means to cope with the negativity and live within circumstances of unmet teenage and motherhood needs, coping strategies are required.
The Mother’s Role in Mother-Child Relationship Among Adolescents with Unwanted Pregnancies

The mother’s role is essential in an adolescent’s development due to the challenges of life and exposure to the outside world, which affect and constantly change the mother’s role. This study intends to explore the experiences of the mother’s roles in the mother-child relationship among adolescents with unwanted pregnancies. A phenomenological approach was employed to obtain the essence of the experiences. A total of 10 participants comprising of five pregnant adolescents and their mothers were interviewed to understand the role played by the adolescents’ mothers during the pregnancy. A diary was distributed among the adolescents to allow them to externalise and express the experiences that they had with their mothers while being pregnant.
