Analyzing the Effectiveness of Public Spaces on Sociability Potential of Cities: Case Study of Nobahar Street, Kermanshah, Iran

The Sustainable City XIII, 2019

The street as the pervasive and accessible urban public realm has considerable effects on the sociability potential of cities due to its multidimensional nature, embodying a range of activities from transportation, shopping, walking, and sitting to an urban space letting citizens experience and share social moments together. Hence, the street, by having a dynamic and pervasiveness characteristic, affects and promotes the sociability potential of cities and, subsequently, the quality of daily social life. This research, as a part of an ongoing PhD research at RWTH Achen University, Faculty of Architecture, aims to shed some light on the role of public space, and specifically the street, on the sociability potential of urban spaces. Hence, the purpose of this research is to evaluate the effectiveness level of Nobahar Street on social indicators of space as one of the densest streets in Kermanshah city, Iran. To achieve this purpose, a quantitative research method is assigned to realize this relation in three steps including library research to review the literature of the issue and to assign the indicators of the questionnaire as the second step of the research (data collection). The questionnaire was distributed among 120 citizens from different age groups and different genders, and, finally, in the third step of the research, the gathered data were analyzed by SPSS software. The results of the software show there is a strong relationship between Nobahar Street and its effects on social indicators assigned in the questionnaire.

Explanation of functional factors affecting the success of public spaces and providing a model for assessing success through its functional dimension (Case study: Imam Khomeini Street, Tabriz, Iran)

Iran University of Science & Technology, 2015

The conditions that different cities including Iranian cities are confronted with makes the creation of successful public spaces a necessity. It is clear that for creating suitable public spaces, first one should understand the factors influencing the space and simultaneously find solutions to spatial problems through understanding the environment. In order to arrive at the factors that influence the success of space, important theories about this subject matter were reviewed. These sources include writings by White, Montgomery, Jacobs, Gehl, Carr, Oldenburg and the experience of renowned international institutes. Finally a model for space evaluation based on place game model of PPS institute was presented. The methodology of this research is testing and verifying theory and to do this the Correlation Test was used. At first, the factors influencing the success of public spaces are categorized as “comfort”, “activity”, “access”, and “socialability”. These factors were deducted from ...

Kamusal Açık Mekânların Kalitesi ve Sosyal Etkileşim Üzerindeki Etkileri / Quality of Public Open Space and Effects on Social Interaction

Journal of History Culture and Art Research, 2018

The quality of public outdoor space has recently become an important issue and has been revealed by many studies. However, there are few studies that show the relationship between the quality of space and the social interaction that occurs between people. The most important goal of urban designers should be to create public open spaces that can meet the various needs of people. Using longer and more frequently, public open spaces allow the fulfilment of needs and also support social interaction. In this context, the concept of 'quality' of public open spaces is gaining importance. The quality of open spaces revealed by different characteristics of the environment has been determined by evaluating of the open spaces by their inclusiveness, meaningful activities, comfort, security and pleasurability and revealed the relationship between social interaction (passive-fleeting-enduring relationship). In order to determine this relationship, a questionnaire was conducted with 140 people (70 people in each park) in Atatürk Square Park and Fatih Park in Trabzon. As a result, a high level of relationship was found between the factors of inclusiveness, comfort and meaningful activities that determine the quality of space and social interaction.

Effective Indicators of Promoting Social Interactions in Urban Public Spaces with a Happy City Approachs

Shabestan research center, 2019

Today, the quality and quantity of urban spaces has become one of the most important developmental indicators in the cities. The management of citizenship relations and increase of social interactions level and presence of people in urban spaces have been considered as the backbone and capital of a dynamic and vibrant community. The purpose of this study was to determine and evaluate the effective indicators on promoting social interactions in urban spaces with a happy city approach. Sampling method was determined by multi-stage comparative stratified sampling and the number of samples was determined by using Cochran formula about 384 people in Qaemshahr. Data collection tool was a research hypothesis questionnaire. Descriptive statistics were used to describe the data. Inferential statistics were used to analyze the hypotheses by SPSS and LISREL software. Four effective factors for promoting social interactions were extracted. These factors are as follows: the first priority is the sense of belonging to the place (5.10), the second priority is security (3.95), the third priority is the urban pedestrian (3.67) and the fourth priority was urban furniture (3.60). The results show that all the components affect the promotion of social interactions in the city's public spaces.

Evaluation on Living Public Spaces and Their Qualities - Case Study from Ankara Konur, Karanfil and Yüksel Streets

IOP Conference Series: Materials Science and Engineering, 2017

Public spaces constitute one of the main elements of the living cities. They stand out as places reflecting the social structure of the society and the past values. They appear as the places one can observe the changes and modernity of the society as well as socializing places. Following to private and semi-private spaces, public spaces such as streets, squares and parks provide people a chance to be together and contact with each other. In living and vibrant places with these random appointments they feel that they belong to social urban life. Therefore, welldesigned living public spaces are important indicators of the quality of life and user satisfaction. In the scope of this paper the basic principles and design criteria that create living public spaces and their effects on user satisfaction are discussed. By analysing the spatial reflections of used design criteria it is aimed to relate the existing arrangements to user satisfaction. For these analysis, Yüksel Street located at Kızılay Square in Ankara centre and side streets of Karanfil and Konur (all car-free) were selected as case study area. This area is one of the most important and most densely used pedestrian zone of the capital with its green pattern, location and crossroads. At the beginning, basic design criteria and implementation methods are detailed with the literature survey. Then basic criteria and design principles are verified by using field studies including a survey with randomly asked 270 questionnaires. For defining the user satisfaction and bringing out the qualifications and failures in the case study area user surveys are analysed by field study observations and SPSS Statistics software. Finally, practical suggestions which are believed to be useful for this type of public places in developing and less developed countries are proposed

A Systematic Study of Public Life in Urban Space Case Study :The 17th Shahrivar Pedestrian Way in Tehran City

2019

The advent of technology has reduced the need of citizens to buy, work and do even social interactions in urban space. This condition has increased the power of individuals to choose between attend or absent from the public space and consequently has highlighted the importance of public space quality. The purpose of the public life study is to focus on the daily life of urban space to identify factors affecting public life and provide a favorable urban environment for the presence of various social strata. In this regard, the 17th Shahrivar project in Tehran was selected, which, despite the planning for pedestrians, has not been able to provide the invited and desired space for citizens. The present research, with an emphasis on the ideas of Jan Gehl, uses Gehl's study tools of public life, including counting, mapping, looking for traces, keeping a diary and test walks in the area. The findings of the research show that the study area has not had a proper public life condition except in the evenings. The main factor was lack of transparent, attractive, dynamic and diverse activities in the axis. For this reason, abandoned spaces have been created with little social monitoring which cause unwanted and unplanned functions, such as becoming a vehicle park or the emergence of social unpredictable activities that is related to the background and potential context of space. By changing the social context of users toward abnormal, alien and specific people, has reduced the quality of the environment, especially in terms of psychological security, and has decreased the presence of normal people, specifically women and children.
