The influence of nano CaCO3 on the mechanical performance of micro glass-reinforced geopolymer paste (original) (raw)
Arabian Journal of Geosciences, 2021
Abstract
This current study is part of a comprehensive study being undertaken to evaluate the effect of various types of reinforcements and nanomaterials on the performance of geopolymer pastes. In this study fly ash–based geopolymer pastes were reinforced with micro-glass fibres and the influence of three dosages (i.e. 1%, 2% and 3%) of nano CaCO3 on the corresponding mechanical properties of the pastes were evaluated. The mechanical properties evaluated are compressive strength, flexural strength, fracture toughness and hardness. Microstructural observation of the pastes incorporating the nano CaCO3 was also carried out. The findings from this study showed that the use of nano CaCO3 at a dosage of 2% is optimum in improving the mechanical properties of micro glass-reinforced geopolymer pastes. The compressive strength, flexural strength and toughness of micro glass-reinforced geopolymer pastes incorporating 2% nano CaCO3 are 46.7%, 150.8% and 52.4%, respectively. The enhancement was attributed to the refinement of the microstructure and interfacial zones alongside the acceleration of the geopolymerization reaction.
