Supply Chain Integration: Definition and Challenges

Abstract—Ever Since the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP) Defined Supply Chain Management and the Council of Logistics Management (CLM) adopted the definition of logistics in 1984, the integration of a supply chain processes or activities became obligatory definition. Many firms have extended their chain from upstream and downstream to include other vendors, agents of vendor, and customers. These firms have successfully implemented the concept of supply chain integration with spectacular results after they recognize and manage the integration challenges of supply chain. This research is a humble scientific attempt to shed more on the challenges and the obstacles that those companies faced during their success journey stand behind finding integration in their supply chain. By reviewing the available literature about the supply chain integration challenges we didn’t find a single source able to present all these challenges that may face the organization during its implementation of supply chain integration. The main contributions for this paper are integrating all the of supply chain integration challenges in one source. These contributions will be very helpful for the organizations that establish the integration in their supply chain

A framework for evaluating the status of supply chain integration

International Journal of Services and Operations Management, 2017

Supply chain management (SCM) is among the most frequently discussed topics in the corporate world today. Constant efforts are being made to develop value-added processes that deliver innovative, high-quality, low-cost products on time with greater responsiveness than ever before. Supply chain integration plays an important role to achieve the same. Unfortunately, the SCM concept has not been implemented in totality and there is a huge disconnect between supplier and customer. Many issues need to be addressed to integrate the supply chains of many industries. But the first step is the recognition of the present status of integration so that false notions are removed and fruitful work starts towards better integration and thus higher supply chain (SC) profitability. The present work tries to find out the critical parameters related to supply chain integration, which if addressed properly can provide improvements in supply chain integration effectiveness. Thereafter, the study after establishing the comprehensive list of information that flows through a generic SC and identifying their impact on the SC cost. Finally, a framework has been articulated to enable an organisation to identify its state of supply chain integration.

Review of Supply Chain Integration Between 2000 and 2019:Analysis of Current Status and Future Trends

2020

Supply Chain Integration (SCI) integrates the activities between a firm and its channel members; therefore, it is a significant interdisciplinary subject for Supply Chain Management. The main aim of this paper is to review previous research on SCI in main academic sources to give some insights and practical information in the field of SCI, while indicating an overview of the main definitions, descriptive analysis and key themes of the selected studies. This paper refers to 115 research articles in 28 journals from main academic sources between 2000 and 2019. The main result of this study shows that in the last years, research interest in SCI has increased . Although there is a huge geographic dispersion on published studies, the USA holds a leading position on SCI publications. It has been identified that scholars mainly are looking for relationship between SCI and performance issues; in addition, new themes emerge such as the implementation of Information Technology (IT)...

Virtual organization for supply chain integration: Two cases in the textile and fashion retailing industry

International Journal of Production Economics, 2010

A supply chain is an alternative form with competitive entity consisting of a group of companies in the business environment. Some supply chain projects are initiated by associated firms while some are started by the head office of multinational enterprises in order to integrate the diversified subordinates. This study focuses on the investigation on the supply chain structures within the boundaries of two multinational textile enterprises, respectively. One enterprise tries to integrate the market side by merging a brand owner. The other seeks an integration solution to compensate from its loss of control of sub-manufacturing sites which during corporate expansion were registered as independent firms. Both enterprises have initiated their global logistics management projects in order to balance the demand and supply. By participating in the two projects, our research indicates the different barriers of integrating toward the upstream and downstream supply chains and provides a mutual solution by building up the e-Fashion global supply chains. Similarities and dissimilarities of both cases towards the virtual organization approach are also addressed in this paper.

A review of supply chain integration constructs and a framework for future researchA review of supply chain integration constructs and a framework for future research

Int. J. Applied Decision Sciences, 2021

The purpose of this study is to assess the consistency of construct definition and measurement in the survey-based supply chain integration literature. A lack of consistency has been widely recognised and has contributed to a certain indiscernibility concerning the relationship between supply chain integration and performance. This study includes a comprehensive and systematic review of integration constructs and their measurement items, as well as on-site interviews with vice presidents responsible for overseeing supply chain operations in global corporations. Our analysis reveals the inconsistencies within the existing integration constructs and demonstrates how this may have contributed to a lack of consensus across the findings of existing empirical studies. To address this problem, we present the dimensions of supply chain integration and their interrelationships in a logical framework revealing the multiplicity of the integration dynamics. The framework will enable future researchers to consistently define and operationalise integration in supply chain research studies.

Supply chain integration: Direction, extent and balance

2003

Supply chain management practices and principles are evolving and changing rapidly, for example through modem information and communication technologies. These changes affect the ways supply chains are designed, the way they are managed, and how planning and control activities take place within these chains. This paper empirically analyses supply chain integration strategies in a survey sample of 128 Swedish manufacturing firms. We specifically study issues related to the relationships with supply chain partners: the direction and extent of integration, and the types of collaboration. The impact of supply chain collaboration and coordination ability on firm perfonnance and profitability is analysed. Further, the implications of our findings for futme supply chain strategies and practices are discussed.

A Conceptual Frame Work of Supply Chain Integration for Competitive Advantage

performance. In order to achieve efficient supply chain integration for the processes or activities, the organizations should recognize and understand all the integration challenges of supply chain. The aim of this paper is to investigate previous research studying the relationship between supply chain integration and performance and understand the importance of supply chain integration for competitive positioning of organization, to address the challenges encountered in integration of supply chain, and to propose a conceptual framework to reap the potential benefits of effective supply chain integration.
