Hysterics, rebels, and punks: Collectivity and feminism in Mexico City (original) (raw)

2021, Punk! Las Américas Edition

This chapter addresses music, punk, politics, feminism, and creating collectivity among women. The rhythms that move the piece are related to discoveries made in a process of group reflection and from “estar juntas” (“being together”). This work is the result of roundtable discussions in what are considered “rock” spaces in Mexico City, but, above all, it comes from a series of experiences of sharing and using these spaces by and for women. In that sense, the main objective is to analyze the way in which through punk and the being/ doing of “music,” women produce a feminist politics in Mexico City, which allows them to understand their reality, their problems, and their position as women. Additionally, it seeks to reflect on creating collectivity among women, its opportunities, its tensions, and its challenges.
