Bicilavadora The Pedal-Powered Washing Machine IDEAS 2005 Proposal
Project Summary In the developing world, washing laundry is a difficult, time-consuming task that falls solely on women. Mothers and daughters typically spend 8 hours each week scrubbing each piece of their family's clothing and wringing out the harsh washing solution by hand. Powered washing machines exist, but they are impractical in rural regions because running water and electric are expensive or unavailable. Several groups already tried to build machines for these regions but they have been unsuccessful. Their machines were either expensive to build and repair because they require imported parts or they do not wash effectively. Our invention is the Bicilavadora, a low cost, pedal-powered washing machine that is designed around readily available parts. Its innovation is its simple design and its use of inexpensive plastic barrels and bicycle components. The Bicilavadora is reliable, easy to operate and uses no electricity. The parts are available locally, so Bicilavadoras can be manufactured and repaired in the community without depending on imported goods. Our community partner is MayaPedal, a non-governmental organization in Chimaltenango, Guatemala, that currently builds and sells pedal-powered machines in their community. People in Chimaltenango have already asked MayaPedal to develop a washing machine, so the demand is clear. MayaPedal is eager to work with us to develop the Bicilavadora and their community has already proven that they will accept novel pedal-powered technology. After the Bicilavadora gains acceptance in Chimaltenango, we will share the technology with people around the world with the same need.
Fabrication and Analysis of Bicycle Washing Machine
In many developing countries it is not possible to machine wash clothes due to the absence or scarcity of electric power or the absence of machine itself. Washing clothes by hand leaves one breathless and takes an awful amount of time. A washing machine is a machine designed to wash laundry, such as clothing, towels and sheets. Generally these machines have been powered by electrical energy but pedal powered machine runs with our energy. In order to overcome the limitations of conventional washing machine pedal based washing machines are implemented. Bicycle washing machines can be very useful for rural places in developing countries where electricity is out of reach. Moreover, in developed countries too, it can be used to save electricity and getting some work out. In this project fabrication and analysis of pedal based washing machine is done, performance parameters are calculated on the basis of load and weight at different speeds and graphs are drawn.
Design of a mechanised pedal washing machine for rural hospitals
The pedal driven washing machine is designed at Kiwoko Hospital to aid rural hospitals in Uganda in washing Hospital laundry. The national electrification rate in Uganda is estimated at 14% with the rural population having even a lower rate of below 7%. Power shortage remains one of the greatest obstacles in rural areas. (Web site: International Cooperation and Development visited on 10/09/2017). This challenge makes use of an electric washing machine impossible for the rural Hospitals. Hand washing the hospital laundry continues to be a challenge as the labour requirement is very high; 20 people work for 9 hours every day, these people are exposed to risk of infection from contaminated laundry. This project is aimed at providing an alternative cloth washing method which can work in the absence of electricity and relive hospitals from the high labour cost and reduce the risk of labour infections from contaminated clothes. The methods used for the design was based on the availability of material in the local market, interviews, desk research, literature reviews, questionnaires and observations. The results obtained from the research showed that the designed machine is time saving, can reduce the infection risk and save labour costs if adopted by the rural Hospitals.

Pedal Based Hand Washing Machine with Water Level Indicator
The rate of increase in the spread of communicable diseases in our society necessitated the need for an efficient mechanism to provide proper hygiene. Hand hygiene is the most effective means of preventing the spread of these diseases. Therefore, this study presents the development of a pedal based hand washing machine for the sole purpose of hand washing. The proposed system incorporates the standard mechanical hand washing machine with digital water level indicator. The mechanical part of the system employed the use of primer pumps attached to the foot pedals to dispense water and soap through different outlets. In addition, an Arduino based water level indicator which comprises of ultrasonic sensor and liquid-crystal display (LCD) is utilized to display the amount of water present in the reservoir. The developed system is easy to operate and can function under any weather condition.
Study for The Manufacturing of Manually Operated Washing Machine
International Journal of Analytical, Experimental and Finite Element Analysis (IJAEFEA), 2020
A manually operate machine is the exchange of energy from a human source to a required mechanism. A pedal operated mechanism is most ordinarily utilized for transportation and has been used to drive bicycles for over a hundred years. A pedal mechanism is used for the manufacturing of manual washing machine where pedal power is utilized for run mechanism for washing of cloths. A machine is specifically designed for rural areas where electricity is not available with several mechanical components. A machine transmits power through a pedal mechanism that transforms mechanical energy into a work. Another person is capable of providing multiple times higher power (1/4 HP) through pedaling and continual pedaling, i.e. around ten minutes for machine washing of clothing. As a result, a pedal-operated washing machine with a chain mechanism can move to rotate a drum in order to wash clothes over a certain period of time and also reduce human stress.
Design and Development of Pedal Powered Spin Dryer Machine
International Journal for Research in Applied Science and Engineering Technology IJRASET, 2020
In this paper, we have discussed designing and development of Pedal powered spin dryer machine. It is a low-cost dryer machine which can be fabricated with mechanical segments readily available in market. The concept behind this machine is it generates enough power by human pedalling to drive the mechanism. This process follows conversion of pedalling motion to rotatory of motion the drum. As this design follows the principle of centrifugal force hence, more the centrifugal force less will be the time elapsed to dry the clothes. This mechanism does not require the usage of electricity which makes it eco-friendly. Since, in developing countries electricity is a prevailing issue which makes the usage of electric dryer machine difficult. The key idea lies in its simple unique design, fabrication with the inexpensive mechanical parts, low repairing and maintenance cost and affordability to society. The design is eco-friendly as it does not require any chemical component that can harm the environment along with that it can be used as an alternative way of cycling as an exercise. I. INTRODUCTION This paper solves a lot of problems of the today's world including the usage of the electricity supply and harmful effects on nature and at the same time it also covers one of the daily household activities. Most of the people face difficulties to dry their clothes in winter and rainy seasons where when there is a scarcity of the sunlight during these periods. The time taken to dry the clothes is much more and takes relatively very long time. Thus, there arises the need of the pedal powered spin dryer machine. A Pedal Powered Dryer Machine is a machine that helps to dry the clothes in any season despite of the conditions outside in the atmosphere. It contains a barrel in which clothes are placed and then rotated very quickly which helps in removing the water from the clothes and resulting in drying them up. To increase the efficiency and decrease the time taken to dry the clothes, we have added a fan with a heating system at the top which will send in the hot air in the barrel or drum to help the clothes dry. The Pedal Powered Spin Dryer Machine runs without the aid of electricity hence becoming a readily option in the rural areas and all those areas where electric supply is unavailable and expensive, powered electric drying machines becomes almost impractical. It requires more of a physical strength to run the machine which can also be result in kind of exercise to keep people fit and healthy. People ride their bicycle outside as an activity to keep themselves fit but now with the help of this machine they can work out at home meanwhile drying their household clothes too. It also helps us in saving the environment as it saves electricity. Thus, the electricity saved can be used for other purposes. As we all know that the time taken to dry the clothes in winter and rainy season is a long-time process and depends totally on the sunlight provided which is scarce in those seasons. Sometimes it takes days to dry only a handful of clothes because of the no sunlight available. II. LITERATURE REVIEW In the early 20 th century first electric dryer was invented by J. Ross Moore who built a shed in his house for his clothes while they dried. In addition, a stove was added on the shed. The clothing would hang in front of the fire throughout the day in a series of a line. This idea was embedded as the beginning of the development of electric dryers. Moore worked to build a gas and electric unit but could not find anyone to help him get his idea manufactured. The drum-type model was built by Hamilton Manufacturing in Wisconsin. Dharwa Chaitanya et. al. designed and developed a machine which does not require electricity for several operations like washing. This is a human powered machine which runs on gear and uses human efforts to drive. It can be used as by both human power as well as electric power. The design was ideal for use in the developing world because it does not require electricity and can be easily built using metal base, chain, bearing, foot pedal (operated by human), chain sprocket [1]. Linxu, Weinan bai et.al. designed and developed a pedal driven washing machine, the main objective of this study is to provide a product with an alternative way to wash clothes in case of no electricity. So, machine which is a pedal driven machine, it satisfies the need of rural people by giving them an alternative way of washing clothes which is quick, cost-effective, and eco-friendly [2].
