Vanga to Bangladesh : Recasting Construct of a Nation-State (original) (raw)
2022, Bangabandhu and Bangladesh: History, Politics, Economy
This research explores the historical journey towards a nation-state undertaken by the people of the territory located in the easternmost part of India. This journey started in Vanga in antiquity and ended in independent Bangladesh in 1971. Popular narratives of the emergence of Bangladesh fail to take this long journey and adopt a broader perspective on the formation of the nation-state that would emerge as Bangladesh into consideration. The journey to Bangladesh, indeed, passed through different historical junctures, overcoming the vicissitudes and challenges on the way. Although dynasties and empire played their parts in the making of politics, polity, and the nation-state, ordinary people played the most significant role in its formation, growth, and development over the ages. However, through the establishment of the nation-state, a group of people lost part of their historical, cultural, and political experiences that they had shared with the rest of the people of the geographical region of Bengal for thousands of years. The research sheds light on this phenomenon as well.
