Household Socioeconomic Status and Sexual Behaviour Among Nigerian Female Youth

2004

This paper examines the determinants of sexual behaviour with special reference to the effect of household socio-economic status as a proxy for poverty. The data are derived from the Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey; the analysis is restricted to 1831 never married females age 15-24. Both descriptive and analytical methods are used to assess the effects of each poverty-related factor when the effects of other demographic and socio-cultural factors are controlled statistically. The results show that 31.5% of the respondents have had sexual intercourse and more than half of these had an affair in the month preceding the survey. The median age of sexual debut is 17 years and there is little variation among socio-demographic and poverty-related indices indicating a generally early initiation of sexual activity. Condom use is low among the youth; only 15% have ever used condom and about 22% of the sexually experienced used condom the last time they had an affair. The results indicat...

Do Family Structure and Poverty Affect Sexual Risk Behaviors...

This study examined sexual practices in a Nigerian University community with a view to understanding the role of family structure and poverty on risky sexual behaviours. A representative sample of 1,301 undergraduate students was randomly selected from the various faculties that made up the University. Using a questionnaire instrument, information was obtained on sexual behaviours of interest such as sexual initiation, multi-partnered sexual activity and condom use. Findings showed a noticeable variation in the relationship between family structure and risky sexual behaviour. Contrary to expectations, students from single parent homes showed lower likelihood of having multiple sexual partners. Also poverty was found not to be a critical determinant of risky sexual behaviour. Given the unclear nature of the findings, future study should explore further understanding of the relationship between family characteristics, poverty rating and risky sexual behaviour among students. Relationship Between Poverty and Risky Sexual Behaviours Among Adolescents in Rivers State, Nigeria: A Questionnaire-Based Survey

Pan Africa science journal, 2024

Background: Adolescents are sexually active and tend to initiate sexual activity at an early age; this has remained a public health concern due to the associated reproductive health risks. This study was designed to evaluate the relationships between poverty and risky sexual behaviour among senior secondary school students in Rivers State, Nigeria. Materials and Methods: A questionnaire-based survey was conducted among 823 students from selected senior secondary schools in Rivers State, Nigeria. The hardcopy questionnaire was distributed to the respondents using the one-to-one method with the aid of research assistants. The respondent's consent was duly sought and obtained. The respondent's private information was treated with confidentiality. Obtained data were exported into Excel version 2007, and the analysis was done with the computer software package SPSS version 21.0. Descriptive statistics showing the frequencies and percentages were used to explain the data as appropriate, and inferential statistics (Binary Logistic regression) was used to determine the association between poverty and risky sexual behaviour of adolescents. A p-value less than 0.05 was set as a level of statistical significance. The result of the study indicated that the majority, 698 (86.6%) of the respondents who reported high poverty, engaged in risky sexual behaviour compared to 5(2.69%) of those who said low poverty. The complete model as a whole, showing the chi-square analysis result, revealed a significant association between poverty and sexual behaviour (χ2 (1, N=823) =3465, P< 0.001). The result of the study further demonstrated that those who

Impact of Family Dysfunction on Indiscriminate Sexual Behaviour of Adolescent Students of Unity Schools in South - South Zone Nigeria

2015

The study investigated the Impact of family Dysfunction on Indiscriminate Sexual Behavior of Adolescent Students of Unity Schools in South-South Zone Nigeria. Two research questions and two hypotheses guided the sturdy. Ex-post facto and correlational designs were employed for the sturdy. A sample of 640 SS 2 and SS 3 students was drawn from the population using stratified random sampling technique. The instruments used for data collection were Dysfunctional Family Assessment scale (DFAS) and Indiscriminate Sexual Behavior Scale (ISBS). The results were estimated through Linear Multiple Regression, Analysis of Variances (ANOVA), T- test associated with the regression and Mean and Standard deviation. The finding revealed significant influence of family dysfunction on adolescent’s indiscriminate sexual behavior based on the findings; it was recommended that sex education should form part of the curriculum for health education in both basic and secondary school.

Socio-Demographic, Economic and Psychological Correlates of Risky Sexual Behaviour Among Sexually Active Young People in Nigeria

Global Journal of Health Science

This study sought to identify the socio-demographic, economic, and psychological factors associated with risky sexual behaviour among sexually active youths in Nigeria with the view to providing more empirical information for the development of more effective interventions to improve safe-sex practices and the sexual health of the young people in Nigeria. The study analyzed the male and female datasets extracted from the 6th round of the Nigeria Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey data (MICS) (n=7,909) using descriptive statistics and multiple binary logistic regression to achieve the study objectives and test hypothesis. The results showed that 66% of the youths have had sex before reaching 18 years, 77% had unprotected sex, and 32% have had more than one-lifetime sexual partner. The significance of the association between socio-demographic (age, sex, marital status, ever fathered/mothered, awareness of AIDS, ethnicity, residence, and region), economic factors (employment status and ...

Sexual Behaviours And Practises of Unmarried Young People in A Nigerian State University

Background: Sexual behaviours and practises of the youth are important in an era of HIV/AIDS especially since a third of Nigerian population are young. Parent-child sexuality communication has been identified as a protective factor for adolescent sexual and reproductive health, including HIV infection. Objectives: To assess sexual behaviours and practises of unmarried young undergraduates and factors which may influence them. Methods: A questionnaire based cross-sectional study of 246 youths aged 15-24 years was done. SPSS version 20.0 was used for data analysis. Chi 2 and t-test were used to test for significance. p<0.05 was accepted as significant. Results: Mean age of participants was 21.9+2.02years, 53.4% were males and 49.5% were of upper socioeconomic class. Sexual intercourse had occurred in 208(74.4%) of which 193(92.8%) were currently sexually active. The mean age at sexual debut was 15.98+3.95years, while 16.67+4.03years and 15.41+3.81years were for females and males respectively(t=39.85, p<0.001). Contraceptive-use occurred in 135(64.9%) majority attributing non-use to misconceptions, non-availability and non-accessibility of contraceptive devices. The nature of first sexual intercourse was consensual for 146(52.0%) while the rest were either forced or coerced into intercourse, majority without contraceptives. Majority of participants had no formal discussions about sex and sexuality with parents/school teachers. Those of the upper socioeconomic class were more likely to use contraceptives and to communicate freely with parents on sex. Conclusion: While majority of young people in our locale are currently sexually active, unsafe sexual practices are the norm. Parent-child sex and sexuality education is thereby recommended.

Is Poverty a Driver for Risky Sexual Behaviour? Evidence from National Surveys of Adolescents in Four African Countries

African Journal of Reproductive Health, 2007

This paper contributes to conflicting evidence on the link between poverty and risky sexual behaviour by examining the effect of wealth status on age at first sex, condom use, and multiple partners using nationally representative adolescents' data from Burkina Faso, Ghana, Malawi, and Uganda. The results show that the wealthiest girls in Burkina Faso, Ghana, and Malawi had later sexual debut compared with their poorer counterparts but this association was not significant for Uganda. Wealth status was weaker among males and significant only in Malawi, where those in the middle quintile had earlier sexual debut. Wealthier adolescents were most likely to use condoms at the last sexual act, but wealth status was not associated with number of sexual partners. Although the link between wealth status and sexual behaviour is not consistent, there is evidence that poor females are vulnerable to infection because of earlier sexual debut and non-use of condoms.
