Mesolithische und neolithische Widerhakenspitzen aus dem circumalpinen Raum. Ein forschungsgeschichtlicher Rückblick (original) (raw)

Abstract

This contribution examines in historical perspective the current state of research and key areas of debate concerning the interpretation of barbed points used to make harpoon heads during the Transalpine Mesolithic and Neolithic. Particular attention is given to debates concerning the bearing these artifacts have on broader questions about cultural processes and linguistic differentiation. In this connection, I will examine to what extent barbed points can be seen as a central, indeed diagnostic component of Mesolithic material culture. I will suggest that the much debated barbed point is likely to have been an important special-purpose tool, but that the current state of research does not support the view that it can be employed as a diagnostic cultural feature for distinguishing typologies of Late Mesolithic and Neolithic material culture.
