Effect of online social networking on student academic performance

Online social networks (OSNs) have permeated all generations of Internet users, becoming a prominent communications tool, particularly in the student community. Thus, academic institutions and faculty are increasingly using social networking sites, such as Facebook and LinkedIn, to connect with current and potential students and to deliver instructional content. This has led to a rise in questions about the impact of OSN on academic performance and the possibility of using it as an effective teaching tool. To learn more about the impact on academic performance, we conducted a survey of business students at a large state university. Survey results were analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM). The results revealed a statistically significant negative relationship between time spent by students on OSN and their academic performance. The time spent on OSN was found to be heavily influenced by the attention span of the students. Specifically, we determined that the higher the attention span, the lower is the time spent on OSN. Further, attention span was found to be highly correlated with characteristics that predict or influence student behavior, such as their perceptions about society's view of social networking, their likes and dislikes of OSN, ease of use of OSN, etc.

The increment uses of social networking sites (SNS) such as Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp have changed the way people communicates with each other especially among students in university. Thus, the academic institutions eagerly encourage the use of social media as the platform for learning. This study aims to investigate the relationships between the SNS factors (time spent on SNS, time management, predictor behavior, academic competence, and attention span) towards academic performance. Then, this study also aimed to identify the differences in social networking sites (SNS) factors between gender. A set of valid questionnaires is distributed to students at university in Klang Valley. The data were analyzed by using Partial Least Square Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) and the independent t-test approach. Results revealed that the time spent on SNS has significant positive direct effect on academic performance (p-value=0.043) and predictor behavior (p-value=0.05) has significant negative direct effect on academic performance. On the other hand, the findings also showed that both attention span, (p-value=0.036) and time management, (p-value=0.037) have negative indirect effect on the academic performance given that time spent on SNS was added as mediating variable. As for the independent t-test approach, the findings reveal that there are significant difference in factors of SNS between male and female students. The significant factors are predictor behavior, time spent on SNS and time management.
Advancement in technology and the increased availability of internet enabled handheld devices have significantly increased students’ access and use of the internet. The use of social media is enhanced by the availability and access to internet. In Nigeria and the world today, social media has gained acceptability and has become a tool for communication and social cohesion amongst students. The use of this assortment of social media has diverse effects on the user’s life, some of which are negative and others, positive. This study is aimed at investigating the impact of Social Network Usage on University Students Academic Performance using Benue State University Makurdi, Nigeria as a case study. The study sampled 1596 students. The study focused on three key impact areas: the time spent on social media, the frequency of visiting social media and the relationship between the volume of social friends and a student’s academic performance. Correlation and regression analyses were used to determine and measure the extent to which the three variables were related to students’ CGPA. The study adopted a paper-based close-ended questionnaire and was restricted to undergraduate students in three majors. The study found that the time spent on social media, the frequency of visit and the total number of online friends has a statistically significant relationship with a student’s academic performance. It is therefore recommended that access to social media should be restricted and controlled, and the idle time should rather be channelled into studying. Purpose of the study: This study analysed the relationship between Online Social Networking websites and Applications (OSNSA) and university students' academic achievement. Methodology: In the present research, a quantitative research design was followed, and a survey research type of descriptive research was used in this study. Data were collected from 150 university students using a modified version of The Online Social Networking Sites scale (Paul, Baker, & Cochran, 2012). The correlation was calculated by using the SPSS 22nd version. Main Findings: The findings revealed a connection between students' time spent on OSNSA and their academic outcomes. The time spent on OSNSA was observed to be strongly influenced by the attention span of the students. The Impact of Social Media Networks Websites Usage on Students' Academic Performance
Social Networks Sites (SNSs) are dominating all internet users' generations, especially the stu-dents' communities. Consequently, academic institutions are increasingly using SNSs which leads to emerge a crucial question regarding the impact of SNSs on students' academic performance. This research investigates how and to what degree the use of SNSs affects the students' academic performance. The current research's data was conducted by using drop and collect surveys on a large population from the University of Jordan. 366 undergraduate students answered the survey from different faculties at the university. In order to study the impact of SNSs on student's academic performance, the research hypotheses was tested by using descriptive analysis, T-test and ANOVA. Research results showed that there was a significant impact of SNS on the student's academic performance. Also, there was a significant impact of SNS use per week on the student's academic performance, whereas no differences found in the impact of use of SNSs on academic performance due to age, academic achievement, and use per day to most used sites. The findings of this research can be used to suggest future strategies in enhancing student's awareness in efficient time management and better multitasking that can lead to improving study activities and academic achievements.
The aim of this research study is to examine the possible impact of social networking sites on academic performance of university students. The rationale behind the study is to find out whether the daily exposure of the students to social networking sites has effect on their academic performance. The researcher tries to find out the answers of research questions. 1. Most used social networking sites by students and purpose of using social networking sites, 2. How much time students spend on their study? 3. How much time students spend on social networking sites? The research study also tests a hypothesis that social networking sites usage has significant impact on academic performance of students. Methodology: Researcher uses a quantitative study design to conduct the research. A sample comprises of hundred students has been selected by means of convenience sampling from a private sector university of Karachi to study the phenomenon. Data has been collected through a detailed structured questionnaire and analyze by using Statistical Packages for Social Sciences (SPSS V 17.0). Findings: Findings also show that exposure to social media has effect on the students as they found to be more engaged in social networking instead of spending time on studies. Conclusion: This paper recommends that student should pay more attention to studies, limit their use of social networking and use it more for educational purpose.

The study examined students' perception of influence of social networking on academic performance in Kwara State College of Education, Ilorin. Descriptive research design was used to conduct the study while data were collected through questionnaire. The study involved a total of 145 participants who were randomly selected. Descriptive statistics was used to analyze data collected. Findings revealed that most of the students have access to social networking sites and that majority prefer WhatsApp and Facebook. Similarly, students spend more time on social networking at the expense of individual learning. Consequently, social networking negatively influenced students' academic performance. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended that different education software should be made available and accessible to students and the use of social networking in teaching and learning should be encouraged.

The main intention of this paper is to provide the readers a more comprehensive understanding of the effects of the use of the different social networking sites to the academic performance of the 4th year section Excellence of Baliuag University. This also aims to promote awareness on the role of advanced technology on the lives of students. An in-depth analysis on both positive and negative effects is made. The researchers are apt to determine the relationship between and among variables under investigation. They came up with two hypotheses :1) A person who spends longer hours in using SNS than studying is more likely to have poor academic performance, lower grades and difficult understanding of the lessons ; and 2) A person who spends longer hours in studying than using SNS is more likely to have good academic performance, higher grades and better understanding of the lessons. Guided by the purpose of this study, questionnaires were distributed to 4th year students, section Excellence. The Convenience Sampling was used. Most of the respondents are 15 to 16 years old. They are all users of SNS. The Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram are the three top SNS that most of the respondents use most of them claim that they spend 1-2 hours in using SNS while they spend 3 to 4 hours in studying. Most of them maintain their academic performance even after becoming active users of SNS. These students use SNS as additional references in their studies. On the other hand, the problems that other encountered on the use of SNS are time management and study habits related.
Use of Social Networking among Secondary School Students: Implications for Academic Performance
The study focused on the use of social networking among secondary school students in Lagos State, Nigeria with implication for academic performance. Specifically, the study determined the relationship between social networking usage and various factors affecting secondary school students who are users of SNSs. The study was strictly restricted to randomly-selected students in public and private secondary schools in Lagos State, Nigeria.
