PORNOGRAPHY AND ITS EFFECTS ON CHILDREN FROM ISLAMIC AND SCIENTIFIC PERSPECTIVES

Journal of Integrated Sciences, 2023

The issue of pornography is no longer foreign and has become a polemic in the global community. In Malaysia, people irrespective of gender, age, race and religion are affected by pornography addiction. Various factors have been identified as the causes of pornography addiction such as internet abuse, influences from movies and games, self-esteem, sex drive and peer influence. This addiction has various serious effects and harmful consequences on the development of individuals, affecting their spiritual, physical, psychosocial, mental, emotional and reproductive development. More alarmingly, this addiction can lead to serious and severe sexual crimes such as unsafe sex practices, rape, free sex and molestation. Various parties in the country have begun to recognise this fact and are conducting numerous awareness campaigns, drafting legislation, enforcing strict laws and organising prevention programmes. However, the human development approach to address this problem has not been specifically discussed. This paper therefore aims to explore and help readers understand how the human development approach, based on Islam and science, can help many parties to tackle the problem of pornography addiction. This study discusses scientific sources according to the Al-Quran

The Effectiveness of Contemporary Islamic Scholars in Tackling Pornography Addiction: A Case of Muslim Students in Britain

AJHAL, 2020

In the contemporary era, fatwas mostly contain derivative information from classical texts such as the Quran and Hadith. Fatwas are used to tackle pornography addiction while it may lack productivity in spreading innovative solutions among Muslim students. Failure to provide solid Islamic pornography rehabilitations and disfavouring to speak openly on pornography does not stop the prevalence of pornography among Muslim students. Therefore, the purpose is to explore the prevalence of pornography, its effect on Muslim students, and strategies to overcome pornography addiction. Through SPSS analysis, the numerical data shows that both Muslim male and female students view pornography regardless of its prohibitions. Some Muslim students are engaged in maladaptive behavior, affecting their spirituality, religion, and overall well-being (Ademola, 2017). The study, therefore, suggests alternative awareness programs to support Muslim students to overcome the struggles of pornographic addiction that is often too tempting to resist. Dealing with pornography per today's context perhaps will diminish the statistical rate of Muslim students watching pornography.

The main findings of the literature demonstrated that watching porn was most frequently done out of boredom, for sexual gratification, and to pick up new fashion and behavior ideas from these movies. In all facets of the users' lives, negative consequences were seen. Due to the explosion of new technologies, online pornography has risen to an alarming level, which has very injurious effects on societies and individuals. Therefore, it is high time to get rid of this addiction to protect our lives from its harmful effects.

The questions included sociodemographic characteristics, online-based pornography consumption habits and sociobehavioral characteristics. Chi-square test and binary logistic regression analysis were performed to examine correlations between online pornography addiction and sociobehavioral factors such as socializing habits, nature of interactions, university attendance and study focus, sleeping habits, and consumption of main meals. Results: The use of pornography was significantly higher among students who gathered late nights with their friends (58.4%, P < 0.001). Furthermore, those who frequently argue/fight with their friends (51.0%, P = 0.001) frequently fooled around with their friends (48.4%, P < 0.001) and those who did not go to bed on time (57.7%, P < 0.001) reported greater consumption of pornography. Students who fooled around with their friends and those did not go to bed on time were more than twice as likely to watch pornography than students who did not fool around, and those went to bed on time. Students who did not go to bed emerged to consume online pornography. Such behaviors can have negative impacts on studies education outcomes as well as wider social and moral impacts for students and the society as a whole. In this digital era, technology has invaded every aspect of our lives, with increasing access to the internet.
