Review of Studies on Oral Case Presentations in Clinical Settings
Recent years have evidently shown that genre studies are growing considerably in language studies, mainly in the study of academic and professional genre. A number of academic genres have been focusing on the analysis of structural elements in research articles and theses’ introduction. However, very few studies have attempted to examine the structural elements in professional genres, especially in medical academic setting. Due to the importance of this professional genre, particularly towards novices in order to improve their communication skills in presenting medical cases to their instructors or superiors, this paper reviews past studies related to genre analysis of oral case presentations in their academic and professional settings. By doing so, it reaches the conclusion that there are generic elements in oral case presentations that can guide medical novices to improve their way of presenting case presentations in medical academic settings.
Principal component analysis and medical English discourse: An investigation into genre analysis

This paper examines the variations of 17 grammatical variables (verb tenses, voice and form) within the communicative function of 51 medical English papers (case reports, editorials and research papers) and provides a framework of grammaticorhetorical relationships that characterize the style of a given sub-genre. The frequency of occurrence of the variables is recorded and a principal component analysis carried out. The table of quantitative data is thus represented by a set of diagrams (in a three-dimensional space) which highlight the similarities and differences in grammatical forms among the observed objects. The first axis opposes the present and future tenses (associated with attitudinally marked papers, i.e. editorials) to the simple past and passive voice (associated with truly scientific papers, i.e. research papers and case reports). The second axis mainly marks a ddcalage in the use of modals in the the three sub-genres whereas the third one highlights the different communicative use of the gerund in the three text types. Finally, some pedagogical guidelines for the preparation and use of reading materials are provided.
An Analysis of Interferences on English for Medical Purpose Speaking Activity

One of impacts that can be observed on language difference during learning English is interference. Indonesian medical students have problem with speaking; what they said does not reflects what was in their mind. This descriptive analysis study identified the interference on medical students while doing speaking activity in the class. Four students were chosen randomly as the subjects to give their diagnosis verbally. Their speaking was recorded, transcribed and coded. The analysis was done on basis of four types of interference by categorizing language transfer into four types: phonological, grammatical, lexical and orthographical. Result showed that among four language transfers or interferences, phonological and grammatical interferences were prominent. As addition generalization and fossilization can be observed. Students did less English pronunciation practice in the class meanwhile Indonesian language has very different way on pronouncing a word. Some medical terms such as LDL and hypertension were uttered in Indonesian language within giving diagnosis in English. Teachers at Medical Class should introduce medical terms in English together with the pronunciation. The pronunciation recital should be scheduled before speaking activity.
An Overview of Medical Discourse Studies: Cultural Variation across Genres and Registers
Discourse is a language context that exists in a dialogue or communication interaction. Discourse is also part of pragmatic analysis. Discourse takes a role in medical side broadly. It exits in medical context about curing, healing, therapy, curative practices, speaking and writing that can help medical institution, social action, and etc. this paper reviews a description about cultural variation in medical discourse and variation between register and genres. This study examines two approaches to analyzing Medical Discourse namely Conversation Analysis (CA) Foucaults' theory.
Speech Act Representation of Doctor – Patient Interactions in Grey’s Anatomy Serial

The transition from face-to-face learning to distance learning is an example of COVID-19 pandemic effect. This condition is a challenge especially for vocational-based nursing education providers because during the COVID-19 pandemic the experience of students interacting with patients tends to be restricted. To identify the context of the interaction between medical personnel and patients, this study aims to identify the linguistic representation used by doctors when interacting with patients based on the type of speech used in the conversations. This study used a descriptive research design with a qualitative approach. The data source used was the doctor's speech in Grey's Anatomy. The analysis followed a theory of the types of speech action initiated by Searle. The results of this study indicate that the speech acts used by doctors can be categorized into representative (48.57%), directive (37.14%), commissive (8.57%), and expressive (5.71%). The results of this study are expected to enrich the teaching materials of English for Specific Purposes subject for Nursing students.

Comprehending the striking role of Conversation Analysis (CA) research in a real context on the one hand, and a substantial part doctors play in doctor-patient conversation in the proceeding stages of receiving medical intensive care as an inherent nature of society on the other hand, provoked the researchers to conduct this research. To achieve this intention, the present study focuses on conversation aspects of doctor-patient talks in unconfirmed cases of COVID-19 in Golpayegan, Esfahan, Iran. This study tries to find out what conversation aspects are more frequently used by Iranian interlocutors in the context of the doctors' office. Three doctor-patient meetings, for this purpose, were audio-recorded, then transcribed. The focus is on both the talk and nonverbal aspects of conversation to be analyzed. The Clinical Case Presentation as a Narrative: Form and Practice

This paper examines an underrepresented genre of spoken clinical discourse-the clinical case presentation. Since little generic research into this peer-to-peer speech event has been conducted and also due to the fact that case presentations are often neglected by English for Medical Purposes (EMP) teachers, particularly those without backgrounds or experience in medicine, the author will explain both how and why case presentations are constructed and performed, particularly by clinicians who practice in non-English clinical milieus. This study is based upon a number of observations carried out at 10 clinical university hospitals in non-English normative parts of Asia, involving observations of a total of 36 distinct clinical case presentations performed in 10 different clinical departments. These observations were further supplemented by structured interviews with senior clinicians, instructors, training program designers, and presenters. One of the prominent features noted of expert presenters is that their presentations tend to extend well beyond the mere conveyance of clinical data and serve to express a narrative-the story of the patient's case-which produces a more holistic impact upon the audience. Features of narrative that are incorporated into this speech event will be discussed, followed by a discussion as to how the teaching and learning of case presentations might best be carried out in EMP classes.

Glocalized rhetoric practices on medical writing

Facing a rapidly changing global environment, educators around the world have argued for a need to incorporate a global perspective in local educational policy making. The present study undertakes such a glocal project examining medical writing of international physicians and Taiwanese interns. In this study, the Corpus of English for Medical Purpose (CEMP) has been created. There are 50 experts' (49,655 words) and 50 students' (9,829 words) medical writing samples respectively. The moves and steps used between the two groups were analyzed from three linguistic features, voice form, tense, and grammatical subject. Then, a parallel corpus was consulted in an attempt to explain the rhetoric features unique to Taiwanese writers. Based on the findings, a framework is proposed to provide guidance for the instruction and learning of medical writing. The findings contribute to medical education by highlighting how the dual forces of the target and native languages shape students' medical writing.
