Contraception in adolescence: knowledge, chosen methods and criteria adopted
Background: Contraceptive methods (CM) are important resources in the prevention of adolescent pregnancy. This study aimed to investigate adolescent knowledge, attitudes and practices related to contraception. Study Design: A cross-sectional and exploratory study was conducted with 7th to 9th grade adolescents in northeastern Brazil. Their knowledge, attitudes, and contraceptive method use were analysed by gender, age and sexual initiation groups. Results: A sexual debut had been experienced by 21% (n = 120) of all respondents (n = 570). The majority of the respondents who had experienced a sexual debut were male (73.3%, n = 88), their mean age was 15 years (SD = 1.46), and 49.3% (n = 59) never used any CM. The participants displayed low knowledge and unfavourable and ambivalent attitudes concerning contraception. Conclusion: Adolescents initiate sexual intercourse with knowledge and attitudes that limit the use of CM, which makes them more at risk of pregnancy. Further research that will be representative of the specific population in need of interventions is necessary.
Cross-sectional study, with non-probability sampling, including 189 students in 7 th and 8 th grades of a public school of Uberaba/MG, Brazil, which aims to identify sexual practice patterns and use of contraceptive methods (MAC) in adolescents. There were 52.9% men, with an average age of 14.6±1.3 years old and 50.3% had between 1 and 3 minimum wages. 72% of men and 60.7% of women have already had sexual relations and 89% of them had active sex life. 38.9% use MAC in all relationships, being the most used method the male condom. Friends are the primary source of information and the man is appointed as the responsible for the use of MAC. These results reflect the need of health education activities targeted at adolescents, more inclusive and ludic methodologies, stimulating the critical reflection about vulnerability factors related to this risk sexual behavior they are exposed. Ciencia e Innovación en Salud
Background: The objective of this study was to asses frequency of employ, as well, as the level of knowledge of post-coital contraception in young female university students, living at the municipality of Tunja, Colombia. Methods: Descriptive, observational cross-sectional study. A sample of 615 students from two universities, public one and private the other, answered a survey about knowledge, sexual practices and the use of contraceptive methods, including the emergency contraceptive pill. Results: Mean age 21.18 years; Mean age of onset of sexuality 16.5 years; 59.7% had a stable partner; 69.6% answered that they had taken emergency contraception pill at least once in their life and 36.4% reported a frequency equal or greater than twice a year, while 17.5% considered it as a contraceptive method of habitual employment. Conclusions: Although the use of mechanical barrier methods as a method of contraception is not the objective of this study, we found that the condom is still the ...

This study aimed to assess the prevalence of contraceptive use by adolescents. A cross-sectional study was performed from March to September 2002 in a representative sample of adolescents 15 to 18 years of age in the urban area of Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil. Multiple-stage sampling was used, and in the 448 census tracts located in the urban area, 90 were sampled and households were visited in each tract. Information was collected on sexual initiation and use of contraceptive methods. Chi-square test was used to compare proportions. The sample included 960 adolescents. 88% of subjects reported the use of any contraceptive method. Condoms were the most commonly used method (63.2%). Low adolescent schooling was the only variable associated with increased risk of non-use of contraceptives. Condom use was higher among males, adolescents whose mothers had 9 or more years of schooling, and those reporting several sexual partners in the previous year. Condoms were the most commonly used contraceptive method.
ERICA: sexual initiation and contraception in Brazilian adolescents
Revista de Saúde Pública, 2016
OBJECTIVE To estimate the prevalence of sexual initiation and contraceptive use at the last sexual intercourse of Brazilian adolescents, according to sociodemographic features. METHODS The data were obtained from the Study of Cardiovascular Risks in Adolescents (ERICA), a national school-based cross-sectional study. We included 74,589 adolescents from 32 geographic strata (27 capitals and five sets of municipalities with more than 100,000 inhabitants of each of the five macro-regions of the Country). Information on sexual initiation and contraceptive use at the last sexual intercourse (male condom and oral contraceptive pill) has been used. We have estimated prevalence and confidence intervals (95%CI) considering sample weights according to sex, age, type of school, residence status, macro-region and capitals. RESULTS We observed that 28.1% (95%CI 27.0-29.2) of the adolescents had already initiated sexual life, with higher prevalence among those aged 17 years (56.4%, 95%CI 53.9-58.9...
Does the knowledge of emergency contraception affect its use among high school adolescents?
Cadernos de saúde pública, 2016
This study aimed to test how knowledge on emergency contraception (according to age at sexual initiation, type of school, and knowing someone that has already used emergency contraception) influences the method's use. This was a cross-sectional study in a probabilistic sample of students 15-19 years of age enrolled in public and private middle schools in a medium-sized city in Southeast Brazil (n = 307). Data were collected in 2011 using a self-administered questionnaire. A structural equations model was used for the data analysis. Considering age at sexual initiation and type of school, knowledge of emergency contraception was not associated with its use, but knowing someone that had used the method showed a significant mean effect on use of emergency contraception. Peer group conversations on emergency contraception appear to have greater influence on use of the method than knowledge itself, economic status, or sexual experience.
