The Role of Religion and Faith Actors in Violence Against Women and Girls in Africa (original) (raw)
2020, The Palgrave Handbook of African Women's Studies
This chapter examines the complex and varied roles of religion and faith actors and their responses or lack of it thereof to violence against women and girls (VAWG) in Africa. In particular, it focuses on the many ways in which faith actors and communities of faith engage, perpetuate, and tolerate VAWG in their sermons, teachings, and practices. The chapter argues that while religion and faith actors are well positioned to fight violence against women and girls, they also present significant challenges and tensions inherent in their patriarchal and masculine spiritual space.
