Appraisal Analysis in Media Conference between the Government of Indonesia and Australia towards Bilateral Relations Normalization

This descriptive study aims to identify and analyze the types of appraisal found in the media conference between the Indonesian government and the Australian government in 2013. Appraisal is the evaluation of available types of attitudes delivered within a discourse. There are three types of attitudes in appraisal: affect, judgment, and appreciation. Affect is a means of how individuals express their feelings in discourse. Judgment is divided into personal judgment and moral judgment. Personal judgment includes individual's admiration or criticism, while moral judgment includes individual's praise or condemnation. Appreciation concerns individual's attitudes towards surrounding things. The result shows that there is no negative appraisal proposed by the representatives of both governments. Linguistics Politeness Markers in Australian Embassy in Indonesia’s Social Media

This article analyzes the types of politeness markers on the social media of Australian Embassy in Indonesia. This research used descriptive qualitative method with content analysis techniques. Data sources taken from Instagram and Facebook which retrieval during 2017. The data was selected based on educational and cultural themed. This reaserch found that there were 55 politeness markers included in 15 forms, there are semoga, kamu bisa, apakah, selamat, bentuk sapaan hormat, ayo atau yuk, bentuk sapaan akrab, sangat dianjurkan, asyik ya, tak sabar, tahukah kamu, sebaiknya, bagaimana, sukses untuk studinya, kami mendoakan yang terbaik, and kami ingin mengucapkan selamat. Positive Politeness Strategies In Prabowo’s Winning Declarations As An Indonesian President Candidate

This research is intended to find the positive politeness strategies used by Prabowo in his winning declaration and to reveal the reasons why certain strategies are dominant. This research belongs to descriptive qualitative.The research subject is positive politeness strategies and the research object is Prabowo speech as an Indonesian president candidate 2019-2014. This research used Brown and Levinson’s theory of politeness strategies. The research data are in the forms of utterances. The research data were collected through recording and taking note technique. The research data were taken from youtube. The Use of Politeness Strategies in the Indonesia’s 2019 Presidential Campaign Teams on Online News Media

The politeness strategy can be found in daily conversations and in debating events. One of the debates of concern for this study is the debate between two presidential election campaign teams in Indonesia. This article sought to describe the strategies used by both groups on online news media and to find out whether there is any significant difference between in the use of positive and negative politeness strategies. This research used descriptive qualitative methods to analyze sixteen articles of media coverage of news with high political salience from two important national online news media having opposite ideology, MediaIndonesia.com and Kompas.com. Discussion primarily draws upon Brown and Levinson's politeness theory. The result of the research shows that each groups of election campaign team used various politeness strategies projected by three context-driven politeness strategies. This implies that each teams should consider politeness attracts positive attention, gives tough situations a chance to turn around.

KARDI NURHADI ABSTRACT In the academics perpective, newspaper is seen not only as the source of information, but also it can be used as the source of knowledge. It is an effective media to present the new studies in a scientific field and giving the positive contribution for the progress of the discipline. In language learning newspaper can be used as a media to improve our language ability. In terms of pragmatics, it is possible to find out pragmatics problems especially politeness. This paper focus on the analysis of pragmatics namely positive and negative politeness. The data is taken from the news article, there were five item of article selected. The analysis is done by seeing the expression and statement used by participant in news article. It is based the quotation and statement of the participant. Then, the pragmatics analysis show that, there were some of politeness problem found in the news article. There were five of politeness fact for each the article. The politeness problem including the positive politeness (compliment) and negative politeness. It is possible to involve face threatening act between the participant. The positive and negative politeness have it own purposes. Brown and Levinson (1987) described that, writing politeness is interpreted as a strategy (or series of strategies) employed by a speaker to achieve a variety of goals,such as promoting or maintaining harmoniuos relations. As a matter of fact, the pragmatics politeness is not only found in spoken text but also it can be found in written text. The Politeness Strategy and Its Scale of Ahok’s Statements as a Governor of Jakarta

The research discloses to the politeness scales and strategies of Ahok’s statements as a Governor of Jakarta. To identify both, the data will be analyzed and presented qualitatively by using five (5) strategies by Brown and Levinson, and five (5) measuring scales rating of politeness theorized by Leech. The data that have been presented show that the strategies used by the speaker are mostly negative politeness strategies. The speaker emphasizes the advantages on the Speaker image only without paying attention to the Interlocutors. In the context of existing multi-lingual it shows that the form of the statements is mostly classified into declarative and assertive dominating the statements. On a scale of decency, it demonstrates that the authority scale often becomes the one mostly performed in the statements centering on less positive face. While the people’s opinions on the strategy used by speaker are various. Several of them ignore the strategy and concern to the work result; and many others really concern to strategy used and it is a crucial thing to adapt to the social-cultural context. The negative politeness strategy is mostly used because the speaker emphasizes the advantages on the speaker image only without paying attention to the communicant. Therefore, the impact is polarity in both societies and something which breaks in the cultural politeness strategy commonly used among the persons who are in the duty for the nation. Both work result and social rules are important to be done.

Politeness Principles and Strategies in Language Used By President Joko Widodo to Indonesian Citizens, Through Vlog #JOKOWIMENJAWAB

President Joko Widodo opens communication with Indonesian citizens through vlogs. Through the vlog, every citizen of Indonesia can convey various problems directly to President Joko Widodo and answers directly, as well. This paper aims to describe the politeness principles and strategies in the language used by President Joko Widodo when answering various questions from citizens of Indonesia who ask through a vlog entitled #JOKOWIMENJAWAB. The theoretical basis used is the principle of politeness from Brown and Levinson. The data source in this paper is vlog #JOKOWIMENJAWAB, while the data in this paper is the speech act of President Joko Widodo when answering questions via vlog. The data in this paper was collected by using listening and noting methods, whereas the data analysis used a pragmatics approach. The results of the data analysis obtained that President Joko Widodo in his speaking used a strategy that reflects the character of a head of state, namely, maintaining politeness in order to avoid misunderstandings and conflicts that arise. President Joko Widodo's utterances used numerous politeness strategies that contain strong illocution and per locution force for the hearer (the citizens).

This article discusses the maxims of politeness principles and the pragmatic scales. It is found in the interview between Putra Nababan and Barack Obama on March 22nd, 2010. The purpose of this study is to determine how far the maxims of politeness principles and the pragmatic scales affect Nababan and Obama utterances. The data are taken from the utterances of both participants. It is collected by understanding and taking a note the utterances in the interview. This study analyzes the context of situation in the interview. It also analyzes the maxims and pragmatics scales to know the purpose of using politeness principles. This analysis uses Leech's politeness principle maxims (1983) and Searle's speech acts (1969) theories. Mixed methods (quantitative and qualitative methods) are also used in this analysis. Politeness found to be most dominantly in e-mail appears of business correspondence used to exchange specific information in certain circumstances in discuss by the customers from other countries and difference socio-culture. Business corresponden is an example where the customer within dominantly use politeness to interact in order to negotiate and specific purpose. The purposes of researcher are : (1) to find out kinds of politeness used in e-mail of business correspondence from the customers of PT. Bukit Angkasa Makmur, (2) to explain of typical politeness used in e-mail of business correspondence from the customers by the different countries. The researcher used descriptive qualitative method approach. The data were taken from e-mail of business correspondence by the customers of PT. Bukit Angkasa Makmur by collecting data, reading data, comparing data, encoding data, and analyzing data. The results had analyzed as follows: 8 of kinds positive politeness, and 22 kinds of negative politeness. In e-mail, found in business correspondence 10 kinds of negative politeness from europe, 12 kinds of negative politeness and 6 positive politeness of asia, as well as two kinds positive politeness of africa. In connection with this kinds of negative politeness that most appears of asia and are often used statements based on typical of kinds in negative politeness of business correspondence in e-mail originating from various countries in accordance with the specific situation of each typical of the customers. Because, typical politeness in asia have the values and norms are highly in society based on the individual situation, identity, gentle and politeness in an appropriate intention nor the individual habits of others.
