Effective Planning of Public Transportation Systems: A Decision Support Application
2018
Decision making on the true planning of the public transportation systems to serve potential users is a must for metropolitan areas. To take attraction of travelers to projected modes of transport, adequately fair overall travel times should be provided. In this fashion, other benefits such as lower traffic congestion, road safety and lower noise and atmospheric pollution may be earned. The congestion which comes with increasing demand of public transportation is becoming a part of our lives and making residents' life difficult. Hence, regulations should be done to reduce this congestion. To provide a constructive and balanced regulation in public transportation systems, right stations should be located in right places. In this study, it is aimed to design and implement a Decision Support System (DSS) Application to determine the optimal bus stop places for public transport in Istanbul which is one of the biggest and oldest cities in the world. Required information is gathered f...
A Flexible System for Optimizing Public Transportation
2010
In this paper we introduce an information system for optimizing public transportation. We integrated state-of-the-art results o f the literature and new methods developed by our team. The main results of the research presented in this paper are not just the successful applications of these methods, but a new approach for system design in decision support of public transportation optimization processes.
Decision-Making Intelligent System for Passenger of Urban Transports
Ubiquitous Computing and Ambient Intelligence, 2017
Smart transportation systems have now been implemented in many cities. The implementation of these systems requires having a solid infrastructure and specialized devices. However, the implementation of these systems does not consider the infrastructure of other countries. As result, its implementation can be costly. Specifically, in Mexico, Urban Passenger Transport has few transportation units to meet the demand of the population. Also, these do not provide precise information of arrival times of buses. In this research work, we present a software system that combats the inconveniences of public transportation in Mexico, providing information in real time that will allow the passengers to make informed or correct decisions regarding their journey. The information provided to the passengers will be the availability of seats and the arrival times of the buses.
Real-time mass passenger transport network optimization problems
2006
The aim of Real-Time Mass Transport Vehicle Routing Problem (MTVRP) is to find a solution to route n vehicles in real time to pick up and deliver m passengers. This problem is described in the context of flexible large-scale mass transportation options that use new technologies for communication among passengers and vehicles. The solution of such a problem is relevant to future transportation options involving large scale real-time routing of shared-ride fleet transit vehicles. However, the global optimization of a complex system involving routing and scheduling multiple vehicles and passengers as well as design issues has not been strictly studied in the past. This research proposes a methodology to solve it by using a three level hierarchical optimization approach. Within the optimization process, a Mass Transport Network Design Problem (MTNDP) is solved. This paper introduces MTVRP and presents a scheme to solve it. Then, the associated algorithm to perform the MTNDP optimization is described in detail. An instance for the city of Barcelona, Spain is solved, showing promising results with regard to the applicability of the methodology for large scale transit problems.
“A Decision Support System For Intermodal Transportation Networks Management”
This paper specifies a Decision Support System (DSS) devoted to manage Intermodal Transportation Networks (ITN). With the aim to support decision makers in the management of the complex processes in the ITN, we describe the architecture of a DSS and its main components. In order to obtain a generic DSS, we employ the Unified Modeling Language (UML) to describe the components and the architecture of the DSS and we apply the solutions based on Service Oriented Architecture, the simulation drivers and window services.
Effect of real-time transit information on dynamic path choice of passengers
2011
Real-time information is increasingly being implemented in transit networks worldwide. The evaluation of the effect of real-time information requires dynamic modeling of transit operations and of passenger path choices. This paper presents a dynamic transit analysis and evaluation tool that represents time-tables, operation strategies, real-time information, adaptive passenger choices, and traffic dynamics at the network level. Transit path choices are modeled as a sequence of boarding, walking and alighting decisions that passengers undertake when carrying out their journey. The model is applied to the Metro network of Stockholm, Sweden area under various operating conditions and information provision scenarios, as a proof of concept. An analysis of the results indicates substantial path choice shifts and potential time savings associated with more comprehensive real-time information provision and transfer coordination improvements.
Simulation of Optimal Routes Passenger Transport
2019
The purpose of the study is to create an economic and mathematical model for improving the performance of urban passenger transport and to make effective management decisions for planning and redevelopment of city routes. The research takes into account the current plans for the development of the city of Ternopil and the trends of urban passenger transportation.
DY-RT: A TOOL FOR SCHEDULE-BASED PLANNING OF REGIONAL TRANSIT NETWORKS
This paper describes a decision support system (DSS) for the design and evaluation of service integrated systems (bus-bus and/or railway-bus) at regional scale. The modelling system has been built through a "what if' approach by using a system of schedule-based supply, demand and demand-supply interaction models; these models have been implemented in a software tool called DY -RT (DYnamic Regional Transit). The use of a within-day dynamic schedule-based approach allows us to evaluate on-board flows and level of service attributes (especially interchange times) for each run of each line, in order to assess in a more detailed way the effect of service integration and timetable synchronisation for regional transit networks, as described in the application examples reported in the final part of the paper.
