Role of Demand Side Management Techniques in Reducing Electricity Demand of Residential Users
European Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science
Demand of electrical energy is growing day by day worldwide. To meet this increasing demand, generation is needed to be increased subsequently. Increasing generation is not an easy task as it may require setting up new generating units, changing transmission lines, control equipments, etc. Moreover, increased generation also causes increased environment pollution. An alternate approach that can create balance between demand and supply of electricity without increasing generation is demand side management (DSM). Furthermore, demand side management has the potential to reduce the use of energy resources resulting in less environment pollution. In this paper, three DSM techniques: using solar system, load limiting, deliberate load reduction are applied for residential users of Dhaka, Bangladesh and the results are compared with two traditional techniques: energy efficiency, direct load control. It has been found that by using solar system at home significant amount of electrical energy...

In recent year the concept of prosumers (energy producer as well as the consumer) is becoming more popular, and on the other side, demand response has gained attention especially in the smart and micro grid systems. In such power networks, the behaviors of prosumers are highly variable due to many factors and few are price depended, incentive depended etc., Due to the highly dynamic nature of the prosumers, the peak load management is becoming crucial in the power system operation and control especially in smart grids, in which demand side management (DSM) application thought to be useful. This paper presents a simulation study on the role of DSM in the peak load management for a residential community. Here, load shitting-based DSM technique is used. This study considered the daily consumption patterns (hour wise) of electricity using the four types of electric loads. Results showed a considerable decrease in the peak load when compared to the load patterns before applying DSM. The average demand per day in summer is 4.521 kW, and in winter is 3.871 kW. The summary of peak load demands per day in kW without DSM are 14.712 kW, and 18.18 kW for summer and winter respectively. With the load shifting based DSM technique, the peak load per day are reduced to 9.6 kW in the summer season and 9.672 kW in the winter season.
Improving Energy Consumption using Demand Side Management System
International Journal of Science and Advanced Technology, 2014
Demand Side Management (DSM) commonly refers to programs implemented by utility companies to control energy consumption at customer side of the meter. A comparative analysis of power consumption is been carried out using the power network of Abuja campus in the University of Port Harcourt, River State as a case study. The prospect of Demand Side Management is not fully implemented in this region as there are no Smart Meters (SM) and Smart Distribution Boards (SDB) with which the utility company can regulate the load consumption at various consumer units within the campus. It is observed that the bulk of consumption for office complexes at any point in time when there is adequate power supply without the use of smart grid comes from the air conditioners followed by the sockets, fans, security light and light fittings in descending order. This concept will ensure constant power is provided to consumers, it would also ensure that quick response to faults is achieved by reducing the time it takes to find and resolve faults on the network. In addition to these, it can also reduce power theft situation currently being encountered in the country.

The inclusion of photovoltaics (PV) in electric power supply systems continues to be a significant factor in global interest. However, solar power exhibits intermittent uncertainty and is further unpredictable. Accurate solar generation prediction and efficient utilization are mandatory for power distribution management and demand-side management. Peak demand management and reducing energy costs can be effectively tackled through the implementation of a reliable solar power forecasting system and its efficient utilization. In this regard, the proposed work is related to efficiently managing solar PV power and optimizing power distribution using an enhanced reinforced binary particle swarm optimization (RBPSO) technique. This DSM (demand-side management) strategy involves utilizing a forecast of solar PV generation for the upcoming day and adjusting the consumption schedule of the load to decrease the highest energy demand. The proposed approach improves user comfort by adjusting the...

Demand Side Management (DSM) is a very important tool that converts a consumer's passive role to an active one by changing energy consumption and helps the energy utilities to decrease the peak demand and reshape the load curve. This paper presents a detailed analysis of the impacts of three of the most important DSM techniques which are energy efficiency, direct load control, and shifting load through two cases for one day in summer and one day in winter. The effectiveness of the three techniques is demonstrated on an average daily consumption of an Egyptian residential house in Shebin El-Kom, Menoufia Governorate. The desired objectives are reducing the energy consumption, electricity bill, and minimizing peak to average ratio (PAR). The obtained results confirm that applying DSM techniques has significant potential in terms of financial savings for the consumers and utility provider, and a cleaner environment without any impact on service quality or customer satisfaction.
A Literature Review on Demand Side and Energy Efficient Management
Energy crisis is one of the major issue and hindrance of progress in our country. Increased use of load which depend on the quality and continuity of the electrical supply, challenge the reliability of a distribution system due to the fluctuating demand. Emerging new technologies demand-side load management will change the way we consume and produce energy. By effectively applying future energy production, consumption, and storage techniques, a more energy-efficient electricity supply chain can be achieved. This review paper proposes an idea of how an electricity utility may employ for selective pricing for peak and off-peak time periods to influence demand for the purpose of load levelling. And also the methodologies involved both in demand side responses as well as the suitable energy management techniques.

Energy consumption schedule (ECS) technique shifts usage of loads from on peak hours and redistributes them throughout the day according to residents' operating time preferences. This technique is used as form of indirect control from utility to improve the load curve and hence its load factor and reduce customer's total electric bill as well. Similarly, load shifting technique achieves ECS purposes but as direct control form applied from utility. In this paper, ECS is simulated twice as optimal constrained mathematical formula, solved by using CVX program in MATLAB® R2013b. First, it is utilized for single residential building with ten apartments to determine max allowable energy consumption per hour for each residential apartment. Then, it is used for single apartment with number of shiftable domestic devices, where operating schedule is deduced using previous simulation output results as constraints. The paper ends by giving differences between ECS ...
Optimization-based Energy Management System to Minimize Electricity Bill for Residential Customer
2021 3rd International Conference on Electrical & Electronic Engineering (ICEEE), 2021
In order to meet the increasing growth of energy demand, incorporation of renewable resources appears to be a viable solution. With the increase of renewable integration, a big challenge is to handle these intermittent resources in a smart way. An effective approach can be the optimal management of energy of Solar PV panels and energy storage besides the main utility. In this research, an optimization method is employed to manage variable load demand to minimize the overall electricity bill of residential house over a period of 24 hours. Optimization approach schedules the energy resources and decides, when to use grid or cut it off, depending on the availability of solar power, state-of-charge (SOC) of ESS and dynamic electricity tariffs. The impact of using smart energy management system (EMS), is tested by executing three different plausible cases. To verify and validate the real time behaviors of the model, optimization results are compared with the static electricity tariffs and a substantial cost reduction is observed.
Optimized Residential Loads Scheduling Based On Dynamic Pricing Of Electricity : A Simulation Study
This paper presents a simulation study which addresses Demand Side Management (DSM) via scheduling and optimization of a set of residential smart appliances under day-ahead variable pricing with the aim of minimizing the customer's energy bill. The appliances' operation and the overall model are subject to the manufacturer and user specific constraints formulated as a constrained linear programming problem. The overall model is simulated using MATLAB and SIMULINK / SimPowerSystems basic blocks. The results comparing Real Time Pricing (RTP) and the Fixed Time Tariff (FTT) demonstrate that optimal scheduling of the residential smart appliances can potentially result in energy cost savings. The extension of the model to incorporate renewable energy resources and storage system is also discussed.
