Management and Marketing Journal, 2015
Innovation represents a widely debated topic in the context of current economy, being an opportunity to achieve corporate competitiveness within an environment of uncertainty. The main purpose of this paper is to analyze the impact of different innovation types on the innovative performance in the case of 31 European countries, using the simple and the multiple linear regressions across countries. In this regard we have considered different types of innovation, such as product, process, marketing and organizational innovation, while the innovative performance was synthetically expressed by Summary Innovation Index 2013.The main result of our study is that in order to achieve high innovative performance it is necessarily to implement product and process innovation simultaneously with organizational and marketing innovation. Thus, the findings of this paper can represent a guidance for companies to identify the most appropriate types of innovation that have the greatest influence on a...
Aspects of Innovation Within Romanian Enterprises, Compared to Other European Countries
Annals of Spiru Haret University Economic Series, 2013
The article approaches a key topic of the European economy, namely the issue of innovative enterprises, aiming to provide a more objective picture of the place occupied by our country in the European context in terms of innovative performance, the prevalence of innovation in Romanian companies, the typology of these innovations and these companies compared to other EU states. Emphasis will be placed on the characteristics of innovation in Romanian enterprises, on the differences in the degree of innovation among the developing regions of our country, but also on the difficulties local enterprises face in trying to innovate. Our paper will rely on a secondary analysis of data from multiple databases, reports, studies developed by European and Romanian institutions.
Revisiting the Factors Driving Firms' Innovation Performances: the Case of Visegrad Countries
Journal of the Knowledge Economy, 2020
This study examines the various factors that drive firms' innovations in Visegrad countries. For the empirical analysis, we used data from the Eurostat Community Innovation Survey 2012-2014 and the probit regression model. The probit regression analysis finds that the main drivers of innovations in these countries are competing in foreign markets, engaging in innovation activities such as R&D and in-house training activities. We find that engaging in R&D was probable to improve product innovations by 48%, process and organizational innovations by 27% and market innovations by 22%. The study also finds that public subsidies for innovations from local, central and EU sources significantly influenced firm-level innovations. Lastly, innovations in these countries were also significantly and positively stimulated by certain firm characteristics such as size and ownerships. In this respect, policy makers and industry management should consider increasing their investments for research and development and its related activities inter alia to improve innovation performance.
Organizational Innovation and Firm Performance: A Study of Albanian Firms
2019
Organizational innovation theories mostly utilize a dichotomous division between types of innovation and stages of innovation. For instance, the dual core theory dissects innovation in administrative and technical dimensions, hereby emphasizing the dissimilarities between technical and social systems of an organization (Daft 1978; Damanpour & Evan 1984). Moreover, the theory of innovation radicalness uses a different phrasing of organizational innovativeness, whereas the ambidextrous theory of innovation examines how an organization adopts certain innovations by identifying two separate stages. This paper’s purpose is to investigate how organizational innovation affects two other aspects of innovation – technical and administrative innovation – which comprise the general innovation construct. The study was conducted employing a sample of 100 Albanian firms, where the organizational innovation model has been enquired to test the effect it exercises on general organizational innovativ...
Key factors, influencing company's innovation performance
The objective of the research was to study innovation patterns within service and manufacturing companies. The study was performed on 173 Slovenian service and manufacturing companies. The statistical analysis was accomplished in 2 phases. The first phase encompassed principal component analysis. In the 2nd phase, a series of statistical tests were applied to compare the actual encouragement of the innovation factors within both sectors. Interestingly, only few significant differences among the factors’ mean values in service and manufacturing sector were identified as to the statistical tests. Also, it was indicated that the advantage of the manufacturing sector in results achieved may be rather of degree than of a kind. Unexploited potential was indicated in particularly in terms of systemic conditions and making use of innovation triggers. Consequently, in comparison with EU’s most innovative countries (e.g. Germany), both sectors demonstrated a significant lag in the number of i...
A sample of 18 papers and 32 data sets revealed 210,404 firm level observations about European firms making decisions about innovation. A total of 66,965 observations describe activities of innovators between 1986 and 2008. This paper used a basic literature review to assess properties of innovation among quite rare full CDM (Crépon, Duguet, and Mairesse) papers. This study compared results from two systems of estimation and showed that both international and regional comparisons are rather problematic because of different definitions of innovation variables and data set representativeness. On average, a typical firm that engaged in innovation was a large firm competing in international markets in the sample of firms with 20+ employees. Smaller firms, however, invested more in research and development (R&D) and no linear relationship was found for output characteristics. Cooperation on R&D projects increased overall innovation intensity. There is strong evidence that public funding had an ambiguous effect on R&D spending and no additional effect on innovation output on average. This output measured by sales from innovated goods and services was on average in a positive relationship with labour productivity; however, a detailed view suggested this effect was present only in product innovation. In this paper, it is shown that results of innovation studies cannot be compared or used in research without deeper analysis of the data sample (micro companies, industries, active firms, entrants etc.), dependent variable (innovator, R&D expenditures, sales, productivity, new product, new service etc.) and the baseline company that is defined by independent variables.
Innovation Performance of Czech and Finnish Manufacturing Enterprises and Their Position in the Eu
ACC Journal
The aim of this article is to assess the innovation performance of innovative small, medium-sized, and large enterprises operating in the manufacturing industry in two European countries – the Czech Republic (CR) and Finland, and to determine their position within the EU based on a comparison with average values of created Fictitious EU Country (FEUC). The FEUC includes the indicators and population of the EU member countries whose data were available. The performed analysis is based on the use of selected key performance indicators (related mainly to inputs that are expected to contribute to innovations) evaluating the enterprises´ innovation performance. The conducted research tries to identify the most significant drivers of innovation performance with regard to the size group of enterprises. Moreover, the achieved results are further compared within the innovation environment of the CR and Finland as well as the EU as a whole. It is worth highlighting the innovation resources of...
Business Innovation Activity in Romania: The Main Trends and Weaknesses
Procedia - Social and Behavioral Sciences, 2018
Innovation is vital for each country's economic growth. This paper comprises an analysis of the main indicators that characterize innovation activity in Romanian firms. Improving our knowledge of firms’ activities in aspects associated with their behavior related to innovation is important for monitoring the strengths and weaknesses of the national innovation systems. Our study on Romanian firms is based entirely on the published data by Eurostat (the Commission Innovation Survey - CIS), which centralizes data every two years, the last have been published at the end of 2016 (CIS 9) covering the period 2012-2014. From building and analyzing three main types of general innovation indicators related to firms’ innovativeness, including innovation inputs and outputs, our results show that the main weaknesses in business innovation persist over time and they consist of the extremely low share of innovative firms, a low level of business innovation expenditures and a high volatility of...
